Abstract

Purpose

The crude oil market plays a key role in addressing the issue of energy economics. This paper aims to detect the causality relationship between the crude oil market and economy based on the financial system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used the static and dynamic Hatemi-J Bootstrap Toda–Yamamoto and Diebold–Yilmaz connectedness index. The Hatemi-J Bootstrap Toda-Yamamoto approach allows researchers to use nonstationary data and that method is robust to nonnormal distribution and heteroscedasticity. The Diebold–Yilmaz connectedness index model provides researchers to detect the power of connectedness besides linkage direction. The analyzed period is the span from January 3, 2005 to October 3, 2022.

Findings

The results show bidirectional causality in the full sample but unidirectional causality before and after the 2008 financial crisis. During the 2008 financial crisis period and the COVID-19 period, there was a bidirectional and unidirectional causality, respectively. The connectedness approach indicates that the crude oil market affects financial stress through investors’ risk preferences.

Research limitations/implications

The Diebold–Yilmaz spillover index model is based on vector autoregression methods with a stationarity precondition. However, some of the five dimensions that constitute the financial stress index (FSI) are nonstationary in level. Therefore, the authors takes the first difference of the nonstationary data.

Practical implications

The linkage between the crude oil market and the FSI provides useful information for investors and policymakers. For instance, this paper indicates that an investor wanted to forecast future value of the crude oil (financial stress) should consider the current and past values of financial stress (crude oil). Moreover, policymaker should consider the crude oil market (FSI) to make a policy proposal for financial system (crude oil market).

Originality/value

Recently, indicators of economic activity levels (economic policy uncertainty, implied volatility index) have begun to be considered to analyze the relationship between energy and the economy but very little is known in the literature about the leading and lagging roles of data in subsample periods and the linkage channel. The other originality of this research is using the new econometric approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at examining the co-movement dependent regime and causality relationships between conventional and Islamic returns for emerging, frontier and developed markets from November 2008 to August 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors used the Markov-switching autoregression (MS–AR) model to capture the regime-switching behavior in the stock market returns. Second, the authors applied the Markov-switching regression and vector autoregression (MS-VAR) models in order to study, respectively, the co-movement and causality relationship between returns of conventional and Islamic indexes across market states.

Findings

Results show the presence of two different regimes for the three studied markets, namely, stability and crisis periods. Also, the authors found evidence of a co-movement relationship between the conventional and Islamic indexes for the three studied markets whatever the regime. For the Granger causality, it is proved only for emerging and developed markets and only during the stability regime. Finally, the authors conclude that Islamic indexes can act as diversifiers, or safe-haven assets are not strongly supported.

Originality/value

This paper is the first study that examines the co-movement and the causal relationship between conventional and Islamic indexes not only across different financial markets' regimes but also during the COVID-19 period. The findings may help investors in making educated decisions about whether or not to add Islamic indexes to their portfolios especially during the recent outbreak.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the first empirical liquidity measurement of China’s agricultural futures markets and study time-varying liquidity dependence across markets.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on both high- and low-frequency trading data of soybean and corn, this paper evaluates short-term liquidity adjustment in Chinese agricultural futures market measured by liquidity benchmark and long-term liquidity development measured by liquidity proxies.

Findings

By constructing comparisons, the authors identify the seminal paper of Fong, Holden and Trzcinka (2017) as the best low-frequency liquidity proxy in China’s agricultural futures market and capture similar historical patterns of the liquidity in soybean and corn markets. The authors further employ Copula-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity models to investigate liquidity dependence between soybean and corn futures markets. Results show that cross-market liquidity dependence tends to be dynamic and asymmetric (in upper versus lower tails). The liquidity dependence becomes stronger when these markets experience negative shocks than positive shocks, indicating a concern on the contagion effect of liquidity risk under negative financial situations.

Originality/value

The findings of this study provide useful information on the dynamic evolution of liquidity pattern and cross-market dependence of fastest-growing agricultural futures in the largest emerging economy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse whether tourism destination competitiveness is associated with human development using contingency tables. Also, by means of a cluster analysis, it seeks to identify homogeneous groups of tourists.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis relies on the Travel and Tourism Development Index and Human Development Index for 2021 and is applied to 81 countries with a high/very high level of human progress and 36 countries with a medium/low level.

Findings

The results show that infrastructure is the tourism dimension that has the greatest influence on human development for all countries, while conditions for doing business and sustainability are relevant to residents’ quality of life only in destinations with a high/very high level of progress. Cluster analysis points to India as a tourist destination that is markedly different from the other countries in its human progress, presenting much higher values for price competitiveness, infrastructure and natural and cultural resources.

Originality/value

It analyses the association between each one of the dimensions of tourism development and the Human Development Index.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop hybrid aluminum metal matrix composite by stir casting process, reinforced with graphite and hard boron carbide particles to enhance the wear resistance. An attempt is made to optimize the wear (weight loss) and coefficient of friction (COF) by considering three factors, i.e. normal load, track diameter and sliding speed which were varied at three different levels.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of graphite and boron carbide on microhardness was studied by adding them in varying percentages. After determining the best combination of hybrid reinforcements, optimization of wear (weight loss) and COF was carried out at various levels of considered factors. Taguchi design of experiments was used using the software “Minitab 16.1”. ANOVA was used to analyze the effect of various parameters on wear and COF. To validate the results, mathematical modeling was carried out in terms of regression equations and results obtained by regression equations.

Findings

The results revealed that the lower weight percentage of graphite (3 per cent) and boron carbide (1 per cent) significantly improved microhardness of developed composites. Results of ANOVA revealed that normal load was the main contributing factor for wear and COF. The results obtained by regression equations and confirmatory tests were within the results obtained by ANOVA.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, very less work has been reported on optimization of wear and COF using hybrid reinforcement particles of graphite and boron carbide.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate experimentally the influence of different surface roughness of the contacting disc on tribological performance of the non-asbestos brake friction material (BFM).

Design/methodology/approach

Taguchi method was applied to design an experiment using three different discs of gray cast iron with different surface roughness, which is measured using optical profilometer. These discs were subjected to sliding against pins prepared with the developed non-asbestos BFM, using pin on disc friction and wear monitor.

Findings

The experimental results shows that the disc 2 (Ra = 3.77 µm) gives wear of 22.78 µm and coefficient of friction of 0.462, which is recommended for extreme brake performance. Analysis of Taguchi design revealed that the disc surface was most significant parameter among the parameters under study.

Practical implications

During braking, continuous sliding between the BFM and brake disc or drum not only results into wear of BFM but also changes the surface finish of the brake drum or disc. This leads to variation in surface topography of the drum or disc surface with application of brakes, which further affects the characteristics of the BFM.

Originality/value

The tribological performance of BFM depends upon the topography of the surface on which it was sliding. To get best performance of the non-asbestos friction materials, disc having moderate surface finish is recommended. Scanning electron microscope micrographs had shown the different plateaus formed and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy spectra identified presence of different chemical elements prior to sliding of the pins surface over different discs surface topography.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate use of calabrian pine (pinus brutia) cone (CPC) dust along with borax (BX) to assess the effect of friction coefficient. Despite the number of research studies completed on the mechanism of friction in automotive brake lining materials, the phenomenon is still not fully understood. Complex mechano-chemical processes occurring on the friction interface of a composite friction material make it difficult to understand the correlation between the formulation of brake lining and the frictional performance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the use of CPC dust along with BX has been investigated for assessing the effect on friction coefficient. CPC has resin in it. BX is a boron production which is widely used in boron glass production and in ceramic industry for increasing the heat- resistant and -forming abrasion resistant. Newly formulated brake lining material with five different ingredients has been tested under Friction Assessment and Screening Test. Friction coefficient, wear rate and scanning electron microscope for friction surface were examined to assess the performance of these samples.

Findings

Analysis of the experimental results shows that the brake lining material containing CPC and BX significantly improved the stability of the friction coefficient, fade and wear resistance.

Originality/value

Several investigations have been conducted to use different materials in brake pads. The brake pad standards have been provided in previous studies, as well as the aims for economical and sustainable production. In the present study, production of brake pads by CPC dust and BX has been executed. Parallel results have been presented between previously reported and present study, in view of brake characteristics and wear resistance. Use of the lower cost and productive organic sources of material are the main improvement of the present study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of fly ash content on the friction–wear performance of bronze-based brake lining material.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, bronze-based brake linings containing 0-12 weight per cent fly ash were produced by the hot-pressing process. The friction-wear properties of the unreinforced bronze matrix brake lining material and fly ash reinforced samples were investigated using a Chase-type friction tester. The hardness and density of the samples were also determined. The microstructures and friction surfaces of the samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy.

Findings

The experimental results showed that the fly ash content significantly affects the friction-wear properties of the brake lining material. It was found that the friction coefficient increases with the increase in the fly ash content for the brake lining materials studied. Moreover, the mass losses in the wear test were lower for the brake linings containing over 4 weight per cent fly ash than unreinforced bronze-based lining material.

Originality/value

This study has proven to be useful in exploring fly ash particles as low cost reinforcing materials in improving the friction–wear performance of bronze-based brake lining material. In addition, the use of fly ash particles in the manufacture of brake lining materials contributes to reducing the production cost of brake linings and to a sustainable environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential impact of trade openness on economic growth for the economy of Brunei Darussalam.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical analyses are conducted using the autoregressive distributed lagged model (ARDL) procedure and the data used were spanning from 1989 to 2018.

Findings

The obtained results indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship between trade openness and economic growth. Similarly, the results also revealed that domestic investment and natural resources positively impacted economic growth. Further, this paper found that human capital has impacted economic growth both negatively and significantly, which is against the prior expectation. Moreover, in the short-run, trade openness and domestic investment have lost its significance level while all other variables have maintained both their significance levels and signs of their coefficients.

Practical implications

This paper has provided comprehensive evidence regarding the relationship between trade openness and economic growth for Brunei Darussalam. Therefore, the policymakers of Brunei are suggested to take practical steps to gear up trade liberalization, and hence attain higher growth. Further, a favorable attention is also needed toward economic diversification and encouraging domestic investment to accelerate the long-run economic growth.

Originality/value

As this is a comprehensive study on the economy of Brunei Darussalam, therefore, this paper expects that the policymakers would find it useful while formulating and exercising suitable policies related to trade openness.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide some useful information on the tribological performance of thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) reinforced with rigid glass fillers of different shapes and sizes under dry, water, and oil lubrication conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Rigid glass fillers of different shapes and sizes are chosen to modify TPI and its mechanical properties are measured. The stress‐strain behaviors of the composites are simulated by the finite element method and the effect of filler morphology is also considered. Furthermore, the tribological performance of the composites is investigated in different environmental media, including air, water, and oil.

Findings

It is demonstrated that the toughness of the materials decreases on filling them with rigid glass, and that stress concentration causes cracks around the spherical glass beads, which reduces the material impact strength. Owing to heat moulding technology, glass fiber has certain orientation and absorbs the impact energy effectively. A better wear‐resistant material is obtained by choosing a bigger filler due to its higher bond strength with the matrix. Under water and oil lubrication, the fatigue failure is the main reason for material wear, and fiber‐reinforced TPI has favorable wear‐resistance due to its shape. Meanwhile, glass beads could roll on the contact surface, which polishes the surface and reduces the friction coefficient, and its effect is reduced on oil lubrication for its high viscosity.

Originality/value

This paper analyzes the effect of rigid glass fillers of different shapes and sizes on the mechanical properties and tribological performance of polyimide composites.
