Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the most effective type of emoji for deriving positive marketing results by determining whether the relationship between brand attitude, brand attachment and purchase intention is moderated by the various types of prosocial expression-based brand emojis used.
Design/methodology/approach
An online survey was administered to Koreans in their 20s. Starbucks brand emojis were classified into three types: static gesture, animated gesture and a combined animated gesture and displayed word. A moderated–mediation analysis was performed to verify the research hypotheses. Gender, age, region of residence, frequency of Starbucks use and Starbucks favorability were used as control variables.
Findings
Animations in emojis were shown to strengthen the marketing effect. Further, combining animated prosocial gestures and displayed words had a more positive marketing effect than merely applying animated prosocial gestures.
Originality/value
This study closely examined the role of verbal, in the form of colloquial words, and nonverbal aspects, in the form of emojis, in the creation of positive business outcomes. Additionally, the positive marketing effect of animated emojis is discussed from a mechanistic point of view by linking research results to those in the field of neuroscience (mirroring by mirror neurons).

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the content of health promotional web sites in two culturally distinct countries, the USA and South Korea, by investigating the level of interactivity and types of advertising appeals presented on antismoking web sites.
Design/methodology/approach
Antismoking web sites in the two countries were collected through the three major search engines (msn, Yahoo and Google) using relevant keywords. The final sample contained a total of 89 web sites (USA=67, South Korea=22) that met the condition of promoting antismoking behavior rather than just selling antismoking products. Three bilingual coders were hired for the analysis.
Findings
The South Korean antismoking web sites presented significantly higher levels of interactivity than their USA counterparts. By contrast, there is hardly any differentiation between the two countries in the amount of advertising appeals used on the health web sites.
Research limitations/implications
Even though antismoking is certainly an important global issue, the findings related to antismoking web sites may not be generalizable to various other health‐related topics. Future research should replicate our findings on interactivity and advertising appeals in the context of various health issues.
Practical implications
To cross‐cultural researchers, the results provide more theoretical and practical rationales for cross‐cultural differences beyond such well‐known typologies as Hofstede's Individualism/Collectivism and Hall's high‐low context.
Originality/value
This study provided at least two useful findings for practitioners and researchers: better definition of the roles of cultural differences in the level of interactivity and the types of advertising appeals in promoting health information online and a broadening of the scope of cross‐cultural advertising research to health promotional contexts online.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation between average ratings (viewership) and the volume and valence of electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) for early episodes of TV shows.
Design/methodology/approach
Linear regression was performed in which the dependent variable is average TV ratings and main independent variables are volume and valence of e-WOM. The study used a Breusch–Pagan test to detect heteroscedasticity. Accordingly, the model is analyzed using heteroscedasticity-consistent standard error estimators.
Findings
The results show that the volume of the early e-WOM does not significantly contribute to explaining average ratings, but the valence does.
Originality/value
Because the advertising revenue of television broadcasters is determined according to expected TV ratings, the average ratings should be predicted as early as possible. This study shows that analyzing early e-WOM helps predict average ratings.

Abstract
Purpose
The study aims to examine factors that influence customers' intention to use online food delivery applications using a smartphone. The factors examined in this study are based on the existing theory of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) namely performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, information quality, price-saving orientation and time-saving orientation towards intention to use the applications. Moreover, this research model also has been expanded with an additional dimension, attitude towards online food delivery services which lead to the intention to use online food delivery services through a smartphone. Furthermore, the present study also tested the role of age as moderator constructs between attitude towards online food delivery services and intention to use online food delivery services through a smartphone.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employed a quantitative method and 256 respondents participated in this study. The questionnaires are distributed using a convenience sampling technique and the data is analysed using partial least square approach.
Findings
The result shows that four (4) constructs, i.e. social influence, information quality, price-saving orientation and time-saving orientation have a positive relationship and significant effect on attitude towards online food delivery service where it enhances the intention to use the application. Attitude towards online food delivery services also has a significant effect on the intention to use. Furthermore, age was not found significant to moderate the relationship between attitude and intention to use.
Practical implications
The output of this study has several practical contributions such as enhances the existing knowledge and skillset of the shared-economy industry, online food delivery service providers as well as restaurant owners in improving the quality of life of the customers. It also provides contextual knowledge and a deeper understanding of online food delivery applications for customers in Malaysia.
Originality/value
The findings provide a guiding principle for improving the present determinant factors, attitude towards online food delivery service and intention to use online food delivery applications.
