Abstract
SCIENTISTS and sociologists have for some time been gravely disquieted about the impact which modern technology is making upon society; a disquiet which has recently been percolating through wider sections of all communities. Man has always recognized, since the first machine usurped the place of the human hand as the tool of production, that progress does good but brings harm in its wake, although it is not as quickly appreciated.

Abstract
ONE effect of sharing a common language with America is the imposition of a surfeit of books on matters like work study, in which our own literature is modest indeed. The almost simultaneous publication of two books with a common subject is therefore very unusual. They both deal with work measurement, one in forty‐seven chapters and the other in fifteen. Since books are not judged by a quantitative standard this is no guide to their respective merits.

Abstract
MODERN man can reach any part of this planet within thirty‐six hours. The people who inhabit it speak around two thousand languages. That is a measure of the difficulty in making human contacts. It makes the Tower of Babel seem like a kindergarten. In view of this, instead of bemoaning that the world has progressed so little, we should marvel that it has progressed so much.

A conference can range from good to bad. It can be well or poorly organized, comfortably or indifferently housed, a profitable or wasted use of time. If conferences were rated like hotels and stars indicated their merit, the one held in Munich at the end of October should be awarded the maximum number.

Abstract
This paper discusses integrated logistics in a two‐level repair‐inventory system of a transport corporation where there is one central depot and twenty subordinate depots which cater to the needs of the population in a metropolitan city in India. An expensive, recoverable spare (engine) is considered with (S — 1, S) inventory policy. It is reported that the present location of the central facility is not optimal. The advantages possible by optimally locating this central facility are highlighted with results. The impact of increasing the maintenance effectiveness on the optimum spare stock level and the total system cost are discussed.

Abstract
Makes a timely assessment of the specifically British contribution in the field of marketing models, which provides a useful basis for further development. Reviews UK writing on models of market behaviour, advertising models, distribution models, pricing models and new‐product models. Makes a distinction between macro‐ and micro‐models: a macro‐model does not require information about individual units in the market, such as households: micro‐models need data about individual units, therefore require much more information. Concludes that the findings give valuable insight into consumer purchasing patterns – providing early prediction of future success or failure.

ORGANIZATIONS operating in a city which earned the phrase ‘Shipshape and Bristol fashion’ have a formidable reputation to maintain. So much is expected of them. One at least need have no fears on those grounds if a first visit to its Annual Conference is typical of previous ones. It is the Department of Work Study and Staff Training of the Engineering Employers' West of England Association.
