Abstract

Purpose

The prediction of by-product gas is an important guarantee for the full utilization of resources. The purpose of this research is to predict gas consumption to provide a basis for gas dispatch and reduce the production cost of enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a new method using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and the back propagation neural network is proposed. Unfortunately, this method does not achieve the ideal prediction. Further, using the advantages of long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network for long-term dependence, a prediction method based on EEMD and LSTM is proposed. In this model, the gas consumption series is decomposed into several intrinsic mode functions and a residual term (r(t)) by EEMD. Second, each component is predicted by LSTM. The predicted values of all components are added together to get the final prediction result.

Findings

The results show that the root mean square error is reduced to 0.35%, the average absolute error is reduced to 1.852 and the R-squared is reached to 0.963.

Originality/value

A new gas consumption prediction method is proposed in this paper. The production data collected in the actual production process is non-linear, unstable and contains a lot of noise. But the EEMD method has the unique superiority in the analysis data aspect and may solve these questions well. The prediction of gas consumption is the result of long-term training and needs a lot of prior knowledge. Relying on LSTM can solve the problem of long-term dependence.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study a new liquid-phase assisted texture treatment method to improve the tribological properties of 304 stainless steel.

Design/methodology/approach

Three groups of textured type (KY, KJ and YJ) were prepared on 304 stainless steel surface using laser circular and cross scanning method in air and liquid assisted condition. The surface morphology and element content of test samples were measured with scanning electron microscope, energy spectrum. Then, the tribological test was carried out using MWF-500 reciprocating friction and wear testing machine under dry and oil lubrication condition.

Findings

The experimental results showed that the textured surface of laser processing in air was obviously blackened, and the oxygen content was increased from 16.9% to 24%. These cases did not occur on liquid-assisted laser textured surface, which induced a better wettability and surface texture processing quality. For friction test, the friction coefficient of cross-scanning textured surface prepared in assisted liquid (YJ) was the smallest. It is reduced by 55% in oil lubrication case compared to the original surface (YS). The cross-scanning textured surface prepared in air (KJ) was a little worse in friction coefficient and a little better in wear quantity than the cross-scanning textured surface prepared in assisted liquid (YJ). It is indicated that the laser processing surface with assisted liquid has obvious advantages in surface texture quality and interfacial tribological property. The main reason is that the assisted liquid plays a role in cooling and protecting action of the machined surface. The bubbles, generated at the solid–liquid interface because of the laser heat effect, scatter the laser beam and carry out the processed melt meanwhile. The lubricating medium is easier to penetrate and store in the contact interfaces because of the higher surface textured performance and wettability.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this work is in providing a new surface texture processing method that has a better surface micropits quality and interfacial tribology regulation ability.

Abstract

Purpose

To address the shortcomings of existing academic user information needs identification methods, such as low efficiency and high subjectivity, this study aims to propose an automated method of identifying online academic user information needs.

Design/methodology/approach

This study’s method consists of two main parts: the first is the automatic classification of academic user information needs based on the bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) model. The second is the key content extraction of academic user information needs based on the improved MDERank key phrase extraction (KPE) algorithm. Finally, the applicability and effectiveness of the method are verified by an example of identifying the information needs of academic users in the field of materials science.

Findings

Experimental results show that the BERT-based information needs classification model achieved the highest weighted average F1 score of 91.61%. The improved MDERank KPE algorithm achieves the highest F1 score of 61%. The empirical analysis results reveal that the information needs of the categories “methods,” “experimental phenomena” and “experimental materials” are relatively high in the materials science field.

Originality/value

This study provides a solution for automated identification of academic user information needs. It helps online academic resource platforms to better understand their users’ information needs, which in turn facilitates the platform’s academic resource organization and services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore how different actors interacted to influence local labour legislation in the case of the collective bargaining regulations in Guangdong Province, China, using long-term observation and in-depth interviews.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses the case study method to investigate the process of local labour law-making in China. First, the primary data focus on a series of in-depth interviews conducted in 2014. In Guangdong Province, the author collected the thoughts of three well-informed provincial and municipal-level trade union officials, one government official, five scholars and lawyers, four enterprise union chairs and three labour activists. Second, these interviews are triangulated with legislative documents and the author’s observation of three public meetings. Held at various times from 2011 to 2014, these meetings were organized to discuss different legislative drafts on collective bargaining.

Findings

The six-year process of adopting collective bargaining legislation in Guangdong presents a complex picture as different actors joined the process at different times and engaged in different ways. Labour strikes were a crucial force in drawing the attention of both the local and central governments and functioned as a means to repeatedly make collective labour relations a policy “issue” for the government, particularly in 2010. Another actor – the local official trade unions – played a decisive role by not only putting the “issue” into the decision-making agenda, but by also providing policy alternatives based on workers’ bargaining practices. At the same time, business associations, using slow economic growth as an excuse, exerted their economic leverage to pressure for suspension of the first two rounds of legislation. Nevertheless, the new political leadership assuming office in 2013, using an adoptive but restrained logic, pushed for the enactment of the compromise regulation.

Research limitations/implications

Guangdong Province and its emerging collective labour regimes are not representatives of China, but they are at the frontier of the labour field. Thus, this case study was an example of the “most dynamic” interaction with the “most participative” actors and perhaps the “most pro-labour” of China’s official trade unions.

Originality/value

This paper is original and draws special attention to the dynamic process of the local law-making and the rationales of different actors in China.

Abstract

Purpose

In many cases, the external pipelines of aero-engine are subjected to random excitation. The purpose of this paper is to reduce the vibration response of the pipeline system effectively by adjusting the hoop layout.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a spatial pipeline supported by multi-hoops is taken as the object, the methods of solution of the vibration response of the pipeline system by using pseudo excitation and hoop layouts optimization with amplitude reduction of vibration response as the goal are presented. First, the finite element model of the spatial pipeline system is presented. Then, an optimization model spatial pipeline is established. Finally, a case study is carried out to prove the rationality of the random vibration response analysis of the pipeline system. Furthermore, the proposed optimization model and genetic algorithm are applied to optimize the hoop layout.

Findings

The results show that the maximum response variance after optimization is reduced by 32.8%, which proves the rationality of the developed hoop layout optimization method.

Originality/value

The pseudo excitation method is used to solve the vibration response of aero-engine pipeline system, and the optimization of the hoop layout for aero-engine spatial pipelines under random excitation to reduce random vibration response is studied systematically.

Abstract

Purpose

Esthetic trend changes with the development of society and cultural differences. A minimizer bra designed to make breasts appear smaller is now popular with large-breasted women in China. To conform to the requirements of modern aesthetics in China, this paper aims to investigate vital features of breast appearance that influence people’s subjective evaluation of breast size and analyze how bra design parameters affect breast shape and make breasts appear smaller.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used 3D scanning technology and reverse engineering software to obtain objective breast measurements in detail. A subjective evaluation experiment was conducted to evaluate the overall performance of seven minimizer bras compared to a basic comparison bra. Around 20 design parameters of 8 sample bras were identified to make a further study about the correlation between bra design features and breast shaping effect. To gain a deeper understanding of how bras interact with breast tissue, this study presented heat maps of the breast surface to visualize the deformation of breast shape.

Findings

Nine breasts' characteristics, such as the distance between bust points, breast depth, outer breast curvature and slope, etc. have been determined to be highly correlated with the visual reduction effect of breasts. In addition, for the bras in this experiment, the high-performance bra for women with large breasts tends to have a wider side panel, a wider under band, higher gore and a stronger transverse rigidity of the bra cup. According to the observation of heat maps of the breast surface, soft full-figure bras provide a wider range of compression to the breasts and effectively flatten the breasts.

Originality/value

This paper first aimed at the need to shape the ideal breast appearance for large-breasted women and make a further study of several hot-selling minimizer bras in China. The suggestions given in this paper help lingerie manufacturers better understand how design features of bras can affect their shaping effect and improve the wearing effect of minimizer bras for large-breasted women.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose the increase of heat dissipation requirements of modern electronic equipment and the fast development of micro-scale manufacturing technologies. The heat transfer mechanism is studied in-depth, especially for its pattern of secondary flow caused by the repeated inversion of centrifugal force. Effects of η on the frictional pressure drop and average Nusselt number are studied and the performance of such microchannel heat sink with various bend amplitudes is comprehensively evaluated. These results can provide important insight into the optimal design of this novel design configuration for microelectronics cooling.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional model based on the finite volume approach and SIMPLEC algorithm is performed to test an innovative serpentine microchannel, which behaves differently from conventional serpentine microchannel due to the significant effect of centrifugal force inversion.

Findings

The effect of centrifugal force significantly influences the flow and thermal fields which are responsible for the enhancement in heat transfer coefficient. The number, size and intensity of vortices increase with increasing Re, and the vortices are reformed at every change of the geometry in a periodic fashion. The serpentine microchannel studies more effectively at larger bend amplitude. Pressure fluctuations and temperature variation are greater with increasing bend amplitude.

Practical implications

Several techniques have been developed to augment single-phase convective heat transfer in channels. One technique is to use a serpentine channel that enhances the heat transfer due to flow mixing and periodic interruption of thermal boundary layers. This technique has been applied to micro-heat exchangers, thermal regenerators and mini/microreactors.

Social implications

The optimal design of this novel design configuration for microelectronics cooling can be attained. It will become an effective cooling technology for solving the increasing of heat dissipation requirements of modern electronic equipment.

Originality/value

The flow and heat transfer characteristics are first presented for the circular serpentine microchannel made up of alternate U-bends without interposed straight segments. The present study first examines the effect of such centrifugal force inversion on velocity contour, pressure distribution and temperature distribution. The patterns of secondary flow along the flow passage caused by the repeated inversion of centrifugal force are further studied in depth. The effect of bend amplitude on the flow and heat transfer is explored and the performance of such microchannel heat sink has been comprehensively evaluated.

Abstract

Purpose

Accurate and rapid tracking and counting of building materials are crucial in managing on-site construction processes and evaluating their progress. Such processes are typically conducted by visual inspection, making them time-consuming and error prone. This paper aims to propose a video-based deep-learning approach to the automated detection and counting of building materials.

Design/methodology/approach

A framework for accurately counting building materials at indoor construction sites with low light levels was developed using state-of-the-art deep learning methods. An existing object-detection model, the You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLO v4) algorithm, was adapted to achieve rapid convergence and accurate detection of materials and site operatives. Then, DenseNet was deployed to recognise these objects. Finally, a material-counting module based on morphology operations and the Hough transform was applied to automatically count stacks of building materials.

Findings

The proposed approach was tested by counting site operatives and stacks of elevated floor tiles in video footage from a real indoor construction site. The proposed YOLO v4 object-detection system provided higher average accuracy within a shorter time than the traditional YOLO v4 approach.

Originality/value

The proposed framework makes it feasible to separately monitor stockpiled, installed and waste materials in low-light construction environments. The improved YOLO v4 detection method is superior to the current YOLO v4 approach and advances the existing object detection algorithm. This framework can potentially reduce the time required to track construction progress and count materials, thereby increasing the efficiency of work-in-progress evaluation. It also exhibits great potential for developing a more reliable system for monitoring construction materials and activities.
