Abstract

There is significant amount of literature tackling different issues related to the port industry. The present chapter focuses on a single business unit of seaports aiming at the documentation of works related to container terminals.

An effort to review, collect and present the majority of the works present in the last 30 years, between 1980 and 2010, has been made in order to picture the problems dealt and methods used by the authors in the specific research field. To facilitate the reader, studies have been grouped under five categories of addressed problems (productivity and competitiveness, yard and equipment utilization, equipment scheduling, berth planning, loading/unloading) and four modelling methodologies (mathematics and operations research, management and economics, simulation, stochastic modelling).

The analysis shows that most works focus on productivity and competitiveness issues followed by yard and equipment utilisation and equipment scheduling. In reference to the methodologies used managerial and economic approaches lead, followed by mathematics and operations research.

In reference to future research, two fields have been identified where there is scope of significant contribution by the academic community: container terminal security and container terminal supply chain integration.

The present chapter provides the framework for researchers in the field of port container terminals to picture the so far works in this research area and enables the identification of gaps at both research question and methodology level for further research.

Abstract

Purpose

Congestion as a consequence of the rapidly growing air traffic is one of the outstanding problems of the air transportation industry. Traffic impediment rates, having an increasing acceleration while the airport capacities have been kept constant due to several reasons, cause problems such as arrival/departure delays, schedule interruptions, cancellations and customer dissatisfaction. In this paper, the author aims to study transitioning from a single-hub air transportation system to a multi-hub infrastructure via Monte Carlo simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

The current hub has reached its capacity limits for long so that the growth potential of the air transportation has been affected adversely. One of the possible remedies suggested by authorities, professionals and academics was to transform the air transportation infrastructure into a multi-hub setting. Current air traffic of the country was modeled by means of simulation. Airport capacities and performances are simulated and analyzed under different scenarios considering a potential alternative hub along with the central one. Possible delays in both hubs are studied in case of moderately increasing traffic congestion.

Findings

As a result, decreased delay levels in the central hub are observed, whereas no delays are experienced in the potential one in all the scenarios.

Originality/value

This study, proposing to organize the national and international air traffic of the country while harmonizing the delay rates and increasing the passenger satisfaction, is to contribute significantly to the aviation sector companies, airliners and airport operators by shedding light on the imminent capacity issues air transportation industry is going to face.

Abstract

Presents a framework for distribution companies to establish and improve their logistics systems continuously. Recently, much attention has been given to automation in services, the use of new information technology and the integration of the supply chain. Discusses these areas, which have great potential to increase logistics productivity and provide customers with high level service. The exploration of each area is enriched with Taiwanese logistics management practices and experiences. Includes a case study of one prominent food processor and retailer in Taiwan in order to demonstrate the pragmatic operations of the integrated logistics management system. Also, a survey of 45 Taiwanese retailers was conducted to investigate the extent of logistics management in Taiwan. Concludes by suggesting how distribution companies can overcome noticeable logistics management barriers, build store automation systems, and follow the key steps to logistics success.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the first automated container terminal (ACT) was introduced at Europe Container Terminals Delta Terminal in Port Rotterdam back in the year 1992, a lot of research had been done to improve the management of ACT. However, up until recently, the number of literature available still appeared scarce. Hence, this paper aims to review the collection of literature about ACT to generate an exhaustive summary to answer the formulated review question in this study.

Design/methodology/approach

Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses to narrow down the search parameters of literature retrieved so that only relevant articles were only selected. The systematic literature reviews were applied to analyse the content of the articles retrieved to determine its journal ranking, research findings and timeline of publications.

Findings

The adoption of ACT technology by container terminal operators could increase the terminal efficiency in productivity, cost reduction and environmental sustainability. Owing to global environmental awareness, the research trend of container terminal field and container terminal operator in the terminal design is much more environmentally friendly oriented.

Research limitations/implications

The limited numbers of experts in the management of ACT are causing challenges in data collections.

Practical implications

The analysis of the global ACT trend could help academicians and industrial investors to review the revolution timeline of maritime technology in port and shipping that is happening rapidly.

Originality/value

The analysis of timeline and collective literature leads to the propose of the conceptual framework to determine the relationship between increased productivity, cost reduction and environmentally sustainable.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the benefits of the turning point layout; a simulation model being applicable for strategic level is designed that compares systems with and without turning points. Specifically, the avoidance of deadlocks and prevention of conflicts is substantial.

Design/methodology/approach

Optimization process for different layouts and configuration of autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) are worked out using statistical methods for design parameters. Regression analysis is used to find effective design parameters and analysis of variance is applied for adjusting critical factors. Also, the optimal design is then implemented in a manufacturing system for an industrial automation and the results are reported.

Findings

The outputs imply the effectiveness of the proposed approach for real industrial cases. This research will combine both simulation-based method and optimization technique to improve the quality of solutions.

Originality/value

In AGV systems, the begin-end combinations are usually connected by using a fixed layout, which is not the optimal path. The capability of these configurations is limited and often the conflict of multiple AGVs and deadlock are inevitable. By appearing more flexible layouts and advanced technology, the positioning and dispatching of AGVs increased. A new concept would be to determine each path dynamically. This would use the free paths for AGVs leading to overcome the conflicts and deadlocks.

Abstract

Introduces the concept of service‐oriented agile logistics and presents a generic apparatus for the design of such systems. An analysis of future communication‐based logistics leads to the logistic control and engineering system SERVICES. The logistic system is conceived as a “society” of interacting “self‐responsible intelligent service‐producing actors”, where services or functions are taken as the system‐base. This means that, instead of working with process‐modules, the development of a service‐oriented information‐system primarily works with service‐modules that program the operational interaction between client, service‐producer and possibly sub‐contracted service‐producers. From this the supporting execution‐control in the context of the service‐producing units can be deduced. A case study of a high‐performance deep‐sea container terminal is given. This shows that the function‐programming system of SERVICES is generic, adequate and effective and that it favours distributed control.
