Abstract
The formulation of electromagnetic field problems using dual and complementary energy methods is now well established, and the advantages of the error bounds to system energy for static systems that it provides are widely realized. When considering eddy‐current problems the picture is less clear, even for the restricted case of time harmonic fields. Several interesting papers have been published that address the particular question of whether or not error bounds can exist for such dissipative systems, but as yet no consensus view has emerged. This contribution is an attempt to help clarify the position. It will be shown that through the use of complementary variational principles it is possible to establish pairs of functionals that do indeed rigourously provide error bounds. Ilustrative examples show that it is usually possible to provide error bounds to eddy‐current system parameters so long as due care is taken to pre‐determine whether or not a particular problem may be regarded as either current driven, or voltage driven, from the circuit point of view.

Abstract
Today, firm performance must be measured not only on traditional metrics but also on those that reflect the changing imperatives and new metric knowledge. Thus, the focus of managers, investors, and researchers is shifting from rubrics like sales and profitability to growth as a more appropriate measure of firm performance. We aim to highlight the effects that growth of a firm can have on the level of its systematic risk. Using a sample of 203 firms across nine industries taken from the Indian manufacturing sector for a period of 17 years (1998–2014), we develop and test a panel vector autoregressive (VAR) model to analyze the causal relationship between growth aspects and systematic risk of firms. Results depict that a growth option available to firms increase their level of systematic risk and the risk decreases when firms start chasing this growth by increasing their assets in place. Sustainable growth rate, which depicts the growth potential of firms, plays an important role in reducing the level of systematic risk. The findings of this chapter are relevant to managers who think that growth is always beneficial.

Abstract
OWING to the comparatively early date in the year of the Library Association Conference, this number of THE LIBRARY WORLD is published so that it may be in the hands of our readers before it begins. The official programme is not in the hands of members at the time we write, but the circumstances are such this year that delay has been inevitable. We have dwelt already on the good fortune we enjoy in going to the beautiful West‐Country Spa. At this time of year it is at its best, and, if the weather is more genial than this weather‐chequered year gives us reason to expect, the Conference should be memorable on that account alone. The Conference has always been the focus of library friendships, and this idea, now that the Association is so large, should be developed. To be a member is to be one of a freemasonry of librarians, pledged to help and forward the work of one another. It is not in the conference rooms alone, where we listen, not always completely awake, to papers not always eloquent or cleverly read, that we gain most, although no one would discount these; it is in the hotels and boarding houses and restaurants, over dinner tables and in the easy chairs of the lounges, that we draw out really useful business information. In short, shop is the subject‐matter of conference conversation, and only misanthropic curmudgeons think otherwise.

Abstract
Two variational formulations of the three‐dimensional eddy‐current problem are discussed and compared. One is based on the use of h (the magnetic field) and the associated magnetic potential as unknowns the other one is based on the use of a primitive of the electric field. They are found to be quite similar, suggesting some “duality” and, perhaps more importantly, that “mixed” finite elements, which were found efficient for the first case, could also be used for the second. This could alleviate some problems with the so‐called “modified vector potential approach” to the 3‐D eddy‐current problem.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore how online adjunct higher education faculty members perceive the role of using social media sites as instructional approaches. A purposeful sampling was used, and adjunct online higher education faculty members were invited to participate. An adjunct faculty member was defined as a person who taught part-time higher education courses; therefore, the faculty member was not hired as a full-time faculty member.
Design/methodology/approach
Qualitative researchers explore phenomena examining the lived experiences and participants behaviors; in this study, online adjunct instructors’ perceptions on classroom instructional social media online approaches were examined. Participants in this study were trained to teach higher education online courses and these teachers were the experts on the topic. The design for this study was an exploratory case study in which the participants were online adjunct instructors who taught at online higher education institutions in the Northeast. The case study approach was the most appropriate. The focus was the external events participants’ lives.
Findings
Three themes emerged from the analysis of the in-depth interview process. Based on the adjunct online higher education instructors’ perception on the use of social media teaching approaches in the classroom, the themes that emerged were uniformity of purpose vs personal beliefs need for justification importance student engagement and facilitation vs direct instruction. Themes reflected online teaching approaches higher education institutional missions and student learning and engagement outcomes.
Research limitations/implications
In this study, adjuncts’ perceptions expressed and themes found may not be characteristic of other adjunct instructors’ views. In qualitative studies, participants are asked open-ended interview questions, which may have been a limitation for this study. Quantitative questions, such as the impact of using social media as an instructional approach, were not asked. In this study, adjunct online higher education instructors were invited to share their views on the study topic. Additionally, qualitative researchers are limited by the data collection method and the data analysis process. Therefore, researchers who would like to repeat this study on adjunct online higher education teachers’ perspectives may be unable to duplicate the research.
Practical implications
The significance of this study is the need for a renewed global initiative in higher education to promote the use of social media training for online adjunct faculty members. Online higher education faculty members’ reflections on using social media tend to be recorded from a personal rather than a professional point of view.
Social implications
The implication for online higher education leaders is to review mission statements and reevaluate how the use of social media may impact student learning outcomes, student career readiness and student engagement opportunities.
Originality/value
The need for a renewed global initiative in higher education to promote the use of social media training for online adjunct faculty evolved as the significance of the study. Because inclusion requirements and workshop training for the use of social media in online higher education classrooms vary among higher education institutions, online adjunct faculty social media classroom practices and perceptions widely vary.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective is the application of vibration analysis for the detection and diagnosis of low isolation between the stator coil wind and the voltage phase unbalance in induction motors with different numbers of poles. The purpose of this paper is to provide an approach for maintenance engineers for diagnosis electrical fault through the vibration analyses.
Design/methodology/approach
A detailed review of previous work carried out by some researchers and maintenance engineers in the area of machine fault detection is performed. By vibration analysis, the spectra were collected, which used to analyze the failure. Vibration spectra could detect particular characteristic for each fault in an initial condition, so the machine health can be preserved.
Findings
Results show the efficiency of the technique of vibration analysis and their relevance to detect and diagnose faults in different induction motors. In this way, it may be included in future predictive maintenance programs.
Practical implications
The paper presents a laboratory investigation carried out through an experimental set-up for the study of fault, mainly related to the stator winding inter-turn short circuit and voltage phase unbalance.
Originality/value
The main contribution of the paper has been the characterization of one more tool that makes the predictive maintenance process more efficient, effective and faster, increasing the reliability and availability of equipment.

Abstract
The choice of accounting policies by a company has implications for the market’s understanding of corporate performance. Whilst the critical areas of choice may change over time with new developments and changes in standards, the underlying issue remains relevant. This paper examines the effect of accounting techniques upon the relationship between accounting variables and UK share prices.

Abstract
This study examines the ability of fundamental summary measure Pr to predict earnings change for the subsequent year, the association of Pr and stock returns, and the relationship between Pr and risk factors beta and size. Pr is a probability index generated by logistic model and financial statement data. Beta effect is minimized by grouping firms into beta portfolios while size is controlled through incorporating size as an independent variable in the regression models. Evidence from the study indicates that Pr has a strong ability to predict future earnings change and has a positive and significant association with adjusted market returns, after controlling for beta. Pr's association with adjusted market returns is mitigated when beta and size are controlled simultaneously.

Abstract
Purpose
The Securities Exchange Commission mandated eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) filing data provide immediate availability and easy accessibility for both academics and practitioners. To be useful, this data should provide information for decisions, specifically, investment decisions. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the XBRL database can be used with models, developed in previous studies, predicting the directional movement of earnings. The study does not attempt to examine the validity of these models, but only the ability to use the data in the analysis of financial statements based on these models.
Design/methodology/approach
The study analyzes New York Stock Exchange companies’ XBRL data using a two-step logistic regression model. The model is then used to arrive at the directional movement of earnings between current and subsequent quarters. Additional models are created by dividing the sample into industry membership.
Findings
The results classified companies as realizing an increase or a decrease in earnings. The final model indicated a significant ability to predict earnings changes, on average about 65 per cent of the time, for the entire model, and 71 per cent, for the industry-based models (higher than those of previous studies based on COMPUSTAT). The investment strategy created average quarterly return between 2.8 and 10.7 per cent.
Originality/value
The originality of this study is in the way it examines the quality of XBRL data, by examining whether findings from prior research which relied on traditional databases (such as COMPUSTAT) still hold using XBRL data. The use of XBRL allows not only easier and less-costly access to the data but also the ability to adjust the models almost immediately as current information is posted, thus providing a much more relevant tool for investors, especially small investors.

This paper seeks to investigate whether disaggregated bank earnings better predict next period earnings than contemporaneous aggregated earnings.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to investigate whether disaggregated bank earnings better predict next period earnings than contemporaneous aggregated earnings.
Design/methodology/approach
Fairfield et al.'s (1996) regression approach is used for predicting next period's return of equity (ROE) and stock prices using disaggregated earnings data.
Findings
The results show that the mean adjusted R‐square significantly increases with the progressive disaggregation of earnings. The results also demonstrate that disaggregated components are better able to predict next period earnings and stock prices than aggregated earnings.
Research limitations/implications
The findings support the US Financial Accounting Standard Board's contention that disaggregated information may be more useful than aggregated information for investment, credit, and financing decisions.
Practical implications
Investors and analysts should use disaggregated income statement information in predicting next period earnings and stock prices for the banking industry.
Originality/value
The main contribution of this paper is to demonstrate how fully disaggregated earnings explain ROE, stock prices, and analysts forecast error in the banking industry.
