Abstract
Not many weeks back, according to newspaper reports, three members of the library staff of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies in London were dismissed. All had refused to carry out issue desk duty. All, according to the newspaper account, were members of ASTMS. None, according to the Library Association yearbook, was a member of the appropriate professional organisation for librarians in Great Britain.

Abstract
We explore the effect of selective schooling, where students are assigned to different schools by ability, on adult health, well-being and labour market outcomes. We exploit the 1960s transition from a selective to a non-selective secondary schooling system in England and Wales. The introductio3n of mixed-ability schools decreased average school quality and peer ability for high-ability pupils, while it increased them for low-ability pupils. We therefore distinguish between two treatment effects: that of high-quality school attendance for high-ability pupils and that of lower-quality school attendance for low-ability pupils, with mixed-ability schools as the alternative. We address selection bias by balancing individual pre-treatment characteristics via entropy balancing, followed by ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. Selective schooling does not affect long-term health and well-being, while it marginally raises hourly wages, compared to a mixed-ability system, and school aspirations for high-ability pupils. Cognitive and non-cognitive abilities measured prior to secondary school are significantly and positively associated with all adult outcomes.

Abstract
In both decorative and industrial applications of gold plating, but even more critically in the latter, accurate measurement of coating thickness is of vital importance to both the manufacturer and the user. To the former, working to increasingly stringent specifications, it may, in extreme cases, mean the difference between profit and loss if an excessive thickness is inadvertently applied due to some change in electrolyte or processing conditions, or if an unduly high average thickness must be used on barrel or vat plated components to ensure a minimum requirement on functional areas. To the user, it can equally mean the difference between operational success and failure of a gold plated part if plating thickness is below specification and the means used for measurement are not sufficiently precise to detect this. Control of coating thickness in gold plating is therefore a matter of vital concern, and never more so than at the present time when, in the face of the spectacular price increases of recent years, and in the virtual absence of viable alternatives to meet the exacting demands of applications in printed circuitry, semiconductor technology and the electronics industry in general, the need for maximum economy in gold usage has become increasingly urgent, as evidenced by the vigorous efforts currently devoted to the development and improvement of selective plating techniques, and the recent interest manifest in the possible replacement of essentially pure gold coatings by alloy deposits of 18 carat and lower where these may be technically acceptable. The present article offers a wide‐ranging survey of methods available for thickness measurement, with particular reference to gold plating, but including also some techniques which, whilst not finding current use, may be of potential interest in this context. This is the second and final part of this article, the first having appeared in Volume 1, Number 1, October (1974).

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to test the influence of branded premiums or branded free gifts (e.g. a free of charge suitcase of a well-recognised brand) on tourism destination promotion. Specifically, the impact of brand name and price value of a branded premium on promoting a tourism destination was examined.
Design/methodology/approach
This research uses two experiment-based studies, applying a between-group experimental design.
Findings
The results revealed that appreciation leads to intention to visit the promoted destination when the branded promotion is offered. When a destination promotional offer contains a branded premium, consumers respond more favourably to the brand name of the premium than the price value of the premium. This finding applies to consumers’ responses to both the destination and the premium.
Research limitations/implications
This research adds to the body of knowledge on tourism destination promotion and the branding literature, specifically with promotional and branded premiums.
Practical implications
Mutual benefits can be obtained by both tourism destination marketers and premium marketers.
Originality/value
This research highlights the importance of branded premiums in tourism destination promotional offers. This research also shows the influence of the price value of a premium’s brand name in a tourism destination promotional offer.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the differences in quality of life (QoL) between two groups of pediatric sickle cell patients: those who used hydroxyurea and those who chose not to use the medication to treat sickle cell disease.
Design/methodology/approach
The study was a quantitative, non-randomized, cross-sectional, comparative study. In total, 100 children ages seven to 17 participated in the study. Parents of the patients completed a demographic questionnaire while the participants completed the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (Peds QoL) and Sickle Cell Disease Quality of Life Inventory (SCD QoL).
Findings
The Ped QoL regression analysis revealed that hydroxyurea use and parental marital status accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in Ped QoL. The SCD QoL regression analysis also revealed that hydroxyurea and age accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in SCD QoL. Finally, the regression analysis revealed that SCD, parental marital status, parental income, sex, age, race and number of siblings did not account for a significant proportion of the variance in SCD crises per year.
Originality/value
This paper proved a need to study the differences in QoL between those pediatric patients who used hydroxyurea and those who did not use the medication.

Abstract
Purpose
Timely access to effective treatment is a primary goal for mental health services; however, when demand exceeds available resources, services may place clients on a waitlist or restrict services. This paper aims to identify approaches used by mental health services to manage service demand and waitlists.
Design/methodology/approach
A review of research literature between 2009 and 2019 was conducted using the Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Embase and Cochrane databases. Articles were screened and assessed against inclusion criteria and the methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool.
Findings
In total, 20 articles were located that met the inclusion criteria. Five demand management approaches were identified, namely, walk-in models, triage processes, multi-disciplinary care, patient-led approaches and service delivery changes.
Research limitations/implications
This review identifies effective approaches that services can consider adapting to their local setting; however, further research is needed to demonstrate the clinical effectiveness of services provided under these models.
Originality/value
This review makes a valuable contribution to mental health care service delivery by detailing the strategies that services have adopted to manage demand and, where available, comparative outcomes with traditional service delivery models.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study the tribocorrosion and the surface repassivation behaviors of Monel 400 alloy in artificial seawater.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, the tribocorrosion behavior of Monel 400 alloy was studied under different applied loads in artificial seawater by using a pin-on-disk tribometer equipped with an electrochemical workstation. The applied loads were selected ranging from 50 to 200 N. The surface repassivation behavior of Monel 400 alloy was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
Findings
It was demonstrated that mass loss was determined by the combined effect of mechanical wear and chemical corrosion. The surface repassivation mechanism of the alloy is that layer corrosion product film formed on the surface of Monel 400 alloy, which can protect metal matrix from future corrosion.
Originality/value
This research adds original content in revealing the tribocorrosion and surface repassivation behaviors of Monel 400 alloy under different loads, which offer a theoretical basis for the application under the corrosion and wear environment of Monel 400.
