Abstract
Many of you must have enjoyed the ersatz (or kitsch) view of Jewish traditional life in ‘Fiddler on the roof’. Topol banging and roaring out ‘Tradition’ is hugely enjoyable. But it is more than a good actor and a vigorous song. It is an appeal to the past; not nostalgia for the past as a dead thing—like Queen Anne—but as a living continuity.
This paper is based on public library experience and draws mostly on Devon but aims to cover themes and messages which apply equally to other libraries and information services.

Abstract
“The dark” has long been associated with women. An attempt is made here to show how the “dark” can be seen as a valuable and significant concept for women understanding themselves as women and their situation for developing a view towards the concept of “power”. Women, as women, have a responsibility to themselves and others to make their voices heard and to become aware of their particular strengths and to develop these strengths both inside and outside existing organisations. Most current organisations are “male‐dominated” and “male” in approach. Both men and women are frequently unaware of the extent to which they are influenced and operating from a gender‐specific approach. Men and women can equally shape their organisations when women reclaim their strengths and refuse their position as a less important, less informed, “minority” status. The issues of conflict and trust in organisations and problem areas in relationships between women are explored.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the transformative role of Sora in education and libraries. This study aims to explore Sora’s capabilities and potential implications for enhancing learning experiences and enriching library resources.
Design/methodology/approach
Using an exploratory approach, this paper analyzes Sora’s functionalities, focusing on its ability to convert textual descriptions into dynamic video content swiftly and accurately. It examines the ways in which Sora can augment learning through interactivity, personalization and accessibility, as well as its capacity to digitize cultural heritage and promote literacy in library settings.
Findings
Sora emerges as a potential powerful tool for education and libraries, offering opportunities for diverse learning modalities, creativity and critical thinking. Its capacity to facilitate immersive storytelling and educational gamification holds promise for engaging users and fostering community involvement. However, ethical considerations such as bias mitigation and equitable access must be addressed to maximize Sora’s benefits.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the understanding of artificial intelligence’s potential in education and libraries, particularly through the lens of Sora.

Abstract
The author’s story of a familial connection on the move was part of the research process of an ethnographic project about a demolished ex-industrial village. Growing up in the 1970s, the author’s fatherless childhood was silently lived out in its spatial geography. The author’s proximate, unknown father was a potent figure that the author would glimpse in the street spaces but was never allowed to acknowledge. Twentieth century accounts of working-class life have little to say on the personal stories of families where ‘father’ was rarely present (Steedman, 1986). Here the author offers a daughter’s emotional geography of fatherlessness. To sketch a socio-cultural backcloth to the personal subplot, the author draws on scholarship about fatherhood, fatherlessness and lone motherhood as a way to discuss men’s involvement in fathering in relation to the author’s own experience of living without a father in a paternalistic company village. Turning to the author’s return in 2015 as a researcher, the author uses autoethnography to explore the personal familial subplot bubbling underneath the main project. The author charts how the methodologies used held affordances which offered a process of coming to terms with the inter-connections of spatial and familial absence and loss: the loss of author’s home-village where memories of an absent father were played out and the revelation of the loss of an already absent father through a DNA test. In this way, it traces the shifting movements of a familial (dis)-connection through memories, photographs and mobile research encounters against the backcloth of the absent spaces of an ex-industrial community.

One of the arguments used against British entry to the EEC was the loss of sovereignty; that Parliament would not be able to fully control all the statutory measures which would be applied to the people. EEC regulations apply without implementation by national governments, but since member‐states, through their representatives on Council and Commission, have participated, it is considered that national governments have in effect enacted them. EEC Directives as the name implies requires national governments to apply the provisions of the EEC measure; transitional exemptions up to five years are usually included for individual provisions, where internal adjustment is required. MAFF food regulations, implementing EEC Directives, have been made after this pattern for a number of food additives. The statutory measures are unlikely to present any greater difficulties than usual, but in interpretation, courts in this country have to consider EEC law above that of English and Scottish courts. The Court at Luxemburg exists mainly for interpretation, but courts and litigants have been advised against reference owing to the lengthy delays and the high court or court of sessions should make is interpretation based on EEC law.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the design of state school buildings in Australia from the 1880s to the 1980s to establish common threads or similar concerns evident in their architecture at a national level.
Design/methodology/approach
The researcher compiled a significant data set of hundreds of state schools, derived from government, professional and other publications, archival searches and site visits. Standard analytical methods in architectural research are employed, including stylistic and morphological analysis, to read the designs for meaning and intent.
Findings
The data set was interrogated to draw out major themes in school design, the identification of which form the basis of the paper's argument. Four major themes, identifiable at a national level, are identified: school as house; school as civic; school as factory; and school as town. Each theme reflects a different chronological period, being approximately 1900-1920, 1920-1940, 1940-1960 and 1960-1980. The themes reflect the changing representation of aspiration for the school child and their engagement with wider society through the architecture of the school.
Originality/value
The paper considers, for the first time, the concerns of educational architecture over time in Australia on a consciously national, rather than state, level.
