Abstract
The use of andragogy and action learning as a basis for trainer development in a university setting is discussed. The authors discuss limitations of traditional teacher‐led ways of learning and the contrasting assumptions of modern adult learning methods. They go on to describe the rationale, design, implementation and outcomes of a programme designed on such methods.

Abstract
This paper investigates the cultural influences (ethnic and organisational) on management decision making. Using Michael Kirton’s Adaptors and Innovators (1987) as a model, research was undertaken in Hong Kong with four groups of managers. The groups represented the permutations of expatriate and local managers in the private and public sectors. A comparison of national cultures prefaces the research methodology and the instrument used. Assumptions of culturally induced performance and sector styles were examined, producing some interesting results. The findings have implications for the selection and development of managers in multicultural or Chinese environments. Finally, an area for future research is how training can be used to enable managers to switch consciously between a range of problem‐solving and decision‐making styles.

Abstract
The Annual Dinner of the Institute of Petroleum at Grosvenor House last month, again presented the welcome opportunity for so many members and friends to get together and discuss matters of mutual interest, both before, during and after the dinner. More than 700 attended this year and the gathering included some very distinguished people amongst the President's Guests, and also amongst the members and their friends. The principal guest was Vice‐Admiral Earl Mountbatten of Burma, K.G., P.C., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., G.C.V.O., K.C.B., D.S.O., who proposed the toast of “The Petroleum Industry”.

Abstract
The article discusses the design, implementation, outcomes and possibilities of a professional trainers′ postgraduate development programme offered by the University of East Asia and leading to the University of Manchester′s Diploma in Training and Development. Participants are guided through a learner‐centred process in which they select their own learning goals and evaluate their own learning experience. Learning outcomes were traced through observation, interviews and follow‐up discussions and participants were asked to give feedback, anonymously, after completion of the programme. While participants saw the value of this manner of learning and their achievements were encouraging, their learning preference was basically teacher‐centred and so the action learning approach met with some resistance.

Abstract
Two sophisticated production control systems installed at the Sony television tube manufacturing plant in Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan, have achieved major improvements in production monitoring and control. Designed by the Sony industrial engineering department in close collaboration with the IMO systems design group, both production control systems utilize fully the programming versatility and easy interfacing of programmable controllers and networking software.
