Abstract
When in‐plant and college‐based courses are run for supervisors and managers, it is conventional to use a U‐shaped seating arrangement in the training room to promote participation and discussion. However, at each class session, people will tend to sit with the same companions habitually, which may be more comfortable, but less productive than if they sat with different people each time.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to builds upon the hypothesis that “gang” offenders have greater mental health vulnerabilities than both the offender and the general population. This study aims to determine whether there is a difference between the mental health difficulties experienced by young people who may be committing offenses or who may be non-offenders while exploring the interplay of conduct disorder (CD).
Design/methodology/approach
Secondary data analysis was conducted of a cross-sectional survey of 449 young people in two secondary schools and the data was compared to the scores on the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ). A diagnosis of CD was given to the respondents scoring “abnormal” for conduct on the SDQ and the findings were compared to the total difficulties score of those without a diagnosis of CD.
Findings
Those committing offenses both alone and within a group setting had significantly higher scores across all domains of the SDQ, indicating the prevalence of inattention and hyperactivity, emotional problems, lower prosocial behaviors and peer problems over other offending groups. The total difficulties scores on the SDQ were significantly higher for the offending groups that had a diagnosis of CD.
Originality/value
The results suggest that offending patterns are included within the screening for CD subtypes and support the need for further research into tailored interventions that involve multi-agency collaboration. This research offers a new approach to the identification of severe CD with callous and unemotional traits by examining offensive behavior.

Early proselytizing approaches were superseded by an emphasis on quantitative measurement and attempts at “objective” evaluation which involved the development of the generic audit. More recently, the move has been towards locally developed audit and standard setting.

The aim of the study was to further our understanding of the nature of care at home for people with dementia, with particular emphasis on routines, control and care goals. Its objective was to examine the nature of care as a form of social organisation in the home of people with dementia whose care was at least partly provided by relatives or friends. Twenty situations were included in which the carers and people with dementia were interviewed. Each participating pair was observed for an average of nine hours.Findings cover the ways in which carers and people with dementia accomplished personal and household care through routines and exerting control, and how they dealt with aspects like setting and matching care goals. Accomplishing care is shown to be a major challenge for people with dementia and their caregivers, yet in most cases participants developed effective coping strategies. Three themes emerged from the findings: handling competing goals or means to goals, controlling the situation and maintaining a preferred sense of self. This study shows that observational research in the homes of people with dementia is feasible and, when combined with conversational interviewing, is valuable in understanding the processes of caring and what it means to live with dementia. The expertise of carers and care‐receivers in managing home care has been identified. Policies and practices that acknowledge such expertise will go some way towards encouraging and helping people to continue, and rewarding them for the vital part they play.

Annalist rather than analyst, Professor Asa Briggs moves not dogmatically but deliberately through his own Music of Time series, the chronicles of broadcasting. His immense and detailed labours began in the 1950s, the first volume of this serial universe being published in 1961. The fourth, the most substantial to date, covers the period 1945–1955. Like the others it is a model of quite literal documentary history, strong on sources which range from the indispensable basic material—Cmd. 5091, 6852, 6974, 8116, 8416 and other official key papers—down to office memos and even snatches of conversation. The impression is of discreet panelled rooms and policy documents, in‐trays and loaf‐haired secretaries, all the apparatus of a living bureaucracy staffed by impeccable products of the British leadership machine creating a tradition as they go along, leaving behind them an immutable executive procedure as they move onwards, upwards or outwards from the great institution itself. Names now scarcely more than smoke trails in the memory swirl about the pages as once they swirled about the corridors, concocting reports, generating minutes, shaping paragraphs, giving material embodiment to the Corporation.

IN an article in The Economist for February 17th, entitled “Facts about Fiction,” the writer refers to “this useful but unobtrusive social service” (the public libraries) and the unaccustomed limelight in which they were bathed by the Centenary. The adjectives, congenial as they are and, indeed, as is the tone of the whole article, merit further examination; but the main subject discussed is the library which lends books for money profit. It may be that there will never be a condition of affairs in which the supply of fiction—however it is given—will not be called into question. It is, we are convinced, desirable that it should be reviewed from time to time by the public librarian. It is hoped that this number may be a useful instance. The writer, we notice, has memories of libraries which were “jolted” out of the cast‐iron system of the indicator method of issue by the increase of reading between the two wars. We know that this freedom was won before the first world war. The other point that concerns us is the assertion that a general opinion of light reading in public libraries is based on a wrong view. “In even the biggest and most liberally provided public libraries the addict of one class of novel—be it ‘typist‐marries‐boss’ or ‘riding the range’—can only find enough of them to whet his appetite”; he must soon turn to a circulating library. We think it is probable, on reflection, that most librarians would agree.

Cranfield Institute of Technology has strengthened its senior management by appointing Professor Philip Norman to head up the Cranfield campus. Cranfield's recent growth has been dramatic, with the scope of the Institute widening, whilst its strong committment to advanced teaching and applied research in Engineering, Technology, Management and Public Policy has been maintained. The Institute now operates on three campuses, with an embryonic presence at Milton Keynes. It is this increase in the range and complexity of the work of the Institute that has led to Professor Norman's appointment.
