Abstract
Purpose
This study aimed to examine beliefs in repressed memory and dissociative amnesia from a cross-cultural perspective.
Design/methodology/approach
Chinese (n = 123) and Belgian student participants (n = 270) received several statements tapping into various dimensions of repressed memory and dissociative amnesia. Participants provided belief ratings for each of these statements. Because the field of psychoanalysis is less well developed in China, it was expected that Chinese participants would believe less in repressed memory and dissociative amnesia than their Belgian counterparts.
Findings
Overall, beliefs in repressed memory and dissociative amnesia were high among all participants. Although confirmatory analyses revealed that most belief ratings concerning statements did not statistically significantly differ between the two samples, Chinese participants did statistically believe less that therapy can recover lost traumatic memories than Belgian participants. Also, exploratory analyses showed that Chinese participants were more critical towards the idea that traumatic memories can be unconsciously repressed and that these memories can be accurately retrieved in therapy than Belgian participants. Many participants also confused repressed memory with plausible memory mechanisms such as ordinary forgetting.
Originality/value
The current study extends previous surveys on repressed memory and dissociative amnesia by comparing their beliefs in different cultures.

Abstract
Purpose
Studies have indicated that international innovation collaboration has promoted technology transfer and knowledge spillover between countries. The conclusion of various international intellectual property (IP) treaties has played an essential role in optimizing the international innovation and collaboration environment. This study investigates the effect of IP treaties on international innovation collaboration and whether international IP treaties can promote collaboration between a country and other economies in the world.
Design/methodology/approach
After collecting and extracting the patent record data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), a final dataset of 3,213,626 cooperative patents and 465,236 pairs of collaborations between two countries or regions is established. Based on the international patent collaboration data of 192 countries during 1976–2017, the changes in patent collaboration indicators after these countries joined 23 IP treaties are analyzed.
Findings
International IP treaties have significantly increased the number of patent cooperation countries of a country and its importance in international cooperation networks. The role of IP treaties is more manifested by the increased opportunities for a country's international innovation cooperation than its influence on global innovation; this is of extreme significance for developing countries to introduce advanced technologies.
Originality/value
Ginarte and Park (1997) have confirmed that IP treaties have helped to raise the level of IP protection. In this study, the increase in the degree centrality of the international innovation network is evidence of IP treaties to promote innovation cooperation. For a developing country, joining an intellectual property treaty may strengthen intellectual property protection and optimize its own international innovation cooperation methods.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to numerically and experimentally evaluate the effect of the protection net icing on the inlet performance of helicopter engines.
Design/methodology/approach
The ice shapes of the protection net at different times are first simulated by a two-dimensional (2D) icing calculation, then the porous media parameters are calculated based on the 2D ice shapes. Afterward, three-dimensional flow fields of the engine inlet with the iced net are simulated using the porous media model instead of the real protection net. The transient pressure losses of the iced protection net are calculated and tested through an icing wind tunnel test rig under different icing conditions.
Findings
Overall, the numerical results and experimental data show a good agreement. The effects of several control parameters, such as liquid water contents (LWC), water droplet diameters and airflow velocities on the pressure loss of the protection net during the icing process are analyzed in a systematic manner. The results indicate that the pressure loss increases with the increase of the LWC at the same icing time. The same trend occurs when the water droplet diameter and the airflow velocity increase.
Originality/value
A new method to predict the pressure loss of the iced protection net is proposed. A series of tests in an icing wind tunnel are performed to obtain the ice shapes and pressure loss of protection net during the icing process.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to find out the influence degree of harmonic current on the generator operating parameters. In practical operation of the salient-pole synchronous generator, the heat generated by eddy current loss may lead to the breaking of damper winding, and the damper winding is a key component for ensuring the reliable operation of generators. Therefore, it is important to study the distribution characteristics and the influence factors of eddy current loss. Taking a 24-MW bulb tubular turbine generator as a reference, the influence factors that affect the eddy current loss of damper winding are analyzed.
Design/methodology/approach
A two-dimensional (2-D) electromagnetic field model of the generator is established, and the correctness of the model is verified by comparing simulation results and experiment data. The eddy current losses of damper winding in various conditions are calculated by using the finite element method.
Findings
It is identified that the cogging effect, pole shoe magnetic saturation degree, pole arc coefficient and armature reaction are the main factors that affect the eddy current loss of the generator rotor. When the generator is installed with magnetic slot wedges, the distribution characteristic of eddy current loss is obtained through the study of the eddy current density distributions in the damper bars. The variations of eddy current losses with time are gained when the generator has different permeability slot wedges, pole arc coefficients and pole shoe magnetic saturation degrees.
Practical implications
The study of this paper provides a theoretical reference for the design and optimization of bulb tubular turbine generator structure.
Originality/value
The research can help enhance the understanding of eddy current distribution characteristics and influence factors of eddy current loss in bulb tubular turbine generator.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper proposes a robust modeling method of a giant magnetostrictive actuator which has a rate‐dependent nonlinear property.
Design/methodology/approach
It is known in statistics that the Least Wilcoxon learning method developed using Wilcoxon norm is robust against outliers. Thus, it is used in the paper to determine the consequence parameters of the fuzzy rules to reduce the sensitiveness to the outliers in the input‐output data. The proposed method partitions the input space adaptively according to the distribution of samples and the partition is irrelative to the dimension of the input data set.
Findings
The proposed modeling method can effectively construct a unique dynamic model that describes the rate‐dependent hysteresis in a given frequency range with respect to different single‐frequency and multi‐frequency input signals no matter whether there exist outliers in the training set or not. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective and insensitive against the outliers.
Originality/value
The main contributions of this paper are: first, an intelligent modeling method is proposed to deal with the rate‐dependent hysteresis presented in the giant magnetostrictive actuator and the modeling precision can fulfill the requirement of engineering, such as the online modeling issue in the active vibration control; and second, the proposed method can handle the outliers in the input‐output data effectively.

Abstract
Purpose
In this paper, improvements in reducing transmitted accelerations in a full vehicle are obtained by optimizing the gain parameters of an active control in a roughness road profile.
Design/methodology/approach
For a classically designed linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control, the vibration attenuation performance will depend on weighting matrices Q and R. A methodology is proposed in this work to determine the optimal elements of these matrices by using a genetic algorithm method to get enhanced controller performance. The active control is implemented in an eight degrees of freedom (8-DOF) vehicle suspension model, subjected to a standard ISO road profile. The control performance is compared against a controlled system with few Q and R parameters, an active system without optimized gain matrices, and an optimized passive system.
Findings
The control with 12 optimized parameters for Q and R provided the best vibration attenuation, reducing significantly the Root Mean Square (RMS) accelerations at the driver’s seat and car body.
Research limitations/implications
The research has positive implications in a wide class of active control systems, especially those based on a LQR, which was verified by the multibody dynamic systems tested in the paper.
Practical implications
Better active control gains can be devised to improve performance in vibration attenuation.
Originality/value
The main contribution proposed in this work is the improvement of the Q and R parameters simultaneously, in a full 8-DOF vehicle model, which minimizes the driver’s seat acceleration and, at the same time, guarantees vehicle safety.

Abstract
Purpose
The research in competitive facility location (CFL) is quite dynamic, both from a problem formulation and an algorithmic point of view. Research direction has changed immensely over the years to address various competitive challenges. This study aims to explore CFL literature to highlight these research trends, important issues and future research opportunities.
Design/methodology/approach
This study utilises the Scopus database to search for related CFL models and adopts a five-step systematic approach for the review process. The five steps involve (1) Article Identification and keyword selection, (2) Selection criteria, (3) Literature review, (4) Literature analysis and (5) Research studies.
Findings
The paper presents a comprehensive review of CFL modelling efforts from 1981 to 2021 to provide a depth study of the research evolution in this area. The published articles are classified based on multiple characteristics, including the type of problem, type of competition, game-theoretical approaches, customer behaviour, decision space, type of demand, number of facilities, capacity and budget limitations. The review also highlights the popular problem areas and dedicated research in the respective domain. In addition, a second classification is also provided based on solution methods adopted to solve various CFL models and real-world case studies.
Originality/value
The paper covers 40 years of CFL literature from the perspective of the problem area, CFL characteristics and the solution approach. Additionally, it introduces characteristics such as capacity limit and budget constraint for the first time for classification purposes.
