Abstract
A survey of Australian public library Web sites reveals that very few libraries have gone beyond establishing Web sites that provide information about their static library resources and services. Few attempts have been made to deliver a high level of interactive library service to online clients. This paper examines some of the issues that public libraries need to consider in order to rethink the way that the Web can be better used to provide interactive, real time online services. Issues include: commitment of staff and financial resources to online services; developing and maintaining Web technology skills; reclaiming the Web from IT departments; and individual effort versus collaboration.

Abstract
iNet is a collaborative project of the South Australian Public Library Network in partnership with the Council of Library Administrators of South Australia (CLASA) and PLAIN Central Services (PCS). It is a customisable information Web site which consists of a core element of organised links to quality information resources available on the World Wide Web as well as information about each library service in the state. A variety of administrator libraries across South Australia are involved in maintaining, updating and adding links to the site. Maintenance is facilitated via a password protected content management tool which enables administrators to make changes to their allocated subject areas and library content without requiring HTML or other Web programming knowledge or skills.

Abstract
Nobody concerned with political economy can neglect the history of economic doctrines. Structural changes in the economy and society influence economic thinking and, conversely, innovative thought structures and attitudes have almost always forced economic institutions and modes of behaviour to adjust. We learn from the history of economic doctrines how a particular theory emerged and whether, and in which environment, it could take root. We can see how a school evolves out of a common methodological perception and similar techniques of analysis, and how it has to establish itself. The interaction between unresolved problems on the one hand, and the search for better solutions or explanations on the other, leads to a change in paradigma and to the formation of new lines of reasoning. As long as the real world is subject to progress and change scientific search for explanation must out of necessity continue.
In this column, I'd like to deviate from the normal focus on the mechanics of network tools and instead take some time to step back and reflect on the culture of network…

Abstract
This article on Messedaglia might start with Schumpeter's words: “I have chosen him for mention because of the strategic position he holds in the history of Italian economics and statistics”. In fact the Italian history of economics in the nineteenth century is populated by many authors who were rather famous during their lifetime but less and less appreciated later. Generally speaking it can be said, again with Schumpeter, that “the economic research which was done during this period in the various centres of national life … was not on the same level with the achievements of either the earlier times of Beccaria and Verri or the later times of Pantaleoni and Pareto…. And if it is true that “the political and administrative structure of every nation reflects itself in the organisation of its scientific work” (ibid.) the difficulties faced by Italy, trying first to get rid of foreign domination and, secondly, to build national unity, can explain the trouble Italian economists have had in disentangling themselves from foreign influence and in avoiding divisions into regional schools of thought. Angelo Messedaglia is one of the few able to be original and not provincial, as will be shown later; instead, at this point it would seem useful to give a brief account of the historical situation of Italy in the nineteenth century.
