Abstract

Application of the outputs from new technologies, particularly revolutionary new materials, is changing the concept of “total quality”. As a result there will be new dimensions to customer satisfaction in the twenty‐first century, and providers of goods and services need new management practices to meet these changing requirements. Most of the popular management models for process and product improvement, and their depiction of supplier/producer/user linkages, are now inadequate. They imply simple linear progression of ideas, information and product (from left to right in their diagrams), whereas, in reality, routings are more complex, with continual feedback and feed‐forward. Better models are available, and some of them are described here.

Abstract

An objective, two‐tier quantitative model has been developed for assessing the presence of total quality in an organisation, and for determining the effectiveness of a company’s total quality management initiatives. This was based on the hypothesis that, since the necessary and sufficient conditions for just‐in‐time inventory management and total quality management are almost identical, inventory performance should be a good indicator of quality achievement. A stand‐alone inventory rating method was used initially, and was later combined with return on capital and employee value indicators to create a model for more detailed evaluation. The two methods were tested on 48 companies. It was found that the inventory performance rating is a reliable indicator of a total quality organisation, and that the multifactor method is useful in identifying areas of success or failure. Both indicators predicted changes in overall business performance.

Abstract

Purpose

To develop a multi‐attribute decision making model for evaluating and selecting among logistic information technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

First a multi‐attribute decision making model for logistic information technology evaluation and selection consisting of 4 main and 11 sub criteria is constructed, then a hierarchical fuzzy TOPSIS method is developed to solve the complex selection problem with vague and linguistic data. Sensitivity analysis is presented.

Findings

Reviews the literature and provides a structured hierarchical model for logistic information technology evaluation and selection based on the premise that the logistic information technology evaluation and selection problem can be viewed as a product of tangible benefits, intangible benefits, policy issues and resources. Defines tangible benefits as cost savings, increased revenue, and return on investment; intangible benefits as customer satisfaction, quality of information, multiple uses of information, and setting tone for future business; policy issues as risk and necessity level; resources as costs and completion time. Presents a methodology that is developed for the complex, uncertain and vague characteristics of the problem.

Research limitations/implications

Comparisons with other multi‐attribute decision making techniques such as AHP, ELECTRE, PROMETHEE and ORESTE under fuzzy conditions can be done for further research.

Practical implications

This article is a very useful source of information both for logistic managers and stakeholders in making decisions about logistic information technology investments.

Originality/value

This paper addresses the logistic information technology evaluation and selection criteria for practitioners and proposes a new multi‐attribute decision making methodology, hierarchical fuzzy TOPSIS, for the problem.

Abstract

Considers the relationships between ISO 9000, TQM and business performance. It argues that the correlation between ISO 9000 and success is still weak, and that many organizations still have difficulty reconciling the apparent conflict between the “compliance” philosophy of ISO 9000, and the strong innovative demands of TQM. A way of reconciling these apparent conflicts is suggested, which entails the use of a third package of management tools to provide performance‐driven quality. This additional package harnesses the output of TQ initiatives to the continuous improvement of delivered quality of goods and services, and to the development of new customer‐pleasing products ‐ the elements that are missing from ISO 9000. A specific example of the ISO 9000/ TQM conflicts, and of successful use of a particular third package ‐ all within the same company ‐ is provided.

Abstract

Competition is a major driver of industry consolidation, pushing firms towards mergers or alliances. This paper discusses growing competitive challenges that make business partnering a core component of company strategy. We develop two frameworks for resource sharing using two dimensions: operational integration, and knowledge transferability. We analyze critical interface points at three levels in organizational design: corporate, business unit, and functional, and show that mergers could succeed without high level of integration. Large groups such as Renault and Ford witness such industry pressures from globalization, lower government protectionism, and shifts in buyer tastes. The framework illustrates preservation, incubation, osmosis, and full absorption as post-merger firm relationships, each requiring alignment with corporate strategy. The frameworks are illustrated using the Renault-Nissan relationship, the motivation behind it, its benefits, and its challenges.

Abstract

While the tourism industry generally rejects ISO 9000 as a standard irrelevant for this sector, the article aims to assess potential impacts of ISO 9000 accreditation upon the performance of small tourism enterprises (STEs). Limited research within this area encouraged the use of primary research techniques for collecting the relevant data. Due to an insufficient number of STEs fulfilling the sampling criteria, a case study approach was adopted with Westons Cider constituting its subject. The research revealed that ISO 9000 significantly contributed to the improved performance of this company. The benefits and advantages of the ISO 9000 system depend, however, on the age of the system and are subject to a company’s conformance to critical success factors. The study also uncovered that the usefulness of ISO 9000 needs to be assessed against the particular situation of an individual company rather than against the sector to which a company belongs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the influence of developer experience between human resource management (HRM) practices and innovation in software (S/W) engineering. This study uses motivation theory and investigates how HRM practices influence the innovative behaviors of S/W developers by using a mediator of affective developer experience.

Design/methodology/approach

For this, this study used a survey of S/W developers working in Korea. Out of 431 responses collected from 35 companies, 352 responses from 34 companies were usable for analysis and takes structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results show that developmental appraisal, externally or internally equitable reward and comprehensive training increase their affective developer experience affecting innovative behaviors positively in turn. However, selective staffing has no effect.

Originality/value

The results show that S/W developers pursue individual growth rather than success in their organizations. The findings show the context of S/W engineering in Korea and provide universalistic perspective when top managers motivate their S/W engineers by HRM system.

本研究擬探討開發經驗會如何影響人力資源管理方法與軟件工程創新之間的關聯。具體來說,本研究以動機理論,並利用情感的開發經驗作為中介者,去探討人力資源管理方法會如何影響軟件開發人員的創新行為。

研究人員調查於韓國工作的軟件開發者; 他們收集來自35間公司共431個回應,其中來自34間公司共352個回應可用來分析; 分析以結構方程模型進行。

研究結果

研究結果顯示,發展評估、 外在或內在的公平獎勵和綜合培訓,均能增加情感的開發經驗,繼而反過來會正面地影響創新行為; 唯選擇性人員配置則沒有作用。

研究結果顯示軟件開發人員於其機構內所追求的是個人成長,而不是個人成就。研究結果說明了韓國軟件工程有關的情況,而且,若高層管理人員欲以人力資源管理系統激勵其軟件工程師,研究結果為此亦提供了一個普遍性的觀點。

Abstract

Computer simulation is one of several technologies available to improve competitiveness, and simulation is thus often used as a design and/or decision tool in various industries including supply chain systems. The presumed difficult and time‐consuming statistical analysis of simulation data is often avoided while doing simulation studies by supplying deterministic input data to simulation models. This article addresses this issue in order to make managers aware of the risks involved with this practice. Embracing any technology that is new to the organisation requires responsibility. A theoretical comparison of deterministic simulation versus stochastic simulation is conducted and the theoretical results are substantiated with empirical results obtained from a simple logistic simulation model using deterministic input as one alternative and stochastic input as a second alternative.
