Findings

In the interview, Colin Mayer outlines a number of practical recommendations for corporate reform that will align the interests of the corporation with those of society, thus enabling the corporation to become the force for good it has the capacity to be.

Originality/value

According to Colin Mayer, the corporation is no longer acting in the interests of society at large, but solely for the short‐term financial benefit of its shareholders. The lack of long‐term vision and sustainable purpose has given rise to irresponsible practice, resulting in the gradual erosion of public trust.

The purpose of this article is to provide an interview with Mark W. Schaefer

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides an interview with Mark W. Schaefer, author of Return on Influence.

Findings

Mark W. Schaefer is a shining example of what can be achieved through the social web. While he is a marketing consultant of some renown with over 30 years experience, he has also grown a business, been invited to speak at numerous conferences, and attained a lecturing position at Rutgers University, all as a result of his social media activity. He was recently named amongst Forbes magazine's “Power 50” social media influencers, and his blog “{grow}” was ranked in the Power 150 by AdAge magazine. He has written two books on the subject: the first, entitled The Tao of Twitter, offers practical examples of how you can develop a successful Twitter strategy. His most recent book, Return on Influence, looks at the rise of influence marketing, and how companies are attempting to leverage relationships with these celebrities of the social web in order to create brand buzz.

Originality/value

The interview discusses the implications of influencer marketing, on offers tips on how companies can incorporate this into their social media strategy.

This article outlines the key “inflection points” which occur along the SME growth journey, and makes recommendations on how to be prepared to overcome them. It links to a practical tool developed by the author to aid the understanding of where an SME is situated on the growth journey, making it possible to anticipate the inflection points before they occur.

Professor M.S. Rao is a leadership development practitioner with over 30 years' experience. He has written 16 books, including Secrets of Your Leadership Success – The 11 Indispensable E's of a Leader, and Smart Leadership: Lessons for Leaders. In his book Soft Leadership: Make Others Feel More Important, Professor Rao advances his model for soft leadership, blending characteristics of soft skills training with traditional leadership theory. This approach is endorsed by management guru David Ulrich, who provided the foreword for the book. Professor Rao also maintains two popular blogs, http://profmsr.blogspot.com (Where Knowledge is Wealth) and http://professormsraoguru.blogspot.com (Knowledge Grows When Shared).

Originality/value

The paper provides useful information from a leading figure regarding soft leadership.
