Abstract

The question of what it is fitting for children to read would seem to be one which is always being debated. “Cinderella,” wrote a woman in 1802, “is perhaps one of the most exceptionable books ever written for children. It paints some of the worst passions that can enter into the human breast— envy, jealousy, vanity, a love of dress.” The same writer disapproved of Robinson Crusoe, which, she feared, might lead “to an early taste for a rambling life and a love of adventure.” On August 12th, 1955, the leading article of The Times Literary Supplement, dealing with the quality of present day writing for children, speaks of “a kind of struggle that is now taking place in the battlefields of our children's souls between the child's active appetite for the particularity of experience and its passive vulnerability to the stereotype.” The Literary Supplement goes on to say: “Almost any child has at once more sensibility, and less discrimination, than almost any adult. And one of the most worrying things about some levels, at least, of our contemporary culture is the tendency to damp and dim that intrinsic sensibility and to exploit that innocence, that inability to discriminate.” This, be it noted, is not directed at the “Comics”, English or American, but at children's books, the books which fill the shelves of the libraries which the teacher is perpetually urging the child to join.

What evidence is available to assess the concrete effects of teacher unions on public schools and to provide a basis for the most reliable conclusions? Other reviews of teacher unions often ask related but different questions that emphasize the institutional context, evolution, and operation of collective bargaining in public schools. Two prominent examples of this genre are Teacher Unions in Schools (Johnson, 1984) and The Changing Idea of a Teachers’ Union (Kerchner & Mitchell, 1988). Other contributions to the present volume offer related perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend complex-shaped discrete element method simulations from a few thousand particles to millions of particles by using parallel computing on department of defense (DoD) supercomputers and to study the mechanical response of particle assemblies composed of a large number of particles in engineering practice and laboratory tests.

Design/methodology/approach

Parallel algorithm is designed and implemented with advanced features such as link-block, border layer and migration layer, adaptive compute gridding technique and message passing interface (MPI) transmission of C++ objects and pointers, for high performance optimization; performance analyses are conducted across five orders of magnitude of simulation scale on multiple DoD supercomputers; and three full-scale simulations of sand pluviation, constrained collapse and particle shape effect are carried out to study mechanical response of particle assemblies.

Findings

The parallel algorithm and implementation exhibit high speedup and excellent scalability, communication time is a decreasing function of the number of compute nodes and optimal computational granularity for each simulation scale is given. Nearly 50 per cent of wall clock time is spent on rebound phenomenon at the top of particle assembly in dynamic simulation of sand gravitational pluviation. Numerous particles are necessary to capture the pattern and shape of particle assembly in collapse tests; preliminary comparison between sphere assembly and ellipsoid assembly indicates a significant influence of particle shape on kinematic, kinetic and static behavior of particle assemblies.

Originality/value

The high-performance parallel code enables the simulation of a wide range of dynamic and static laboratory and field tests in engineering applications that involve a large number of granular and geotechnical material grains, such as sand pluviation process, buried explosion in various soils, earth penetrator interaction with soil, influence of grain size, shape and gradation on packing density and shear strength and mechanical behavior under different gravity environments such as on the Moon and Mars.

Abstract

Purpose

In real-world cases, it is common to encounter mixed discrete-continuous problems where some or all of the variables may take only discrete values. To solve these non-linear optimization problems, the use of finite element methods is very time-consuming. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithms for the mixed discrete-continuous optimization and compare it with the performance of genetic algorithms (GAs).

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the enhanced multipoint approximation method (MAM) is used to reduce the original nonlinear optimization problem to a sequence of approximations. Then, the sequential quadratic programing technique is applied to find the continuous solution. Following that, the implementation of discrete capability into the MAM is developed to solve the mixed discrete-continuous optimization problems.

Findings

The efficiency and rate of convergence of the developed hybrid algorithms outperforming GA are examined by six detailed case studies in the ten-bar planar truss problem, and the superiority of the Hooke–Jeeves assisted MAM algorithm over the other two hybrid algorithms and GAs is concluded.

Originality/value

The authors propose three efficient hybrid algorithms, the rounding-off, the coordinate search and the Hooke–Jeeves search-assisted MAMs, to solve nonlinear mixed discrete-continuous optimization problems. Implementations include the development of new procedures for sampling discrete points, the modification of the trust region adaptation strategy and strategies for solving mix optimization problems. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of metamodel construction, regressors f defined in this paper can have the form in common with the empirical formulation of the problems in many engineering subjects.

Abstract

Purpose

Robotics and automation are successful in construction, health and safety, but costs and expertise hinder their use in developing nations. This study examined mobile apps as a more accessible and affordable alternative.

Design/methodology/approach

This descriptive study explored the use of mobile apps in construction, health and safety management. It used a literature review to identify their availability, accessibility, and capabilities. The study consisted of four five stages: searching for relevant apps, selecting them based on versatility, examining their specific functions, removing untested apps and discussing their functions based on empirical studies.

Findings

A comprehensive literature review identified 35 mobile apps that are relevant to health and safety management during construction. After rigorous analysis, eight apps were selected for further study based on their relevance, user friendliness and compliance with safety standards. These apps collectively serve 28 distinct functions, including first-aid training and administration, safety compliance and danger awareness, safety education and training, hazard detection and warnings.

Practical implications

This study suggests that mobile apps can provide a cost-effective and readily accessible alternative to robotics and automation in health and safety management in construction. Further research is needed to accurately assess the efficacy of these apps in real-world conditions.

Originality/value

This study explored the use of apps in health and safety management, highlighting their diverse capabilities and providing a framework for project managers, contractors and safety officers to select suitable apps.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the best methods to improve wind turbine aerodynamic performance is modification of the blade’s airfoil. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of gurney flap geometry and its oscillation parameters on the pitching NACA0012 airfoil.

Design/methodology/approach

This numerical solution has been carried out for different cases of gurney flap mounting angles, heights, reduced frequencies and oscillation amplitudes, then the results were compared to each other. The finite volume method was used for the discretization of the governing equations, and the PISO algorithm was used to solve the equations. Also, the “SST” was adopted as the turbulence model in the simulation.

Findings

In this paper, the different parameters of gurney flap were investigated. The results showed that the best range of gurney flap height are between 1 and 3.2% of chord and the best ratio of lifting to drag coefficient is achieved in gurney flap with an angle of 90° relative to the chord direction. The dynamic stall angle of the airfoil with gurney flap decreases were compared to without gurney flap. Earlier LEV formation can be one of the main reasons for decreasing the dynamic stall angle of the airfoil with gurney flap. Increasing the reduced frequency and oscillation amplitude causes rising of maximum lift coefficient and consequently lift curve slope. Moreover, gurney flap with mounting angle has a lower hinge moment than the gurney flap without mounting angle but with the same vertical axis length. So, there is more complexity in structural design concerning the gurney flap without mounting angle.

Practical implications

Improving aerodynamic efficiency of airfoils is vital for obtaining more output power in VAWTs. Gurney flaps are one of the best mechanisms to increase the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil and increases the efficiency of VAWTs.

Originality/value

Investigating the hinge moment on the connection point of the airfoil, gurney flap and try to compare the gurney flap with and without angle.

Abstract

Purpose

The diverse impacts of brand logos on customer behaviour have garnered significant attention from scholars. However, the specific influences of halal brand logos remain mostly unexplored. This study aims to investigate the impact of halal brand logos on brand love, trust, self-brand connection and commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a survey to choose a sample of Indonesian Muslim customers who consumed halal brand foods, as indicated by the presence of the halal logo, throughout their travels in the years 2022–2023. The study was conducted using proportional random sampling among Muslim travellers in six provinces: Central Java, Yogyakarta, West Java, Jakarta, Banten and East Java. A total of 464 respondents participated in the poll. The analysis data used both confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling.

Findings

The findings demonstrated a strong and statistically significant impact of the halal brand logo on both brand love and brand trust. Likewise, brand love and brand trust have a strong and meaningful impact on the emotional connection with the brand. Ultimately, emotional attachment and personal identification with a brand have a strong and meaningful impact on the level of commitment towards that brand. However, the level of trust in a brand does not have a major beneficial effect on brand commitment.

Practical implications

Clarifying the theory of customer–brand relationships, the results of this study suggest that halal food producers should pursue halal certification to succeed in their business, as the halal brand logo has a crucial effect on customers’ brand commitment. Halal food providers should immediately adopt the halal logo or certification to enhance customer brand love, trust, self-brand connection and commitment.

Originality/value

This study gives new insight to explain the effect of the halal brand logo on Muslim customer behaviour based on customer–brand relationships and thus contributes to the marketing literature.
