Abstract

The development of the Singapore banking market over the last 15 years is examined and the issue of “overbanking” within the entry barriers framework is considered. Three measures covering profitability, sources of funds, and business development were used to assess the performance of the market. The results indicated that the market is expanding and that every member is enjoying a growing share.

Abstract

In recent years, many foreign firms have flocked to China (People’s Republic of China) to take advantage of the opportunities in the large market. However, some of these firms have faced logistical problems in transporting and distributing their goods in China. Identifies the transportation problems faced by foreign firms operating in China and examines the possible actions and factors for minimizing such problems. The objectives of this study are achieved through a survey of Singapore‐based manufacturing firms that have operations in China. The survey results show that some transportation problems were more serious than others. The type of transport mode and ownership of the transport services used can affect the degree of satisfaction for the transportation of goods in China. Also identifies the actions taken by the firms that were most effective in alleviating the transportation problems. The government can play an important role in improving the logistical environment.

Abstract

Presents the findings of a survey of undergraduates on bank selection preferences. In the study, nine criteria for bank selection decision and five banks are identified, and the decision problem is structured into a three‐level hierarchy using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The findings indicate that undergraduates place high emphasis on the pricing and product dimensions of bank services. The results are of interest to bank managers because they provide information on the importance of the selection criteria as well as areas of strengths and weaknesses of banks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to redefine the urban heritage value of trade streets in Hanoi's Ancient Quarter (AQ) and propose an expanded notion of the “historicity” found through intangible cultural heritage (ICH).

Design/methodology/approach

A longitudinal analysis was conducted to examine the historical transitions of trade streets, thereby providing an alternative value perspective for considering the area's conservation management. The trade streets were specifically analysed from the pre-colonial era to 2017 using past survey data concerning the distribution and concentration of trade types, statistical documents from the colonial era and recent fieldwork data from investigations into 79 trade streets, thus identifying seven patterns of change.

Findings

Individual trade streets contribute to the unique identities of their respective streets while collectively providing experiential value through the overall variety and density of trade types. Further, the value of modernised trade streets can be found in their support of the area's systemic and experiential values.

Practical implications

Current management approaches should shift to include non-traditional trade streets that have experienced gradual changes or retained specific businesses for long periods of time.

Originality/value

This was the first study to conduct a longitudinal analysis of AQ trading with partial support from statistical data. It explored an expanded way of interpreting historicity from the viewpoint of dynamic ICH along the two axes of pace and intensity by tracing changes in commercial activities over time.

Abstract

Purpose

Among others in South Vietnam, the Temple of Literature in Vinh Long is the only one that has preserved its original form and layout. As such in 1991, the temple was recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a national-level historical and cultural relic. Nevertheless, the temple has been neither studied nor documented to any great depth. Only a few historical descriptions for local tour guidebooks and photo catalogs exist. Therefore this paper aims to initially record heritage values, spatial characteristics and the process of major changes, while documenting the current state of the temple structure and carrying out on-site inspections to survey the buildings.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper outlines the collection of survey data through field survey and provides an overview of the existing significant heritage factors of the Temple of Literature in Vinh Long by comparative examination in relation to other surviving temples and analyzing its unique spatial characteristics and indigenous cultural decorations in detail.

Findings

Although the layout of the temples was influenced by the Chinese Confucius's principles and the notion of Feng Shui, it is evident from the study that the design of the temple has many architectural elements that reveal Vietnam's unique culture and local features. In particular, the Temple of Literature in Vinh Long was a symbol of feudal education, symbolizing sacred traditional values in the field of education for the people of Vinh Long province. Stone steles recorded names of all contributors related to the construction and restoration of the temple with sincere gratitude. Moreover, many of the decorative motifs contain many indigenous cultural and artistic values of Vietnam, reflecting traditional Vietnamese beliefs and ethnographic features.

Research limitations/implications

By comparatively analyzing the temple with others, it reveals the unique spatial features, layouts, changes and evolutions of the temple. Unlike the oldest and the largest Temple of Literature in Hanoi, the temples in the South are much smaller in terms of complex sizes and the number of buildings. They are mostly composed of a singular structure, the Attained Talent House, with some basic gates and water features interwoven within the landscape of the site. Based on the elementary layout, some subsidiary buildings were added according to the needs and site conditions, and in accordance with the bilateral axis.

Social implications

The awareness and preservation of the architectural features of the local temple are needed to protect heritage monuments and to enhance cultural resources as part of securing Vietnamese ideology for a longer period of time. While the interest in historic preservation and conservation activities of heritage buildings in Vietnam has slowly grown in attention over the last decade, it is evident that many opportunities remain. It is hoped that this research is a small step toward further research, education and advocacy in the preservation of historic buildings in Vietnam.

Originality/value

The introduction of Chinese Confucian thought to Vietnam was one of the most substantial influences in Vietnamese intellectual history. Despite being an important part of the nation's architectural, cultural and intellectual heritage sites, the study and documentation of the Temples of Literature have been relatively neglected or marginalized. Accordingly, this study is significant to reveal not only the values and unique heritage characteristics of the temple, but also to prioritize resources for continued study and preservation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the location of regional growth poles in Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

A potential gravity model is constructed to estimate how attractive a location is in relation to other locations within a specifically defined region using spatial interpolation tools.

Findings

We present the calculated and visualized potential gravitational energy (or attractiveness) for every province showcasing regional growth poles in Vietnam.

Research limitations/implications

Graphical evidence need to be supported by statistical analysis to establish causal effects of driving factors on growth measures.

Originality/value

This is the first study to use a potential gravity model to study growth poles in Vietnam.
