Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to compare well‐known technologies of sludge utilization on the basis of energy and economical balances of real processes. The calculations are based on pilot tests in the Central Waste Water Treatment Plant (CWWTP) in Prague, the biggest waste water treatment plant in the Czech Republic.
Design/methodology/approach
A key issue for the comparison of mass and energy flow of sludge management is the attainable level of sludge dewaterability. Results of dewatering of anaerobic digested sludge are available from real applications since most sewage plants use digesters. The existing limited knowledge about mixed raw sludge (MRS) dewaterability have driven authors to make pilot tests targeted to establishment of an attainable level of MRS dewaterability. To get as close results as possible even anaerobic stabilized sludge was dewatered and various other data were collected to obtain a comprehensive data set for energy balance of the sludge management calculation. The pilot tests took place at CWWTP in 2005. Measured data were used to calculate energy balance of a number of different sludge managements.
Findings
To produce self‐reliant combusting sludge, a dry matter content of 35‐45 per cent for MRS and 45‐55 per cent for digested sludge has to be achieved by means of dewatering and potentially drying. In recent measurements at CWWTP a dry matter content of about 33 per cent was achieved by dewatering of MRS. This value is very close to the range of the dry matter content at which a self reliant combustion can be expected.
Practical implications
This comparison together with investment cost analysis should be one of the most important parameters in case of design a new or revamp an old waste water treatment plant.
Originality/value
The paper provides results from pilot tests at CWWTP together with three different energy balances comparison.

Abstract
Recent years have seen an increasing emphasis placed upon the development of transferable skills within PhD degree programmes. This paper reports on steps taken to evaluate a programme of transferable skills development at a research intensive university in the UK, focussing on the views of late stage PhD students in the science, engineering and medical disciplines. It shows that most students report a positive impact from having taken part in transferable skills initiatives and that they have a positive attitude towards them. Participants report an enduring positive impact on their behaviour and consider that the training meets their perceived needs as they progress as researchers. However, amongst the population as a whole, there were differences in views. For example, it was found that females, overseas students and those mainly motivated to do the PhD by career‐related reasons attach the greatest importance to such opportunities to develop transferable skills.

Abstract
This article reports the development, application and results of a baseline investigation of contract research staff in 2007 in the Medical School at the University of Sheffield which was carried out in order to develop a specifically tailored training and career development programme and allow for future impact evaluation of the scheme. Postdoctoral researchers reported on their perceived skill levels, academic achievements, career motivations and the current research environment. Results indicated that transferable skills related to communication and awareness of the process of research (i.e. the process of acquisition of funding, commercialisation of research outputs) were lacking. Furthermore, these skills were associated with higher publication outputs, and improved with mobility between institutions at postdoctoral level. This paper also describes how the findings from the baseline evaluation were used to develop a programme to address the lower ranking skills and evaluate the impact of the programme.

Abstract
Purpose
Freight transportation practices accounted for a significant share of environmental degradation and climate change over the years. Therefore, environmentally responsible transport practices (ERTPs) become a serious concern of freight shippers and transport service providers. Past studies generally ignored the assessment of ERTPs of freight transport companies during a transport service contract. To bridge the above literature gap, this paper proposed a hierarchical framework for evaluating freight transport companies based on ERTPs.
Design/methodology/approach
In a data-driven decision-making environment, transport firm selection is affected by multiple expert inputs, lack of information availability, decision-making ambiguity and background of experts. The evaluation of such decisions requires a multi-criteria decision-making method under a group decision-making approach. This paper used a data-driven method based on the intuitionistic fuzzy-set-based analytic hierarchy process (IF-AHP) and VIseKriterijumska Kompromisno Rangiranje (IF-VIKOR) method. The applicability of the proposed framework is validated with the Indian freight transport industry.
Findings
The result analysis shows that environmental knowledge sharing among freight transport actors, quality of organizations human resource, collaborative green awareness training programs, promoting environmental awareness program for employees and compliance of government transport emission law and practice have been ranked top five ERTPs which significantly contribute to the environmental sustainability of freight transport industry. The proposed framework also ranked freight transport companies based on ERTPs.
Research limitations/implications
This research is expected to provide a reference to develop ERTPs in the emerging economies freight transport industry and contribute to the development of a sustainable freight transport system.
Originality/value
This study assesses the environmental responsibility of the freight transportation industry. The emerging economies logistics planners can use proposed framework for assessing the performance of freight transportation companies based on ERTPs.

Purpose
Nowadays, the sustainability of healthcare services is of increasing importance. In particular, hospitals have ceased to be only treatment-oriented institutions and have begun to operate on the principles of sustainability in their environmental, economic and social dimensions. In this context, a comprehensive method is required to evaluate and improve the performance of hospitals.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, it is recommended to combine D-DEMATEL (D number theory and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory methods) and objectives matrix (OMAX) methods, which are two important methods in determining hospital performance. D-DEMATEL is a technique used to analyze complex relationships and interactions that reduces subjective judgments because it is based on the opinions of many decision-makers and can be applied even in cases of incomplete information. OMAX, on the other hand, provides a comprehensive framework for measuring performance and allows different performance indicators to be evaluated together.
Findings
The novel performance assessment model is applied to a hospital in real life. Its performance value, according to 36 determined performance indicators, is calculated at 56.91%. The indicators of the hospital that need improvement are defined by the traffic light system method. The performance indicator importance ranking of D-DEMATEL is compared to the ranking obtained by the fuzzy DEMATEL method.
Originality/value
Important indicators to be used in later sustainable hospital performance evaluation studies were determined. Also, an integrated D-DEMATEL and OMAX method for evaluating sustainable hospital performance is presented.

Abstract
Purpose
In this review paper, the authors are particularly interested in the growth in the scholarly investigation of the efficacy of developmental interventions for doctoral and early career researchers. This paper aims to provide a “State of the Art” overview of the emerging fields of research and suggest areas that command more research.
Design/methodology/approach
A foundation of key disseminations relating to the new discipline has become established, and it is the outputs of these that the authors look to first in their review. However, much of the work is reported in the proceedings of two specific conferences, known to the authors and does not appear in database searches, which results in a concentration of research in two specific countries, namely, the UK and Australia. Relatively little is found from database searches, however approached, but the authors also report on this work.
Findings
There is a general gap in the depth of the body of work in all areas of literature relating to research on the practice of developing researchers. We have identified specific areas as the most limited in terms of the body of published research including research governance; work life balance; engagement influence and impact training and creativity and innovation training.
Research limitations/implications
There is much work as yet unpublished and the practice of rigorous study and publication is not yet generally embedded in this research discipline.
Practical implications
Without the depth of rigorous and robust findings of research to provide us with evidence of good practice, the emergent discipline will struggle to have integrity in its practice. Continued growth in research in this emergent discipline is essential.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first review of its kind looking at the published research in respect of the development of researchers.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a case study‐based evaluation of a newly accredited career exploration and development module for researchers. It assesses the value of the pilot module in terms of how it succeeded in stimulating career thinking and “work wisdom” in researchers. Career destinations data suggest that fewer than 50 per cent of researchers will establish careers in academia or higher education; it is therefore notable that 73 per cent of respondents to the postgraduate research experience survey expected to pursue a research career in higher education. Given that researchers' expectations conflict somewhat with the reality of potential career directions, the need for a career development programme that allows them to explore career possibilities within and without academia seems relevant. The module examined was delivered through a mixture of taught and interactive workshops (examined in this article), structured reflective journaling, online peer‐sharing discussions and group driven action learning.
Design/methodology/approach
A practitioner research, case study, approach was employed, with the intention of informing practice and delivery.
Findings
The paper presents evidence of positive qualitative outcomes for the researcher participants, and of a successful learning intervention.
Originality/value
The paper describes an accredited programme incorporating action learning. It is unusual since much career training for researchers within universities is ad hoc and unaccredited.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the use of a framework and planner for researcher development introduced into the United Kingdom in 2010 by Vitae: an organisation whose purpose is to support the development of UK researchers.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative and quantitative data from two cohorts participating in an accredited researcher development course designed and delivered by the Centre for Academic Practice and Learning Enhancement at the University of Strathclyde were analysed.
Findings
Participants reported that the Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF) personal development planner (PDP) was useful in facilitating career development. Most found it relatively easy to use once initial perceptions of the tool as being overly detailed and complex were overcome. In addition, some technical problems with the software were identified. There was great variation in the manner in which the RDF was used (for instance in the number of descriptors selected). Although use was highly individualised, the full range of descriptors was used between the course participants.
Practical implications
The results suggest that the RDF PD planner has great potential in supporting researcher development, provided certain specified conditions are met – in particular the need to ensure individualisation, support, and researcher ownership of the outcomes. Further evaluation is necessary.
Originality/value
This is the first report on the RDF PDP being used in a researcher development course.

Abstract
Purpose
It is of great importance for economy policy makers to comprehend the relationship between macroeconomic indicators and domestic savings, and to find out which indicator is more determinative on the dynamics of domestic savings. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the degree of relationship between Turkey’s domestic savings and selected macroeconomic indicators.
Design/methodology/approach
To examine the relationship, grey relational analysis (GRA) is applied together with the entropy method to determine the weight of the indicators according to the information level they provide. The analysis covers the data of the period from 1990 to 2014. In practice, however, the data set is used by dividing into two separate periods including before and after the 2001 crisis.
Findings
The results indicate that the unemployment rate and the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita growth stand out with a relatively high degree of relationship for the period before 2001. When examining the post-2001 period, current balance ratio and GDP growth are ascertained as indicators which have a high degree of relationship with domestic savings.
Practical implications
These indicators have different aspects affecting both public and private savings. Therefore, it may be beneficial to concentrate on these indicators when designing a policy in order to increase the domestic saving rate.
Originality/value
There are many econometric models used for investigating Turkey’s macroeconomic indicators and domestic savings causality. But before now, any study which investigates relationship between macroeconomic indicators and domestic savings by GRA could not be encountered. Using one of the newest developed theories (the grey systems theory) for this subject is the significance of this research.

Abstract
Manganese naphthenate has been utilized to improve the combustion properties of kerosine and to reduce soot content of flue gases. It is also applicable as a corrosion inhibitor in gas turbine engines using naphtha as a fuel, and can be added to fuel of these engines to minimise corrosion at high temperature and filter blocking tendency, and to modify the type of deposit formed on turbine blades so that it is less adherent and softer, especially when cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl is used as a smoke reducer. The manganese naphthenate soap has been utilized to inhibit wear in low speed marine diesel engines operating on vanadium‐containing residual‐type fuel oils, and it can be employed to reduce the ignition temperature of soot in furnaces, by as much as 200%, facilitating oxidative soot removal from, especially, oil‐fired furnaces. The addition of the product to heavy tractor oil can reduce sulpher trioxide concentration. Manganese naphthenate has been used as a catalyst to the manufacture of organo‐boran compounds for use in petrol and lubricants.
