Abstract

Modifications of physical and electrical properties of the vertical double‐diffused metal oxide semiconductor (VDMOS) transistor are observed on using the device under some conditions of “functional” stress. This paper presents the characterization and the 2D simulation for the pre‐ and post‐stressed device, to point out the degraded parameters due to the functional stress, and to analyze their effects on the degradation of the VDMOS static and dynamic characteristics.

Abstract

This article shows that irradiation with neutrons can be used as solution to harden commercial (COTS: Commercial‐Off‐The‐Shelf) n‐channel power MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) devices against destructive events induced by heavy ion irradiation. Atomic displacements created in silicon, by neutron irradiations, result in traps and recombination centers which reduce the electron‐hole pairs density generated by the heavy ion within the device. These results highlight a strong reduction in the photo‐current generated by the heavy ion, correlated with a reduction of the carrier lifetime.

Abstract

Using the case study of Hans Renold Ltd, examines a particular form of entrepreneurial activity, namely the introduction of new management techniques. This company was chosen for study because it has long been accepted as having been the first company in Britain to introduce scientific management along Taylorist lines. The paper specifically examines the roles of Hans Renold and his son, Charles, in the adoption of the new management techniques. Utilising the detailed archives of the company, we find evidence to suggest that both were important, though in different ways, and in doing so we throw light on the development of management practice within an important pioneering company, on the specific problems faced, and how they were overcome.

Abstract

WE have to announce with deep regret the death of Mr. I. Chalkley Gould, founder and director of the Library World since its establishment in 1898. Mr. Gould was a member of an old Essex family associated with Loughton and its neighbourhood, and was born in 1844, his father being the late George Gould, of Traps Hill House, Loughton. His connection with the firm of Marlborough, Gould & Co. and other stationery and printing concerns led him many years ago to give some attention to library and museum work, towards which he had always been attracted because of his personal interest in archaeology and literature. In this way he became associated with many museums, libraries and antiquarian societies, and identified himself more particularly with the movement for the preservation of ancient British earthworks. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, vice‐president of the Essex Archaeological Society, the Essex Field Club, and the British Archaeological Association. Within recent years he acted as hon. secretary of the Committee for Recording Ancient Earthworks and Fortified Enclosures—a committee for the formation of which he was largely responsible and in the work of which he took a very deep interest. He was chairman of the Committee for the Exploration of the Red Hills of Essex—an important undertaking which is not yet completed. He also contributed several valuable papers to the Victoria History of Essex, and assisted the editor of that publication in revising the earthworks sections of other counties.

This Society, originally known as “The National Pure Food Association,” has been reconstituted under the above title. The objects of the Society are to assist as far as possible in checking the widespread evils of food adulteration, for this purpose to bring about a public realisation of the admittedly serious character of food frauds, and, under expert advice, to co‐operate with constituted authority in effecting their repression. The policy of the Society is directed by a representative Council, and, the Society being thus established on an authoritative basis, cannot fail to become a powerful and valuable organisation if adequately and generously supported by the public. Of course the predominating subject in British librarianship in the past month was the Manchester Meeting. It was the largest gathering in our recollection, and those who were fortunate enough to attend lived some crowded hours of glorious life. The arrangements showed that the most careful and painstaking labour had gone to their making. The Local Committee and the various librarians in Manchester and the district deserve all possible gratitude, and the Library Association has every reason to congratulate itself upon a conference which ran without fault and which received great and wide publicity.

Abstract

Previous research and logic indicate that capital markets generally value spending for advertising and promotion; however, empirical results from these studies are far from consistent. While most studies find a positive relationship between a firm's advertising spending and its market value (Hirschey, 1985; Jose, Nichols and Stevens, 1986; Lustgarten and Thomadakis, 1987;Morck, Shleifer and Vishny, 1988; and Morck and Yeung, 1991), others find a negative relationship when control variables are added to the empirical model (Erickson and Jacobson, 1992). Differences in model specification may explain these conflicting results. Previous studies have included a variety of control variables such as return on investment, market share, research and development (R&D) spending, and book value (Erickson and Jacobson, 1992; Chauvin and Hirschey, 1993; Hirschey, 1982) when testing the relationship between promotional expenses and market value. Different firm characteristics (e.g. sales, total assets, book value of equity and price) have been selected as scalers for empirical measures of both the dependent and independent variables. Although these studies investigated an essentially identical theoretical relationship, variation in model specifications renders interpretations different.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to investigate how recordkeepers in Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Iceland and Italy experienced accomplishing their tasks from home over varying lengths of time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

A multilingual survey including 44 questions was designed and administered to the six countries identified above in 2022. This research was preceded by an environmental scan looking at existing studies considering archival and records management responses to the pandemic.

Findings

The impact of working from home on recordkeeping and, more generally, work performance was perceived differently by the survey respondents depending on various factors. The study also identified a number of similarities across countries, such as an increased awareness of the importance of records management shared by organizational actors. Surprisingly, the pandemic did not appear to have a great impact on the perceived quality of records management.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study aiming to capture records professionals’ perceptions of their role while working from home during the pandemic.

Abstract

The Food Bill has emerged from the Grand Committee on Trade, and will shortly be submitted, as amended, to the House of Commons. Whatever further amendments may be introduced, the Bill, when passed into law, will but afford one more example of the impotence of repressive legislation in regard to the production and distribution of adulterated and inferior products. We do not say that the making of such laws and their enforcement are not of the highest importance in the interests of the community; their administration—feeble and inadequate as it must necessarily be—produces a valuable deterrent effect, and tends to educate public opinion and to improve commercial morality. But we say that by the very nature of those laws their working can result only in the exposure of a small portion of that which is bad without affording any indications as to that which is good, and that it is by the Control System alone that the problem can be solved. This fact has been recognised abroad, and is rapidly being recognised here. The system of Permanent Analytical Control was under discussion at the International Congress of Applied Chemistry, held at Brussels in 1894, and at the International Congress of Hygiene at Budapest in 1895, and the facts and explanations put forward have resulted in the introduction of the system into various countries. The establishment of this system in any country must be regarded as the most practical and effective method of ensuring the supply of good and genuine articles, and affords the only means through which public confidence can be ensured.
