Increasing numbers of MBA schools are responding by changing their programmes, but the pursuit of academic rigour may have prevented fundamental change. Considers a number of trends affecting the MBA environment that will continue to reshape business schools. Those that can take the mandate of change seriously will enjoy the “best of times”.

Abstract

Justifying new manufacturing technology is usually very difficult since the most important benefits are often strategic and difficult to quantify. Traditional capital budgeting procedures that rely on return measures based on direct cost savings and incremental future cash flows do not normally capture the strategic benefits of higher quality, faster responses to wider ranges of customer needs, and the options for future growth made available by flexible manufacturing technology. Adding to these limitations is the difficulty of using traditional cost accounting systems to generate the information necessary for justifying new manufacturing investments. This paper reviews these problems and recommends procedures useful for assessing investments in flexible manufacturing technology.

This chapter asks whether the Asian crisis was a failure of Asian capitalism, or a failure of market capitalism. It begins with a stylized chronology of events that is broadly consistent with either hypothesis. It then re-tells the story, first through a ‘government failure’ lens, and next through a ‘market failure’ lens. The chapter concludes by reporting what theoretical and policy consensus has so far emerged within the economics profession, as well as the quandries that remain.

Abstract

Explains that benchmarking ‐ the process of identifying superior performance or practices of other organizations and internalizing such knowledge for competitive advantage ‐ is performed typically on a project‐by‐project basis. Argues that a better understanding of benchmarking at the project level would help to reveal reasons for successful benchmarking at the organizational level. Develops a conceptual model to address the question of how characteristics of benchmarking teams and partner organizations impact on benchmarking project outcomes. The model focuses on the interaction of key teamwork and organizational variables, and provides a basis for empirical testing of benchmarking project implementation effectiveness.

Abstract

Many practitioners strive to increase the efficiency of their product development. In addition, smaller companies must satisfy customers’ expectations of their product development. These expectations can be e.g. use of specific methodologies such as Lean Product Development (LPD) and/or Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). This study attempts to identify differences and similarities between these methodologies and the connection between them. This comparison is of interest to practitioners that must choose a strategy for their product development as well as to researchers. The aim of both methodologies is to reduce waste and time of development and to raise the quality of a product at the very roots of the product: its development. LPD and DFSS help development managers to structure projects and focus as much as possible on customer expectations and satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores if and how Artificial Intelligence can contribute to marketing strategy formulation.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative research based on exploratory in-depth interviews with industry experts currently working with artificial intelligence tools.

Findings

Key themes include: (1) Importance of AI in strategic marketing decision management; (2) Presence of AI in strategic decision management; (3) Role of AI in strategic decision management; (4) Importance of business culture for the use of AI; (5) Impact of AI on the business’ organizational model. A key consideration is a “creative-possibility perspective,” highlighting the future potential to use AI not only for rational but also for creative thinking purposes.

Research limitations/implications

This work is focused only on strategy creation as a deliberate process. For this, AI can be used as an effective response to the external contingencies of high volumes of data and uncertain environmental conditions, as well as being an effective response to the external contingencies of limited managerial cognition. A key future consideration is a “creative-possibility perspective.”

Practical implications

A practical extension of the Gartner Analytics Ascendancy Model (Maoz, 2013).

Originality/value

This paper aims to contribute knowledge relating to the role of AI in marketing strategy formulation and explores the potential avenues for future use of AI in the strategic marketing process. This is explored through the lens of contingency theory, and additionally, findings are expressed using the Gartner analytics ascendancy model.

Abstract

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.
