Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to understand the influences of tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate oleate and oleic acid tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate phosphate ester on biodegradability and tribological performances of mineral lubricating oil.

Design/methodology/approach

Tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate oleate and oleic acid tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate phosphate ester were prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The biodegradability and tribological properties of neat oil and its formulations were studied on a tester for fast evaluating biodegradability of lubricants and a four-ball tester, respectively. The worn surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope.

Findings

Tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate oleate and oleic acid tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate phosphate ester both improved markedly the biodegradability, the anti-wear properties, friction-reducing properties and extreme pressure properties of base oil. The effect of oleic acid tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate phosphate ester was better than tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate oleate. The improvement of tribological performances was mainly ascribed to the formation of a complicated boundary lubrication film of tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate oleate and oleic acid tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate phosphate ester on the friction surfaces.

Originality/value

This paper has indicated that tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate oleate and oleic acid tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate phosphate ester effectively improve the biodegradability and tribological performances of mineral lubricating oil. Promoting biodegradation of mineral lubricant by additives is very significant for the development of petroleum-based biodegradable lubricants. These two additives not merely improve the tribological performances; more importantly, they improve the ecological performances.

Case overview

Noah Wealth Management was founded by Ms Wang Jingbo, a lady in her mid 30s with a team of less than 20 members in 2005. Exploiting market opportunities offered by a lack of good wealth management products and services, Noah grew rapidly from one branch office in 2005 to 59 branch offices in 2011, reaching a staff size of 1,031. Noah listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange in November 2010. In 2011, Noah was ranked No. 38 among the 100 Top Potential Enterprises in China. Nonetheless, Noah faced several problems of internal management during the course of its fast expansion. In the first quarter financial report of 2012, Noah suffered a 52.6 percent decrease in net income over the corresponding period in 2011. Faced with a rapidly declining share price, Noah announced on May 22, 2012 a US $30 million share repurchase program.

Expected learning outcomes

The case supports a basic lesson on the entrepreneurial cycle, including assessing a business opportunity, resource mobilization, identifying a business model, growth of the venture, listing on the stock market, and subsequent growth challenges. Students can learn about some of the typical dilemmas faced by founders of entrepreneurial ventures, including how to maintain the corporate culture while growing fast and how to prevent members of the founding team from becoming bottlenecks to the development of the organization. The case can also provide management students with an overview of China's wealth management industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the inverse kinematics and task space dynamic model, this paper aims to design a high-precision trajectory tracking controller for a 2-DoF translational parallel manipulator (TPM) driven by linear motors.

Design/methodology/approach

The task space dynamic model of a 2-DoF TPM is derived using Lagrangian equation of the first type. A task space dynamic model-based feedforward controller (MFC) is designed, which is combined with a cascade PID/PI controller and velocity feedforward controller (VFC) to construct a hybrid PID/PI+VFC/MFC controller. The hybrid controller is implemented in MATLAB/dSPACE real-time control platform. Experiment results are given to validate the effectiveness and industrial applicability of the hybrid controller.

Findings

The MFC can compensate for the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a 2-DoF TPM and achieve better tracking performance than the conventional acceleration feedforward controller (AFC).

Originality/value

The task space dynamic model-based hybrid PID/PI+VFC/MFC controller is proposed for a 2-DoF linear-motor-driven TPM, which reduces the tracking error by at least 15 percent compared with conventional hybrid PID/PI+VFC/AFC controller. This control scheme can be extended to high-speed and high-precision trajectory tracking control of other parallel manipulators by reprogramming the feedforward signals of traditional cascade PID/PI controller.

Abstract

Purpose

Shifting to OLSL classes during the pandemic can bring learners ambivalent experiences: negative, positive or both appraisals toward the technologies. However, few studies have examined how ambivalent experiences can influence students' learning behaviors, specifically cyberslacking and active participation. Using the challenge-hindrance stressor framework, this study investigates the impact of challenge and hindrance appraisals on these learning behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a mixed methods approach to answer research questions. An interview was conducted to identify the key components of ambivalent appraisals, and a survey was conducted to empirically examine the impact of challenge and hindrance appraisals on learners' behaviors in online live streaming learning (OLSL) contexts. The data of 675 university students were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

This study found that hindrance appraisal leads to cyberslacking while challenge appraisal leads to active participation, but it can also cause cyberslacking. Social presence has a double-edged effect, acting as both a facilitator and inhibitor, strengthening the effect of hindrance appraisal on cyberslacking and the impact of challenge appraisal on active participation.

Originality/value

Prior studies have primarily focused on the negative side (techno-distress) of technology appraisals. This study simultaneously examines the positive side, techno-eustress, on learners' behaviors in OLSL contexts, and explores the moderating effects of social presence. This study contributes to the technostress and technology adaptation literature by revealing how technology-induced ambivalent appraisals impact behavioral responses. It offers important theoretical and practical implications for education tool designers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the nonlinear analysis on the relay feedback technology (RFT) applied to parameters identification of servo mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to investigate nonlinear elements' influence on RFT, the analysis was conducted in the velocity and current control loops, respectively. The RFT algorithm for modeling servo mechanism with friction was developed to overcome the nonlinear influence. Furthermore, the results from experiments were presented to validate the analysis and illustrated the advantages of the proposed method.

Findings

The Coulomb friction and current changing are the main nonlinear influence on the RFT application in servo mechanism. The friction effects should be included to servo system modeling based on RFT.

Practical implications

Some suggestions concluded from nonlinear analysis are useful to optimize the selection of parameters in RFT. And the proposed algorithm is applicable to modeling servo mechanism with friction.

Originality/value

The nonlinear analysis in the different control loops of servo mechanism based on RFT is presented and the effective identification approach is proposed in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce corporate social responsibility into the green supply chain and analyse the impact of different decision makers’ decision-making schemes on carbon emission reduction in the supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a two-stage low-carbon supply chain composed of a manufacturer and retailer as the research object. It uses the Stackelberg game model to analyse optimal carbon emission reduction and its influence under different decision-making modes.

Findings

Increased consumer green preferences and trust can improve the manufacturing enterprises’ carbon emission reduction rate. The carbon emission reduction rate decreases with increased green innovation costs. When green technology innovation costs remain constant, the greater the market capacity, the higher the carbon emission reduction rate. Market capacity has the most significant impact on the optimal carbon emission reduction rate without considering social responsibility decisions and has the least impact on the optimal carbon emission reduction rate while fully considering the social responsibility decision. To achieve decarbonisation production, the market capacity must be small, and when green innovation costs are high, it is the optimal choice without considering social responsibility. To achieve a higher level of carbon emission reduction, when the market capacity is low and the research and development cost is high or when the market capacity is large, it is the optimal choice.

Originality/value

The results provide scientific policy decisions and management significance for governments and enterprises in low-carbon subsidies and supply chain management. The findings also provide a basis for future theoretical research and enterprise practice.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how perceived working conditions affect employee performance, including safety compliance and task performance, through employee well-being (i.e. job satisfaction) in the context of the coal mining sector in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses the job demands-resources model to test the relationships between working conditions, including job demands (work pressure as a challenge demand and perceived risks and hazards in the workplace and ineffectiveness of the safety system as hindrance demands), job resources (interpersonal harmony), job satisfaction and performance. This study adopts a two-wave design with a three-month lag to reduce possible common method bias.

Findings

Employees who experienced high level of challenge demands, e.g. time pressure workload, reported higher levels of task performance, and this positive relationship seemed to be robust. There is a direct effect of perceived ineffectiveness of the safety system on task performance, while the relationship between perceived risks and hazards and task performance was fully mediated by job satisfaction. Challenge demands, i.e. work pressure, did not impact much on employees’ well-being, and thus job satisfaction did not mediate the relationship between work pressure and performance. Perceived ineffectiveness of the safety system was negatively associated with safety compliance. This result is not surprising since a lack of effective safety system reflects management’s ignorance of workplace safety, which demotivates employees to enact safe behaviors. In contrast, the presence and implementation of an effective safety system would be interpreted by employees as management exhibiting a high level of commitment. Work pressure was positively not negatively related to safety compliance. One possible explanation for this finding is that the effects of work pressure on safety compliance behaviors might be dependent on contextual factors such as safety climate. Interpersonal harmony moderated the relationships between work pressure and employee performance (both safety compliance and task performance) and the relationship between perceived risks and hazards and task performance, but the role of interpersonal harmony appeared more complex. There was no significant correlation between challenging job demands and individual employee performance when there were higher levels of interpersonal harmony. The relationship between perceived risks and hazards, a hindrance job demand and task performance became positive as interpersonal harmony increased but negative as interpersonal harmony decreased.

Originality/value

This paper provides a robust integrative theoretical framework that better explains the various types of job demands and job resources in the working environment of coal mining sector in China and their relationships to employee performance. The findings also offer valuable guidance for managers trying to identify effective ways to enhance employee performance and safety in the workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to help scholars to know the frontiers in the strategic management field. On studying, it was noted that business strategic management originated from America in the 1960s and has experienced more than half a century. However, strategic management development lacks systematical summary in the twenty-first century. The scientometric method was appliedto find out the frontiers and progress of the research of strategic management in the twenty-first century, based on the literature from 2001 to 2012 in the Strategic Management Journal.

Design/methodology/approach

In the paper, the authors mainly used the scientometric method and applied keywords, co-occurrence method combined with multistatistical methods and mutation words analysis, author co-citation, literature co-citation and keywords co-occurrence (national).

Findings

The findings show that the strategic management research focuses on the following theories and academic thoughts: knowledge-based view, network organization research and dynamic capability are the mainstream; besides, strategy risk, the stakeholders analysis of strategy management, corporate reputation and strategic concept also attract the attention of researchers; Barney, Teece and Porter have made significant contributions to strategy management research since the twenty-first century.

Originality/value

The findings in the paper will help scholars in the field of strategic management to know the main frontiers of the theory, as well as the main contributors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to contribute to the performance improvement and the broader application of hot-dip galvanized coating.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the ability to provide barrier protection, galvanic protection, and corrosion product protection provided by hot-dip galvanized coating is introduced. Then, according to the varying Fe content, the growth process of each sublayer within the hot-dip galvanized coating, as well as their respective microstructures and physical properties, is presented. Finally, the electrochemical corrosion behaviors of the different sublayers are analyzed.

Findings

The hot-dip galvanized coating is composed of η-Zn sublayer, ζ-FeZn13 sublayer, δ-FeZn10 sublayer, and Γ-Fe3Zn10 sublayer. Among these sublayers, with the increase in Fe content, the corrosion potential moves in a noble direction.

Research limitations/implications

There is a lack of research on the corrosion behavior of each sublayer of hot-dip galvanized coating in different electrolytes.

Practical implications

It provides theoretical guidance for the microstructure control and performance improvement of hot-dip galvanized coatings.

Originality/value

The formation mechanism, coating properties, and corrosion behavior of different sublayers in hot-dip galvanized coating are expounded, which offers novel insights and directions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to solve the problem that multiscale dispersion entropy (MDE) is prone to information loss in the process of coarse-grain, which makes it difficult to extract bearing fault information comprehensively.

Design/methodology/approach

A new fault diagnosis method of rolling bearing using refined composite multiscale peak-to-peak normalized dispersion entropy (RCMPNDE) and sparrow search algorithm optimized probabilistic neural network (SSA-PNN) is proposed. First, coarse-graining employs the peak-to-peak value calculation instead of the segmented mean calculation in the RCMDE algorithm, which can overcome the shortcomings of traditional coarse-graining and highlight the fault characteristics. Then, the influence of the selection of different parameters is reduced through the normalization operation, and the RCMPNDE is formed. Finally, the extracted feature parameters are combined with SSA-PNN for diagnosis recognition to construct the RCMPNDE-SSA-PNN fault diagnosis method.

Findings

The proposed RCMPNDE-SSA-PNN fault diagnosis method is tested on actual data sets and its outcomes have been compared to those generated by methods built upon MDE, RCMDE and PNN. The comparison results showed that the proposed method can extract the fault feature information of rolling bearings more accurately and improve the accuracy of fault classification. The recognition accuracy reached 98.5% under the conditions of this experiment.

Originality/value

The RCMPNDE-SSA-PNN method can obtain more accurate fault diagnosis accuracy and provide a new reliable diagnosis method for rolling bearing fault diagnosis.
