Abstract

The literature on charismatic leadership in organizations has neglected the organizational context in which such leadership is embedded. The purpose of this article is to enrich and refine charismatic leadership theory by linking it to its organizational context. We argue that while charismatic leadership principles and processes potentially apply across a wide variety of situations, the emergence and effectiveness of such leadership may be facilitated by some contexts and inhibited by others. We develop and present a series of propositions linking contextual variable to the emergence and effectiveness of charismatic leadership. Among the contextual variable we examine are the organizational environment, life-cycle stage, technology, tasks, goals, structure, and culture, as well as the leader’s level in the organization and the circumstances surrounding his or her appointment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the comparative strengths and weaknesses of leading third‐party logistics providers (3PLs) in the USA with respect to their financial efficiencies during the period of 2005‐2007. It also intends to identify various factors that significantly affect the financial efficiency of the 3PLs over time and propose ways to improve the competitiveness of 3PLs.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes data envelopment analysis to measure the financial efficiency of 12 leading 3PLs in the USA, relative to their key competitors. In particular, this paper develops the Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes (CCR) model that is designed to derive weights without being fixed in advance. It also employes the Banker, Charnes, and Cooper (BCC) model to mitigate the impact of 3PL sizes on the 3PLs' financial efficiency.

Findings

The rapid expansion of the business scope can undermine the financial efficiency of 3PLs due to huge start‐up investments. In particular, business expansion through mergers and acquisitions can hurt the financial efficiency of 3PLs due to restructuring and re‐branding costs. The non‐asset based 3PLs have the less financial burden than their asset‐based counterparts due to their limited investment in assets. But, the asset‐based 3PLs such as J.B. Hunt can still overcome such a burden by streamlining their logistics services and focusing on their niche areas.

Research limitations/implications

This paper primarily uses financial measures as the major output. Thus, it can be extended to include some non‐financial measures. Owing to the difficulty in finding some secondary data sources about the 3PL industry, only 12 leading 3PLs are compared to each other with respect to their relative financial efficiency.

Practical implications

This paper provides several practical guidelines as to how 3PLs can cope with increasing competition, cost pressures, and changing business environments and what the future holds for the maturing 3PL industry.

Originality/value

This paper reveals the current weaknesses of the leading 3PLs and identifies challenges and opportunities for the 3PL market in the USA. In addition, it helps 3PLs formulate the future survival and growth strategies by providing the detailed picture of where they stand in terms of competitiveness. In so doing, this paper identifies important sources of 3PLs' financial inefficiencies, while uncovering the secret behind the improvement of their financial efficiencies.

Abstract

This article examines top level management leadership and its impact on organisational excellence. An organisational life cycle model of leadership is developed which posits that top level leadership requirements differ across different stages of an organisation's life cycle. Such requirements are expanded to include not only those with subordinates but those with external stakeholders. We argue that top managers operate from leadership scripts and utilise judgemental heuristics which tend to drive their leader behaviour and make it difficult to change in order to meet the differing life cycle requirements. A number of strategies that can be used to change these scripts and judgemental heuristics as required are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

In an era of downsizing and financial cutbacks, the operational efficiency of third party logistics providers (3PLs) dictates their competitiveness and/or survival. In an effort to help 3PLs enhance productivity and price leverage in the increasingly competitive third party logistics market, this paper aims to develop a meaningful set of financial benchmarks that will dictate best practices. In particular, the paper proposes a data envelopment analysis (DEA) that is proven to be useful for measuring the operational efficiency of various profit or non‐profit organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the examples of major 3PLs in the USA, this paper is the first to illustrate the usefulness of DEA for measuring the competitiveness of third party logistics services. The proposed DEA model also helps 3PLs identify potential sources of inefficiency and provide useful hindsight for the continuous improvement of operational efficiency. Furthermore, the proposed DEA model not only helps 3PLs establish detailed policy guidelines in prioritizing the use of financial resources, but also helps them evaluate the effects of financial investment on the profitability of 3PLs.

Findings

DEA study finds that the strength of 3PL service performances and the breadth of diverse 3PL services is somewhat correlated to the long‐term financial strength of 3PLs.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this paper includes the novel application of DEA to the performance measurement of 3PLS. The proposed DEA model not only helps 3PLS establish detailed policy guidelines in prioritizing the use of financial resources, but also helps them evaluate the effects of financial investment on the profitability of 3PLS.

Abstract

Purpose

Strategic cost structure choices determine how firms divide operating costs between fixed and variable components, and therefore have important implications for financial performance. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of operating leverage on equity Betas when managers have discretion over firms' cost structures.

Design/methodology/approach

Using panel data for publicly listed trucking firms over years 1994‐2006, market model Betas are regressed on controls and alternatively measured proxies for operating leverage: degree of operating leverage, assets in place and percentage of company employed drivers.

Findings

Results of this study generally show positively significant coefficients on all three operating leverage variables.

Originality/value

Operating characteristics of many industries require that firms make substantial investments in long‐lived assets that result in high fixed costs (e.g. depreciation), and for these firms cost structure is exogenously or technologically constrained leaving managers with little discretion. In contrast to these types of firms, the authors examine the effect of operating leverage (OL) on Betas when managers have discretion over firms' cost structures. Trucking firms are a particularly interesting industry group for analyzing the impact of operating OL choices on Beta because distinct strategic cost structure choices are available to the management of trucking firms that result in various degrees of OL throughout the industry.

Abstract

Articulation of a vision is commonly held to be a critical component of theories of outstanding leadership – both transformational and charismatic leadership. Although there is reason to suspect that vision contributes to leader performance, less is known about the nature and origin of viable visions. In the present chapter, we argue that leaders’ visions can be viewed as a prescriptive mental model reflecting beliefs about the optimal functioning of an organization. To test this proposition, outstanding leaders possessing two contrasting types of prescriptive mental models were identified: ideologues whose models stress the maintenance of extant standards and charismatics whose models stress adaptive change. These two types of prescriptive mental models were associated with distinct patterns of leader behavior in a sample of notable historic leaders. The implications of these findings are discussed with respect to current theories of outstanding leadership.

Abstract

The article addresses the relationship between social distance and charismatic leadership. Current theories of charismatic leadership in organizations have borrowed ideas from the literature on socially distant charismatic leaders and applied them to leadership situations that involve direct contacts between leaders and their immediate subordinates. This article argues that while social distance is not a necessary condition for charismatic leadership, there are fundamental differences between distant charismatic leadership and close charismatic leadership. The article attempts to identify these differences through a theoretical analysis of the two leadership situations and through an exploratory content analysis of interviews about close and distant charismatic leaders.

Abstract

The empirical literature on charismatic or transformational leadership demonstrates that such leadership has profound effects on followers. However, while several versions of charismatic leadership theory predict such effects, none of them explains the process by which these effects are achieved. In this paper we seek to advance leadership theory by addressing this fundamental problem. We offer a self-concept based motivational theory to explain the process by which charismatic leader behaviors cause profound transformational effects on followers. The theory presents the argument that charismatic leadership has its effects by strongly engaging followers’ self-concepts in the interest of the mission articulated by the leader. We derive from this theory testable propositions about (a) the behavior of charismatic leaders and their effects on followers, (b) the role of followers’ values and orientations in the charismatic relationship, and (c) some of the organizational conditions that favor the emergence and effectiveness of charismatic leaders.
