Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this chapter is to survey and synthesis the literature on: (1) myths and misinformation about persons with disabilities that create attitudinal barriers to employment, (2) best practices in employing persons with disabilities, (3) the business case for hiring persons with disabilities and (4) corporate social responsibility and disability, in order to distill a model for changing corporate culture for successfully integrating employees with disabilities into an organizations workforce.

Methodology/approach

An extensive review of the above mentioned literature is synthesized and distilled into a model.

Findings

The review indicates a number of best practices to be implemented in order to successfully integrate employees with disabilities into the workforce. These factors have been synthesized into a model to guide employers in affecting corporate cultural change to address the integration of person with disabilities into the organization.

Practical implications

A systematic approach to integration of employees with disabilities, informed by the significant business logic for doing so.

Originality/value

The chapter provides an extensive survey of the literature on disability employment and highlights attitudinal barriers to employing persons with disabilities, the business case and social responsibility case for employing persons with disabilities, the best practices for success and synthesizes these factors into an original model to guide business in cultural change making.

Describes the philosophy and process underpinning a skills development programme which is an integral part of the Professional Management Foundation Programme for part‐time students of the Institute of Personnel Management. Abstract

The majority stockholders are not the same as parent company stockholders in a consolidated entity when one or more subsidiaries own parent company’s shares. In this milieu, the allocation of income could be performed: a) among majority and minority stockholders; b) among parent company stockholders and minority stockholders. Considering minority interest as a component of the consolidated equity, this paper demonstrates how the criterion used to allocate income can influence on the consolidated financial statements and, thereby, analysis based these financial statements.

Abstract

Purpose

Education is the most promising and prominent domain for entrepreneurs who are willing to infuse innovation and creation to initiate the change in existing educational practices. These changing agents are known as edupreneurs. Educational domain generates an opportunity for women entrepreneurs to balance work and life, both. However, women edupreneurs community needs to enhance their competencies and capacities to handle diverse issues and challenges posed by stakeholders. This paper aims to explore competencies helpful in designing a customized leadership development program, especially for women edupreneurs community.

Design/methodology/approach

From the extensive literature, a number of competencies for women's edupreneurs were found and 12 competencies were selected in this study after experts’ opinions. These competencies were analyzed by an integrated analytical hierarchy process (AHP)-TOPSIS approach.

Findings

The study has extracted competencies (visionary, delegative, inquisitive, learning agility, cognitive ability, self-reflection, tolerance, decisive, self-development, receptive to feedback, building partnership networks and save face) to be included in leadership development program specially designed for women edupreneurs community engage in operating child care, pre-school, primary-elementary schools and secondary-high schools, addressing the problems and issues related to students and parents community.

Practical implications

Future leadership development programs designed for women edupreneurs can include these competencies and trainers, educators and policymakers can follow the suggested structure for execution purpose.

Originality/value

This study is an initial attempt to set a benchmark for improving competencies of women edupreneurs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how organizational structure (i.e. centralized hierarchical vs decentralized egalitarian decision-making) can color leadership evaluations of equivalently positioned men and women independent of their actual leadership style. This study addresses three questions: Are men’s leadership abilities, in terms of competence, dominance and interpersonal skills, evaluated more positively than women when they lead a hierarchical company? Are men and women’s leadership abilities evaluated similarly when they lead an egalitarian company? Do organizational outcomes change these effects?

Design/methodology/approach

The research performs an eight-condition online vignette experiment on American community college students.

Findings

The findings suggest that organizational structure and outcomes influence how male versus female leaders are perceived. When leading a hierarchical company, male leaders not only gain more in perceived leadership ability when their company succeeds but are also less likely to lose legitimacy when their company fails. When leading successful egalitarian organizations, men and women’s leadership skills are thought to gain similar legitimacy, but when an egalitarian organization fails, perceptions of female leaders’ competence, status dominance and interpersonal skills drop more than those of men.

Research limitations/implications

This study’s generalizablity is limited given the sample of participants and the context of the industry utilized in the vignette.

Practical implications

This study suggests that women’s promotion into leadership can be impeded by the decision-making structure of the organizations they lead independent of their individual choice in management style. Women leaders face not only disadvantaged evaluations of their leadership abilities in hierarchical organizations but are also not unilaterally advantaged in egalitarian organizations.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the need to theoretically examine how organizational structures fundamentally embed gender stereotypes.

Satisfying target markets is a major strategic purpose of all organisations. Logistics management, however, often encounters difficulty in serving individual customer groups. The target market or market segment is the building block of corporate strategy, the focus of both marketing and logistics efforts. Marketing focuses narrowly on specific sets of customers who respond in a similar way to the marketing mix. Logistics strategy, on the other hand, stresses the integration of material and product flow through the organisation as a single unit. The common bond lies in meeting the needs of these groups.
