Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comment on Steven Laporte’s review of About and on Behalf of Scriptum Est by Suominen with the aim of clarifying conceptual confusions related to the notion of constitutive and the notion of value-in-itself in the review.

Design/methodology/approach

The notion of constitutive as it appears in the reviewed monograph and Laporte’s reasoning around the notion of value-in-itself as challenges to are discussed and their differences are analyzed.

Findings

The notion of value-in-itself appears problematic as the reviewed monograph already claims. The notion of constitutive provides us with a more plausible foundation for challenging the exclusively instrumentality-based views of the rationality of the practice of the library and librarianship. Compared to the notion of constitutive as used here, the notions used by Laporte remain abstract.

Originality/value

The notion of constitutive could be a key notion opening a perspective for conceiving of the historical, cultural, social, and political conditions of being of the humans as the foundation of the rationality of the library and librarianship.

Abstract

The solder joint reliability of FC components on organic substrates is questionable unless underfill is used to relieve the thermal strains. Besides the mechanical protection, underfill provides the solder and I.C. surface with protection against the environment. Underfilling is however, time‐consuming and expensive. In an electrical sense, the underfill has no beneficial function and should, therefore, be considered as a ballast in an electronic assembly. However, to obtain a satisfactory level of reliability without underfill some novel methods are required. Wafer thinning is often performed to fit a die into a thin package, e.g. in smart cards. In this paper, the issue of thinning a package is studied utilizing 3D finite element method models. Various die and board thicknesses are evaluated with respect to their effect on the reliability of FC solder bumps. In addition, a novel idea to increase the joint reliability is studied.

Abstract

Purpose

Much research into outcomes of doctoral learning focuses on employability, or the dearth of academic employment in relation to doctoral graduate expectations, emphasising precarity of academic future work. This new work begins with and moves beyond employment issues, highlighting professional practice and personal knowledge development and impact.

Design/methodology/approach

Much doctoral education research focuses on the academic identities of postgraduates, their change and alignment to the work and experience of being a doctoral student and beyond, in academic or other jobs. This longitudinal work explores professional and social impact from doctoral research and transformational changes experienced and reported by graduates in two projects. Based on narrative interviewing turned into case studies, it asks fundamental questions about the purpose and impact of postgraduate knowledge.

Findings

Respondents emphasised change in their sense of personal, academic and professional identity; immediate impact on professional practice leading to job change, status, changes in practices and longer-term impacts of further influences on professional practice, some international in reach.

Research limitations/implications

This small-scale study has widespread implications for understanding the impact of postgraduate knowledge on professional practice and personal development.

Practical implications

The work could influence doctoral student intentions and the focus of doctoral programmes.

Social implications

Postgraduate knowledge is seen as crucial in theorised and practical contributions to social development.

Originality/value

This longitudinal work generates new knowledge, answering questions: What is the purpose of postgraduate knowledge? Who benefits from results? What is the impact from the research? How are outcomes put into professional practice? It found significant developments in professional practice and personal development.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the key factors affecting the quality characteristics, such as the number of solder balls, the spread distance of residual underfill and the completion time of the underfilling.

Design/methodology/approach

The Taguchi method is applied to configure the orthogonal table and schedule and execute the experiment. In addition, principal components analysis is used to obtain the points. Then, based on gray relational analysis and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution, the closeness between each quality characteristic and the ideal solution is adopted as the basis for evaluating the quality characteristics.

Findings

The optimal parameter combination is proposed, which includes 4 dispensing (11 mg/dispensing), a “half flow” interval state, 80°C preheating module PCB board and an L-shaped dispensing path and verification testing is performed.

Originality/value

For vehicles and handheld electronic products, solder joints that connect electronic components to printed circuit boards may be cracked due to collision, vibration or falling. Consequently, solder balls are closely surrounded and protected by the underfill to improve joint strength and resist external force factors, such as collision and vibration. This paper addresses the defects caused during the second reflow process of a vehicle electronic communication module after the underfilling process.

Abstract

Flip chip assembly using anisotropic conductive adhesives offers an interesting alternative for making high‐density interconnections. The use of conventional organic printed circuit boards makes this technique even more attractive. However, a low‐cost adhesive flip chip bonding process will require a reduced bonding cycle time or the use of multi‐head joining equipment. Adhesive flip chip bonding is characterized by a long bonding cycle time due to the relatively long curing time of adhesives and the need for simultaneous application of pressure during the curing process. In soldered flip chip techniques, the bonding time per assembly is shorter, because all the chips on the substrate can be soldered in a reflow oven at the same time. In this study, the minimum pre‐curing time needed to make a reliable adhesive joint was determined using one commercial anisotropic conductive adhesive film used on FR‐4 substrates. The results are promising, since bonding time reduction from 40 s to 10 s does not reduce the joint reliability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of chip and substrate thickness on the thermal cycling reliability of flip chip joints assembled with anisotropic conductive adhesives (ACA) on FR‐4 substrates.

Design/methodology/approach

Four test lots were assembled with two substrates and two test chips. The thicknesses of the substrates were 710 and 100 μm and the thicknesses of the chips were 480 and 80 μm. To study the effect of the bonding pressure each test lot contained four test series bonded with four different bonding pressures. The reliability of the test samples was studied using a temperature cycling test.

Findings

The reliability of the test lots varied widely during the test. The test lot with a thin substrate and thin chip demonstrated considerably better reliability than the other test lots. In addition, the test lots had different failure mechanisms. After the test delamination was found in every test lot except the one assembled with the thin chip and the thin substrate.

Originality/value

The work shows that the thermal cycling reliability of ACA flip chip joints can be markedly increased by using thinned chips or reducing the thickness of the substrate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to study the career paths of leaders with a career background as a dentist from basic degree to chief or executive leadership positions and individual factors that influenced their decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interview and a questionnaire were used to study 13 leaders using the structure of Edgar Schein’s career anchor interview and career orientation inventory questionnaire. Theory-driven content analysis was used to analyze the data according to themes which included career paths, factors associated with job and career changes and thoughts about future careers.

Findings

Three different career path types were identified: Progressives (Type A), By chance (Type B), and Enthusiasts (Type C). The main motives were: the Progressives’ goal orientation to proceed to higher leadership positions, the By chance group’s job and even career changing by taking a chance on an interesting possibility that comes their way and the Enthusiasts’ willingness to make a difference and search for possibilities to change things. The most important career anchor was “pure challenge” among the Progressives and By chance groups and “general managerial competence” among the Enthusiasts.

Originality/value

Studies on personal factors associating with career paths in health care are scarce and similarly leaders with a dentist background are less studied, even though leadership could be an excellent career choice for a dentist. Different individuals can have varied motives and career paths toward executive positions. Because of the multi-professional functions in health care, organizations could benefit from having leaders with different expertise backgrounds.

Abstract

Purpose

Individuals often look up to external influencers (leaders) that determine their conduct and form their perception regarding organizational policies and practices which constitute their organizational climate. The importance of organizational climate has been realized off late in various job outcomes among doctors, such as commitment, turnover, etc. Therefore this study aims to investigate the relationship of ethical leadership with organizational climate that may further affect the commitment of doctors in Indian hospitals.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical study has been done in 10 public and private Indian hospitals using a questionnaire survey. Data were collected from a sample of 537 doctors, which were further analyzed statistically using structural equation modeling (SEM) through AMOS and SPSS software.

Findings

The results show a significant influence of ethical leadership on organizational climate and organizational climate further has significant relationship with commitment of doctors in Indian hospitals.

Practical implications

The study has important implication for hospital administration, to identify and place an ethical leadership team at the top, which will further influence the behavior of the followers (doctors). This will further lead to formation of favorable organizational climate fostering commitment in doctors.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies that determines the relationship of ethical leadership with organizational climate and it's further influence on commitment of doctors in large (500 beds and above) public and private hospitals in Indian context.

Abstract

Purpose

This book review aims to draw attention to the often disregarded philosophical foundations of the library. Both the library as an institution and the science that studies its workings, are critically analyzed and put into an epistemological and even ideological perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

The original work by Vesa Suominen is explored in detail and its key findings subjected to criticism.

Findings

The book displays great originality and questions a number of long held beliefs regarding the library. Moving away from the more usual pragmatic and instrumentalist view of the library, the author proposes an approach that values the content of a library independant of its user. This approach, however, raises a number of questions.

Originality/value

Literature on the philosophical aspects of libraries and library science is scarce. Through this review we try to kindle a discussion that involves the basic mission statement of the modern library.

Abstract

Our individual and collective humanness is integral to the pursuit of learning and, thus, has the potential to bring much richness to discussions in teacher education. Unfortunately, education continues to prioritize cognitive ways of knowing, often at the expense of affective and spiritual knowledge. Drawing on the work of Parker Palmer (1993, 1997, 1998a, 1998b, 2004, 2017) who advocates for integrated ways of knowing and being and Manulani Meyer (2013) who draws on Indigenous knowledges to suggest holographic epistemology as meaning-making, I embrace a photo-poetic method to challenge the tendency in education to distance our minds from our emotional and ethereal selves. Situated within a/r/tography, this inquiry explores the capacity of artful ways of being to overcome the culture of disconnectedness in education.
