Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to give an overview of different methods to learning and development within an organization. It aims to promote the idea that, in many situations, learning derived from every day organizational activity is often more robust and meaningful than that gained from attendance at a training course.
Design/methodology/approach
Experience of learning and development across several organizations, including private, public and not‐for‐profit, provided the study with evidence that, despite theoretical acceptance of the value of flexible approaches to learning, there is still a strong reliance on the use of training courses as the primary method of learning. A case study is used to illustrate different learning approaches to a common development need.
Findings
The paper supports the stance that there are many different learning methods and approaches, all of which are equally valid, but some are not suitable for a specific person or situation. The key to achieving a competent and skilled staff group is to select the right learning method for the right person at the right time. The paper also puts forward the view that by relying on training courses organizations not only are reducing their ability to maximize learning but also are increasing their costs.
Originality/value
This paper offers training practitioners and business managers a variety of different approaches to meeting development needs.

Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this chapter is to enhance understanding of misbehavior through an exploration of film and TV treatments of workplace relations.
Methodology/approach – Analysis of examples of misbehavior drawn from film and TV within a theoretical framework informed by formal and substantive rationality.
Findings – Workplace definitions of misbehavior are multi-faceted, contextually specific, and both perspective- and power-dependent. They are constructed within workplace settings, where expressions of formal and substantive rationality intersect with everyday working practices.
Research limitations/Implications – The discussion is limited by the mainly fictional character of the resources used.
Practical implications – The chapter illustrates how representations of organizations as “rational” are limited and how more complex understandings of rationality might contribute to a more nuanced view of the co-production of workplace misbehavior practices by managers, workers, and/or unions.
Social implications – The chapter illustrates how multiple rationalities may be expressed and socially embedded within specific workplace settings.
Originality/Value of chapter – The focus on mainly fictional examples drawn from popular culture to interpret workplace behavior is the chapter's most distinctive feature.

Purpose
This paper describes the personal history and intellectual development of Morris B. Holbrook (MBH), a participant in the field of marketing academics in general and consumer research in particular.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper pursues an approach characterized by historical autoethnographic subjective personal introspection or HASPI.
Findings
The paper reports the personal history of MBH and – via HASPI – interprets various aspects of key participants and major themes that emerged over the course of his career.
Research limitations/implications
The main implication is that every scholar in the field of marketing pursues a different light, follows a unique path, plays by idiosyncratic rules, and deserves individual attention, consideration, and respect … like a cat that carries its own leash.
Originality/value
In the case of MBH, like (say) a jazz musician, whatever value he might have depends on his originality.

Within the past few years, responsible educators, librarians, parents, counselors, social workers, therapists, and religious groups of all sexual persuasions and lifestyles have recognized the need for readily available reading material for lesbian and gay youth. Unfortunately, this material is often buried, because it is embedded in larger works. To meet this need, I have compiled and annotated 100 of the best works for young homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals. I have also included a few of the best works currently available on heterosexuality as a much needed source of knowledge for all young adults whether they are gay or straight, whether they remain childless or eventually become parents.

Abstract
Taking a set of studies about business action as the empirical starting-point, this paper looks at the various ways in which action is represented. The overall research question can be stated as follows: how is business action reconstructed in our narratives? The texts analyzed are collected from research on exchange relationships in the field of marketing. To analyze how these texts depict business action, four narrative constructions are focused: space, time, actors, and plots. The categorization and analysis are summarized and followed by a set of concluding implications and suggestions for narrative practice aiming to reconstruct business action in the making.
