Abstract

The analysis of multi‐stage distribution has been carried out along three dimensions, depending on the characteristics of the particular problem. These are location, transportation and inventory and while simple problems can be successfully solved using any one of the three approaches, it is fair to say that the analysis of a complex distribution system has been limited by computer storage and the time required by the search and optimising procedures. In this paper we develop a simple inventory‐type model and test it on a small set of data. The results are encouraging and the model can easily be extended to handle a more realistic size of problem.

Abstract

A systems perspective of waste management allows an integrated approach not only to the five basic functional elements of waste management itself (generation, reduction, collection, recycling, disposal), but to the problems arising at the interfaces with the management of energy, nature conservation, environmental protection, economic factors like unemployment and productivity, etc. This monograph separately describes present practices and the problems to be solved in each of the functional areas of waste management and at the important interfaces. Strategies for more efficient control are then proposed from a systems perspective. Systematic and objective means of solving problems become possible leading to optimal management and a positive contribution to economic development, not least through resource conservation. India is the particular context within which waste generation and management are discussed. In considering waste disposal techniques, special attention is given to sewage and radioactive wastes.

Abstract

The location of economic facilities has existed as a problem for some considerable time, yet its emergence as an integral part of total distribution planning seems quite recent. The development of techniques to solve particular, well defined problems has resulted in a wide range of algorithms, heuristics and simulation programs. Several of these are “packaged” by consulting organisations and indeed are quite successful in solving that part of the problem which can be represented in the required format. The role of location in the concept of total distribution is, however, rather more complex. For this reason, it is instructive to examine the progress of locational analysis from its origins in analytical geometry through the work of the economic geographers to the current emphasis on the systems approach to distribution. It is then possible to investigate how the historical development of the problem has influenced the decision‐making process, and to what extent this influence is now desirable.

Abstract

Purpose

The textile industry contributes 2 and 3% to the global and Indian Gross Domestic Product (GDP), respectively. India supplies a quarter of global cotton yarn. Yet, most yarn manufacturing companies use outdated methods and lack organisational skills and strategies. Improvement in processes in India could significantly help the industry worldwide.

Design/methodology/approach

The variables that influence the performance of the system were identified. Their interrelationships and impact were identified from the employees in the chosen case study, a yarn manufacturing industry. A System Dynamics (SD) approach was employed to study the benefits of implementing 5S lean strategies. The impact of each variable on various performance measures such as throughput, Work In Progress, processing time, waiting time, idle time, over-processing and scraps was analysed.

Findings

Improvement in outcomes reflected an enhanced adoption of leanness in the industry. The decision-makers can utilise this study to optimise the necessary parameters in the system and attain the desired productivity levels. Better resource management and reduced processing time helped increase the despatch rate by 9.735% and decrease the WIP by 23.01%. Time management helped to reduce the inventory, idle time and waiting time. Over-processing, defects and scraps were minimised, indicating a shift towards lean.

Research limitations/implications

This study pioneers the use of SD simulation models for optimising yarn manufacturing using lean strategies. Improvement in performance measures by integrating these strategies opens avenues for future research using multiple approaches to address a problem.

Practical implications

Implementing 5S lean principles and simulations enhances productivity, reduces waste and optimises resource management for the yarn manufacturing industry. Decision-makers can employ simulation to witness the outcomes of their changes without investing cost and time and without associated implementation risks.

Originality/value

The use of a simulation model to witness the benefits of incorporating lean strategies in yarn production has not been explored. This approach could help the managers and policymakers understand their existing system's shortcomings and critical areas that require improvement.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on a framework developed by Kovács and Spens, this paper seeks to assess the use of the three different research approaches in logistics research; discuss the use of different research methods within the three research approaches; find and discuss applications of the abductive research approach to logistics problems.

Design/methodology/approach

Content analysis is used in order to categorize the different research approaches. While content analysis commonly uses smaller units such as paragraphs, sentences, words or characters, this study used entire articles as the unit of analysis. The scope of the review encompassed five years (1998‐2002) of articles in IJLM, IJPDLM and JBL. A total of 378 articles was reviewed and categorized.

Findings

The findings of the study corroborate earlier studies regarding the main research approach used in logistics. Published logistics research is hypothetico‐deductive, with a strong emphasis on using survey methods. Nevertheless, inductive as well as abductive research is gaining importance. However, most logistics articles do not explicitly discuss the research process, nor the approach used. Therefore, a call for more explicit statements of the research approach is suggested.

Research limitations/implications

The review of the articles is limited to three main journals in the field. A more comprehensive view of research approaches could be obtained by broadening the review to include also other types of research.

Practical implications

The paper provides a framework and guidelines to researchers for explicitly discussing the research approach used in logistics articles.

Originality/value

The paper provides an overview of the research approaches used in logistics research.

Abstract

Continual rising fuel costs and rapidly increasing vehicle costs have generated management awareness of the costs incurred in physical distribution. Inevitably, management attention on the distribution function is drawn towards potential cost savings and increases in efficiency. Where transport costs represent a significant part of the total distibution costs, then one area which determines the efficiency of all others is the vehicle routing and scheduling activity which could collectively be known as load planning.

Abstract

Internet banking is now such a well‐established fact in the most developed countries that it is possible to map its actual role in customer relations. Inspired by the resource‐based view of the firm and based on a recent empirical study in the banking industry in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, this paper traces important antecedents of Internet banking adoption and analyses its impact on relationship‐marketing performance. Based on structural equation modeling, the findings offer some support for the view that the more advanced Internet applications adopted and the more attractive the Web site, the more the banks are able to keep profitable customers. However, the results question whether it pays to be a first‐mover and organizational factors related to market orientation and customer‐relationship management seem to have a much stronger impact on customer‐related performance.

Abstract

Many retail chains allow stock transfers to take place between branches. Considers the special case where one branch, out of stock of a particular line, faced with a customer wanting that specific product and unable to obtain it (in a sufficiently short period of time) through the normal distribution channels, obtains it from another branch in the chain. Argues that this process can be managed and controlled more effectively than is often the case at present, particularly if branch access is made available to central databases.

Abstract

This article describes an investigation into the factors affecting load and vehicle sizes for road delivery of oil products. An overall framework of analysis was developed, a sampling method was used, and potential cost savings identified and achieved. The ability to construct an analytical framework of sufficient accuracy depended on a reasonably convincing costing formula for part loads, which is also described.
