Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to make a performance model of a shoe upper manufacturing unit of a shoe manufacturing industry by computing both the availabilities, i.e. time dependent system availability (TDSA) and the long‐term availability.
Design/methodology/approach
The present work is carried out by developing performance model based on Markov birth‐death process. The unit consists of four subsystems. The first order governing differential equations are derived using the mnemonic rule and further solved by adaptive step‐size control Runge‐Kutta method to calculate the TDSA, while the long‐term availability is calculated using normalizing condition, initial boundary conditions and recursive method. Both the availabilities are considered for system's performance criterion.
Findings
The subsystem A, i.e. sewing machine is the most critical from maintenance point of view, which has more impact on the system's performance as compare to other subsystems. The repair priorities of other subsystems have also been proposed.
Practical implications
These methods can also be used to find out the performance of other manufacturing industries.
Originality/value
The results of the present work are very useful for finding the critical subsystem and its effect on the system performance in terms of availability. Further, based on findings the maintenance priorities of various subsystems can be decided.

Abstract
The amount of online information and discussion relevant to library and information activities has expanded very rapidly recently, particularly as a consequence of the development of Internet. The results are presented here of a detailed survey of the coverage Internet provides concerning the work of library and information specialists. The intention has been both to determine what is available and how best to access services from the UK. Especial emphasis is placed on the availability of relevant electronic journals.

Abstract
Librarians and information workers obviously are interested in electronic journals as a means of providing information to their customers. At the same time, members of the profession are becoming increasingly interested in accessing electronic journals that relate to their own specialist concerns. Looks at well‐established specialist library and information titles which are currently available online. Compares the nature and content of these electronic journals with those of major library and information journals available in printed form. This gives rise to the query whether current differences between printed and electronic journals in terms of content and approach are likely to continue in the future.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to outline selected presentations of the national seminar based on the theme “open access movement – initiatives, promotion and impact” organized by department of Library and Information Science, University of Kashmir held during 23‐25 October 2008 at Srinagar and narrates scenic beauty of Kashmir.
Design/methodology/approach
Conference report.
Findings
Many case studies and presentations were made about applications of OA software and the OA publishing model to overcome barriers and promote scholarly communication with special reference to Asia. These are included in this report.
Originality/value
Based on discussion during the seminar and personal interaction the author had with the participants, this report is a useful summary of open access related activities which is a topic of interest to managers of organizations, teachers and educators, librarians, open access protagonists and members of information provider communities. Some new ideas/study reports that have not been placed the traditional literature are introduced in the discussion.

This research examined the effects of information literacy on lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance among journalists in Pakistan.
Abstract
Purpose
This research examined the effects of information literacy on lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance among journalists in Pakistan.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey research design was applied to conduct this research. The participants were recruited through a stratified convenient sampling process from the press clubs of four provinces (e.g. Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan) and the federal capital Islamabad with the consent of relevant authorities for data collection. An online questionnaire was distributed among these journalists and a total of 1,089 responses were received. The data were analyzed by applying descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS.
Findings
The results revealed that these journalists perceived themselves as information literate. The information literacy (IL) skills of journalists appeared to have a direct and positive effect on their lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance. In other words, the lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance of journalists increase as their levels of IL skills increase.
Practical implications
These results generated useful insights for academicians and organizations about the importance of IL in the workplace and its influence on organizational effectiveness and performance in gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. This knowledge might be crucial for media employers to initiate training programs for journalists to impart IL education.
Originality/value
This research would be a worthwhile contribution to the existing research on workplace IL, particularly in the context of journalists' workplace as no such comprehensive study using these variables appeared so far.
