Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the driving forces moving Sakai to join the new era of social applications by adopting a content‐focused methodology.
Design/methodology/approach
The exploration is performed by looking at the way in which the role of content has developed through various phases of the internet, and how educational computing has leveraged those developments. The paper then goes on to relate these developments to the way in which initiatives like OpenSocial are changing the nature of application development and hosting, discussing the impact of the new world of cloud‐aware and cloud‐based applications on the development of Sakai.
Findings
Shifting to a modern web development paradigm that includes heavy use of client‐side programming methodologies such as AJAX, a content‐centric architecture, and an implementation of social networking capabilities will increase student satisfaction, while reducing development time and cost for systems like Sakai.
Originality/value
The paper will be of particular interest to those readers considering the tensions between institutionally provisioned applications and global free‐to‐use web services.

Abstract
DR DONALD URQUHART, Director‐General of the British Library Lending Division, is to receive an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Sheffield on July 20. In a sense, a bar to the medal, since Urquhart already has one doctorate from the same university.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to suggest that holiday libraries have as much design as they have chance.
Design/methodology/approach
Generalizability from experiential anecdote.
Findings
Though ephemeral, such libraries may have items of value and interest, and can have focus and purpose too.
Research limitations/implications
This paper recommends more research based on survey evidence.
Practical implications
Chance collections may nevertheless have items of value, can degrade but also be refreshed and may have a pragmatic role for users.
Social implications
Most users take such collections for granted: a librarian or bibliographer will find them of interest.
Originality/value
This paper is a commentary on an invisible resource.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on the stakeholder theory, this study aims to investigate Chinese entrepreneurial firms’ selective satisfaction of Stakeholder demands on corporate social performance (CSP).
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses the survey data from privately owned companies in China, which is collected by the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce in three years of 2006, 2008 and 2010.
Findings
This paper suggests a contingency model of CSP: entrepreneurial firms selectively perform corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues rather than all CSP dimensions. Furthermore, this study illustrates that international operations, such as overseas exports, would strengthen the above positive relationships between foreign ownership and selected CSR issues.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the understanding of CSR activities in Chinese entrepreneurial firms, which are more selective when performing social issues. In addition to the theoretical contribution, this work suggests a contingency model to the stakeholder theory, indicating the moderating factors to the entrepreneurial firms’ motivation to perform specific social responsibilities.

Abstract
Postcards have been sold by the billions over the past 100 years or so, but you never would recognize their popularity by checking library holdings. Most libraries ignore them, yet a reporter observed at the 1981 national poster and postcard show: “Postcard collection—a nostalgic pastime that has become a consuming passion for thousands of Americans—is more popular today than when picture postcards first caught on at the turn of the century.” Among the dealers of new cards, Kennard Harris says that “in the past five years there has been an explosion of museum postcard publishing and sales in this country.”
