Abstract

This paper will argue that current attempts at making systems user‐friendly for businessmen and the public at large are doomed to failure because they do not deal with the key issues of document organization, selection, classification, summarization, and interpretation.

Abstract

Software benefit no deal When Chancellor Norman Lamont presented the Government's Budget this spring, he proposed that up front or lump sum payments for software licences qualify for a 25% annual tax deduction. This so‐called benefit is not as attractive as it sounds, says Daniel Feingold, a tax specialist at the London law firm Bird & Bird, and could leave users worse off.

Abstract

Telephone directories have been an integral part of most public and academic libraries for nearly a century. Telephone directories represent an anomaly among library collections; known to virtually all users, they nevertheless often go unrecognized when librarians discuss reference sources. The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to examine the history of telephone directory collections; second, to describe and analyze a survey of telephone directory collection use.

Abstract

The literature of ethnic ownership economies descends from middleman minority theory, a subject it continues to include. However, ethnic economy literature now more broadly addresses the economic independence of immigrants and ethnic minorities in general, not just of middleman minorities (Light & Bonacich, 1991, pp. xii–xiii).1 This expansion releases the subject from narrow concentration upon historical trading minorities, and opens discussion of the entire range of immigrant and ethnic minority strategies for economic self-help and self-defense. Partial or full economic independence represents a ubiquitous self-defense of immigrants and ethnic minorities who confront exclusion or disadvantage in labor markets. Ethnic economies permit immigrants and ethnic minorities to reduce disadvantage and exclusion, negotiating the terms of their participation in the general labor market from a position of greater strength. Unable to find work in the general labor market, or unwilling to accept the work that the general labor market offers, or just reluctant to mix with foreigners, immigrants and ethnic minorities have the option of employment or self-employment in the ethnic economy of their group. Although ethnic and immigrant groups differ in how well and how much they avail themselves of this defense (Collins, 2003; Light & Gold, 2000, p. 34; Logan & Alba, 1999, p. 179), none lacks an ethnic economy.2

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between the perceptions of local residents concerning political factors and support for tourism development in the Kashmir region.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data have been collected (n = 650) from the residents of the top five tourist destinations (Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Srinagar, Sonamarg and Kokernag) through a pre-tested questionnaire by multistage sampling method. In presence of non-normal data, the partial least squares structural equation model is applied for analysis. The study is based on the theoretical framework of social exchange theory (SET) and institutional theory of political trust (ITPT).

Findings

Results suggest that trust in government, the perceived economic performance of government and level of power are negative determinants of support for tourism development, which nullifies SET for politically disturbed regions.

Originality/value

The results of this study are useful for the local government and tourism institutions in policy formation and fill the vast gap in tourism literature with a theoretical base. This study is also an addition to the existing literature on city tourism for the politically disturbed region.

Abstract

Purpose

Healthcare organizations are rethinking their practices in response to the framework provided by the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The purpose of this paper is to explore whether, how and why sustainable development practices have been implemented in the healthcare sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on a systematic literature review, carried out using Scopus and Web of Science databases. The papers were analyzed according to the five activity-based theoretical framework categories: purpose, subject, community, object and practices.

Findings

Results reveal a lack of research regarding the integration of sustainable development and SDGs into managerial systems or functions. Moreover, they identify key areas of interest within sustainable development and healthcare practices, offering guidance for future research and strategies to better align healthcare with the SDGs.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper that aims to summarize the scientific literature on this topic through the lens of the activity-based theoretical framework, allowing for an analysis of the literature that investigates how sustainable development practices shape organizational life.
