Abstract

The authors propose to estimate a varying coefficient panel data model with different smoothing variables and fixed effects using a two-step approach. The pilot step estimates the varying coefficients by a series method. We then use the pilot estimates to perform a one-step backfitting through local linear kernel smoothing, which is shown to be oracle efficient in the sense of being asymptotically equivalent to the estimate knowing the other components of the varying coefficients. In both steps, the authors remove the fixed effects through properly constructed weights. The authors obtain the asymptotic properties of both the pilot and efficient estimators. The Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed estimator performs well. The authors illustrate their applicability by estimating a varying coefficient production frontier using a panel data, without assuming distributions of the efficiency and error terms.

Abstract

In this paper, we study a partially linear dynamic panel data model with fixed effects, where either exogenous or endogenous variables or both enter the linear part, and the lagged-dependent variable together with some other exogenous variables enter the nonparametric part. Two types of estimation methods are proposed for the first-differenced model. One is composed of a semiparametric GMM estimator for the finite-dimensional parameter θ and a local polynomial estimator for the infinite-dimensional parameter m based on the empirical solutions to Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, and the other is a sieve IV estimate of the parametric and nonparametric components jointly. We study the asymptotic properties for these two types of estimates when the number of individuals N tends to and the time period T is fixed. We also propose a specification test for the linearity of the nonparametric component based on a weighted square distance between the parametric estimate under the linear restriction and the semiparametric estimate under the alternative. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the proposed estimators and tests perform well in finite samples. We apply the model to study the relationship between intellectual property right (IPR) protection and economic growth, and find that IPR has a non-linear positive effect on the economic growth rate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe further developments on a novel formulation of the boundary element method (BEM) for inelastic problems using the dual reciprocity method (DRM) but using object-oriented programming (OOP). As the BEM formulation generates a domain integral due to the inelastic stresses, the DRM is employed in a modified form using polyharmonic spline approximating functions with polynomial augmentation. These approximating functions produced accurate results in BEM applications for a range of problems tested, and have been shown to converge linearly as the order of the function increases.

Design/methodology/approach

A programming class named DRMOOP, written in C++ language and based on OOP, was developed in this research. With such programming, general matrix equations can be easily established and applied to different inelastic problems. A vector that accounts for the influence of the inelastic strains on the displacements and boundary forces is obtained.

Findings

The C++ DRMOOP class has been implemented and tested with the BEM formulation applied to classical elastoplastic problem and the results are reported at the end of the paper.

Originality/value

An object-oriented technology and the C++ DRMOOP class applied to elastoplastic problems.

Abstract

Contemporary literature reveals that, to date, the poultry livestock sector has not received sufficient research attention. This particular industry suffers from unstructured supply chain practices, lack of awareness of the implications of the sustainability concept and failure to recycle poultry wastes. The current research thus attempts to develop an integrated supply chain model in the context of poultry industry in Bangladesh. The study considers both sustainability and supply chain issues in order to incorporate them in the poultry supply chain. By placing the forward and reverse supply chains in a single framework, existing problems can be resolved to gain economic, social and environmental benefits, which will be more sustainable than the present practices.

The theoretical underpinning of this research is ‘sustainability’ and the ‘supply chain processes’ in order to examine possible improvements in the poultry production process along with waste management. The research adopts the positivist paradigm and ‘design science’ methods with the support of system dynamics (SD) and the case study methods. Initially, a mental model is developed followed by the causal loop diagram based on in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and observation techniques. The causal model helps to understand the linkages between the associated variables for each issue. Finally, the causal loop diagram is transformed into a stock and flow (quantitative) model, which is a prerequisite for SD-based simulation modelling. A decision support system (DSS) is then developed to analyse the complex decision-making process along the supply chains.

The findings reveal that integration of the supply chain can bring economic, social and environmental sustainability along with a structured production process. It is also observed that the poultry industry can apply the model outcomes in the real-life practices with minor adjustments. This present research has both theoretical and practical implications. The proposed model’s unique characteristics in mitigating the existing problems are supported by the sustainability and supply chain theories. As for practical implications, the poultry industry in Bangladesh can follow the proposed supply chain structure (as par the research model) and test various policies via simulation prior to its application. Positive outcomes of the simulation study may provide enough confidence to implement the desired changes within the industry and their supply chain networks.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a three-axis attitude tracking control law to solve the attitude maneuver of a flexible satellite in the presence of parameter uncertainties and external disturbance.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the relative dynamic equation where the relative attitude is described by quaternion, a robust control law composed of a proportional derivative (PD) part plus a signum function is designed and only requires the measurement of attitude and angular velocity. Furthermore, the stability analysis of the proposed control law is given through a two-step proof technique.

Findings

Numerical simulation results demonstrate that fine convergence of the attitude and angular velocity error and low-level vibration of flexible appendages are obtained by the proposed controllers.

Practical implications

The controller with the structure of a PD term plus a switching function about a sliding variable has low computational complexity and does not need to measure the modal variables of elastic appendages, so it can be used in orbit without modification.

Originality/value

The globally asymptotic stability of the controller in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances is proven rigorously through a two-step proof technique.

Abstract

A fundamental change in the planning and delivery of new housing projects has taken place in the last years, with the focus shifting towards adding value to projects based on a better understanding of housing preferences. This issue becomes even more critical when it is intended to the provision of affordable houses for low and middle income groups. This paper describes a model designed to help developers and housing users to achieve their expectations regarding quality, affordability and including also reasonable profits. Developed through a “methodological pluralism”, this study identifies people-oriented variables and assumptions. The model was developed based on a case study in the city of Guayaquil-Ecuador, and information obtained from field work research was used to test it. The study examines implications and limitations of the model for inclusion of housing preferences considering local conditions and cultural values. The different parts of the model along with data requirements for each part are described. The paper concludes with findings regarding the identification of most preferred attributes by housing users and the use of alternatives methods to incorporate additional value into projects, translated into more appealing profits for developers and the provision of better and more affordable houses for users.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deal with profit maximization problem of two-layer supply chain (SC) under fuzzy stochastic demand having finite mean and unknown variance. Buyback policy is employed from the retailer to supplier. The profit of the supplier solely depends on the order size of the retailers. However, the loss of shortage items is related to loss of profit and goodwill dependent. The authors develop the profit function separately for both the retailer and supplier, first, for a decentralized system and, second, joining them, the authors get a centralized system (CS) of decision making, in which one is giving more profit to both of them. The problem is solved analytically first, then the authors fuzzify the model and solve by fuzzy Hausdorff distance method.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical models are formed for both centralized and decentralized systems under non-cooperative and cooperative environment with suitable constraints. A significant assumption on density function, namely Cauchy-type density function, is introduced for demand rate because of its wider range of the retailers’ satisfactions. Fuzzy Hausdorff metric is incorporated within the fuzzy components of the fuzzy sets itself. Using this method, the authors find out closure values of both centralized and decentralized policies, which is an essential part of any cooperative and non-cooperative two-layer SC models. Moreover, the authors take care of the profit values with corresponding ambiguities for both the systems explicitly.

Findings

It is found that the centralize policy of SC could only be able to maximize the profit of both the retailers and suppliers. All analytical results are illustrated numerically along with sensitivity analysis and side by side comparative studies between Hausdorff and Euclidean distance measure are done exclusively.

Research limitations/implications

The main focus of attention of the proposed model is given to usefulness of Hausdorff distance. Unlike other distances, Hausdorff distance can take special care on the similarity measures of different fuzzy sets. Researchers have been engaged to use Hausdorff distance on the different fuzzy sets but, in this study, the authors have used it within the components of a same fuzzy set to gain more closure values than other methods.

Originality/value

The use of this Hausdorff distance approach is totally new as per literature survey suggested yet. However, the Cauchy-type density function has not been introduced anywhere in SC management problems by modern researchers still now. In crisp model, the sensitivity on goodwill measures really provides a special attention also.

Abstract

Challenge-based learning (CBL) is a didactic technique that aims to increase the knowledge and skills development of higher education students. The different situations that humanity faces make educational models evolve and adapt to reality and force faculty to be increasingly prepared and open to face current problems. The Tecnológico de Monterrey, the highest ranked private university in Mexico and the 155th in the world (QS World University Rankings, 2021), has implemented the Tec21 Educational Model based on four fundamental pillars: (1) CBL; (2) flexibility; (3) inspiring faculty; and (4) integrated and memorable education experiences. In this chapter, we describe the experience of implementing this education model. Our conclusions so far are that students acquire more knowledge in CBL classes than in face-to-face classes; however, faculty require an adequate training program, and there must be a prior design of the competency assessment instruments. Testing of various assessment instruments found that checklists and rubrics are the most accepted, appropriate, objective, and transparent in CBL courses, based on faculty and students' surveys. Finally, in the opinion of employers, students educated with CBL as a didactic technique have greater acceptance in the working world.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find the solution for special cases of regular-long wave equations with fractional order using q-homotopy analysis transform method (q-HATM).

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed technique (q-HATM) is the graceful amalgamations of Laplace transform technique with q-homotopy analysis scheme and fractional derivative defined with Atangana-Baleanu (AB) operator.

Findings

The fixed point hypothesis considered to demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of the obtained solution for the proposed fractional-order model. To illustrate and validate the efficiency of the future technique, the authors analysed the projected nonlinear equations in terms of fractional order. Moreover, the physical behaviour of the obtained solution has been captured in terms of plots for diverse fractional order.

Originality/value
