Abstract
Skills Approach leadership development suggests individuals can develop the skills, abilities, and behaviors needed to lead. However, it can be difficult to understand and apply these theoretical concepts. Movies provide a storytelling platform enabling learners to link theory to practice. This article uses 300 to explore skills-based leadership theories. 300 (2007) is an adaptation of Frank Miller’s novel depicting the Battle of Thermopylae (400 B.C.) between Greece and Persia. The movie tells the story of how King Leonidas led 300 Spartan warriors in battle against King Xerxes’ army in defense of Spartan land, values, and freedom. We provide background on Katz’s (1955) and Mumford, Zacaro, Harding, Jacobs, and Fleishman (2000) skills approaches. Then we describe how theoretical concepts associated with these approaches can be found in the movie. Finally, we provide suggestions for experiential learning activities which serve to help participants link and apply theory to practice.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper advocates the use of graph database platforms to investigate networks of illicit companies identified in money laundering schemes. It explains the setup of the data structure to investigate a network of illicit companies identified in cases of money laundering schemes and presents its key application in practice. Grounded in the technology acceptance model (TAM), this paper aims to present key operationalisations and theoretical considerations for effectively driving and facilitating its wider adoption among a range of stakeholders focused on anti-money laundering solutions.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper explores the benefits of adopting graph databases and critiques their limitations by drawing on primary data collection processes that have been undertaken to derive a network topology. Such representation on a graph database platform provides the opportunity to uncover hidden relationships critical for combatting illicit activities such as money laundering.
Findings
The move to adopt a graph database for storing information related to corporate entities will aid investigators, journalists and other stakeholders in the identification of hidden links among entities to deter activities of corruption and money laundering.
Research limitations/implications
This paper does not display the nodal data as it is framed as a background to how graph databases can be used in practice.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no studies in the past have considered companies from multiple cases in the same graph network and attempted to investigate the links between them. The advocation for such an approach has significant implications for future studies.

Abstract
Purpose
Merger waves have typically been viewed through the prism of either corporate strategy or macro-economics. This paper aims to broaden debate about factors that cause – or are associated with – mergers/merger waves over a 120-year period. It ascribes “personalities” to six distinct waves and draws an overarching conclusion about how merger architects are viewed.
Design/methodology/approach
Databases and interviews are used to piece together detail about CEOs associated with six distinct and recognized merger-waves during a 120-year focal period. The study establishes and defends, a priori, principles for interrogating data to get a sense of each wave-era’s corporate personality/idiosyncrasy. For each era, two exemplar CEO-profiles are presented and – through inductive-reasoning – held out as representative.
Findings
Distinct personalities are associated with six merger waves. Each wave is given a summary anthropomorphic description which conveys a sense that it may be viewed as the non-rationale expression of aggregate and historically distinct CEO behavior within a circumscribed timeframe.
Research limitations/implications
The work’s key limitation – explicitly acknowledged – is that it amassed data/evidence from disparate historical sources. However, the authors have developed and defended principles for addressing this concern.
Practical implications
Improved investment analyses, in particular. The work prefigures formal establishment of a new variable-set impacting share-price prediction.
Social implications
The paper offers a perspective on how psychological/personality-related variables impact management decision-making, creating something of a bridge between mostly non-overlapping research disciplines.
Originality/value
The paper broadens debate about how and why merger waves occur. It removes the exclusive analysis of merger waves from the hands of economic historians and strategic management theorists.

Purpose
Competition for resources appears to be increasing at a time of political, security (including energy, food and climate) and economic change; leading to potential collapse. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to examine the impact of policies exercised at the macro level on methods and processes applied at the micro level through, for example, performance management. It looks at the impact at the micro level on the macro and upon industry, innovation and the generation of productive wealth. It contrasts the techno‐socio application of Lean with the socio‐techno dynamics of agility as impacted by the info‐techno‐socio and emerging socio‐info‐techno systems.
Design/methodology/approach
From collaborative doctoral level research and an extensive literature review – integrating the three cultures (the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities) – macro/global and local/micro cross level thematic complex systems models were identified and modelled across their connecting political, security and economic ecologies. Connecting models were designed considering “trust” and “risk” as applied to socio, techno and info‐techno systems. These systems were then considered in terms of lean and agility and their impact “in the extreme” and “over time” on complex political, security economic models.
Findings
Lean in the extreme can lead to vertical polarisation; causing conditions for competition leading to hyper‐competition.
Originality/value
Complex models are considered and explained by historical reference and story‐telling so as to enable access across different disciplines and to explain and potentially inspire researchers, managers, consultants and workers to consider alternative less competitive and more agile, collaborative and adaptive futures.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective of the study is to use the constructs in the theory of planned behavior and advertising intervention to predict adolescents' intention for healthy eating.
Design/methodology/approach
A convenience sample survey of 570 secondary school students aged 11 to 19 studying in Form 1 (equivalent to Grade 7) to Form 5 (equivalent to Grade 11) was conducted in Hong Kong.
Findings
Perceived behavior control was the most important factor in predicting behavioral intention for healthy eating, followed by attitude toward healthy eating and subjective norms. Perceived behavior control, attitude and subjective norms together explained 45 percent of the variance of behavioral intention. Respondents' attitudes towards advertisement advocating healthy eating had high positive correlation with attitudes toward healthy eating.
Research limitations/implications
First, the sample was not a probability sample. Second, the data were collected through face‐to‐face interviews and respondents may tend to give socially desirable answers to the questions.
Practical implications
Hong Kong adolescents found healthy eating beneficial and desirable, but boring and not‐enjoyable. Future health promotion campaigns should put emphasis on the fun and enjoyable attributes of healthy eating. As perceived norms were sourced from the government and the family, health campaigns should continue to communicate the positive value of healthy eating to the family, and the society.
Originality/value
The current study is the first to adopt the theory of planned behavior and the advertising intervention to predict the effects on healthy eating in a Chinese society.
