Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the important application value of extending the concept of classification rule, so that it can describe and measure the uncertainty of classification knowledge.

Design/methodology/approach

The rough concept lattice (RCL), which is an effective tool for uncertain data analysis and knowledge discovery, reflects a kind of unification of concept intent and upper/lower approximation extent, as well as the certain and uncertain relations between objects and attributes.

Findings

A classification rules extraction algorithm, extraction algorithm of classification rule (EACR), based on the RCL is presented by adapting the rough degree to measure uncertainty of classification rule. The algorithm EACR is experimentally validated by taking the star spectrum data as the decision context.

Practical implications

An efficient way for classification rule extraction is provided.

Originality/value

The algorithm EACR based on the RCL is presented by adapting the rough degree to measure uncertainty of classification rule.

Abstract

Purpose

“China phenomena” is changing the knowledge balance of the world. Many countries, in particular, Western countries, are carefully following the development and change of China's technology system and innovation policy. After turning itself into the world's manufacturing powerhouse, China aims to be an innovation‐oriented country. The purpose of this paper is to list some of the key factors which favor or hinder China's efforts to build an innovative economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper lists some of the key factors, which favor or hinder China's efforts to build an innovation‐oriented country. The factors identified are summarized from a literature review on studies about China's efforts to build innovation capabilities.

Findings

The paper finds that three key factors favor China's efforts to build an innovation‐oriented country, including escalating R&D spending, the upgrading of technological capabilities and global linkages. Four central challenges are facing China, such as how to build human resources, innovative cultures and incentive systems appropriate for innovation and how to strength intellectual property rights protection.

Originality/value

Today, China is, by and large, a follower rather than an innovator in technology. The question whether China will become a real innovative economy in the next 13 years is hard to answer. This paper lists some of the key factors which favor or hinder China's effort to build an innovation‐oriented economy, all of which should be of interest to China's scholars, government officials and practicing managers.

Abstract

Purpose

The invention and use of mobile commerce (m-commerce) technology have progressed in recent years. In small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the decision to implement business-to-business m-commerce is a multiple-criteria decision analysis problem that involves both qualitative and quantitative factors, and its evaluation may be based on imprecise information or uncertain data. Furthermore, there may be significant dependences or important feedback among different levels of criteria or alternatives. However, most conventional decision models cannot capture these complex interrelationships. The purpose of this paper is to adopt a new hybrid multiple attribute decision model (MADM) model to evaluate the implementation of business-to-business m-commerce by SMEs in Taiwan to enhance the thinking of management and improve decision gaps.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors present the use of a new hybrid MADM combined with a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method to construct an influential network relationship map (INRM) and find the influential weights of DANP (DEMATEL-based ANP) in criteria from the influential relationship matrix, and the modified VIKOR method using influential weights to evaluate and integrate the criteria performance in the gaps and to analyze how to reduce the gaps to evaluate the decision to implement business-to-business m-commerce by SMEs based on INRM.

Findings

The findings of using the new hybrid MADM model can efficiently and successfully be applied to the business-to-business m-commerce of SMEs to improve and reduce the performance gaps among each criterion/aspect when setting improvement strategies for achieving an aspiration level based on INRM.

Originality/value

This study achieves the following: successfully building a decision network (called an influential network relation map (INRM)) of the technological advances and implementations of business-to-business m-commerce for solving the inter-dependence and feedback of criteria/aspects in the real world problem; how changing effective solutions from existing performance of situations/alternatives into aspiration levels to fit the current competitive markets in the business-to-business m-commerce of SMEs; and efficiently shifting from ranking and selection when determining the most preferable approaches to performance improvement by modified VIKOR methods.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the feasibility and challenges of one open training model in family‐owned companies' offspring education, regarded as CHINT's prodigal fund.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is currently confined to literature and case study on CHINT's prodigal fund and is primarily based on the documents analysis and interviews with the members from the board of supervisors and the board of directors.

Findings

The relationship between the performance of venture capital fund and the succession was analyzed. It is found that the two main reasons affecting the development of prodigal fund are the unsystematically organization of fund development and the lack of diligence. Finally, to attract and motivate the use of family venture funds and to establish a sound governance mechanism will be the two chief areas to promote the development of family funds.

Originality/value

It is the first attempt to analyze and summarize this creative practice in succession – family venture fund. The case study provides a valuable perspective on educating the entrepreneurial spirit of innovation and exploration.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper sets out to review the literature of technology strategy, competitive advantage and sustainability of international business, in particular, the contribution that the enactment of technology strategy can make toward the effective implementation of business sustainability in the post-recession. It examines what kind of role technology strategy plays in Chinese business and how business sustainability could be leveraged through the implementation of appropriate technology strategy. This paper attempts to address various crucial issues in the establishment of a proper technology strategy for the sustainability of the business in the global market place based upon case study of five vanguard Chinese companies.

Design/methodology/approach

This exploratory study primarily adapts a qualitative multiple-case-study method which attempts to understand how Chinese firms perceive the role of technology strategy in their business, to capture the practical terms and concepts underpinning technology strategy and sustainability, and to allow us to have an analysis of the relationship between technology strategy and sustainability of business. Finally, ten propositions concerning “technology strategy and sustainability of business” are to be developed and verified along the theoretical development of the paper and examination of five cases. The nature of the study results that the paper applies qualitative method with a multiple-case-study approach, including Geely, Haier, TCL, Huawei and Lenovo.

Findings

This paper addresses the crucial issues – management of technology as basic function in international business and the close relationship between technology strategy and business sustainability. It showcases the Chinese business paradigm from “imitation to innovation” of how Chinese hi-tech firms built their core competence. This study provides fresh insights for multinational companies in creating competitive advantage through designing an appropriate technology strategy.

Originality/value

Theoretically this research fills the gap of an area of technology management which has been rarely touched. This will have strong implication not only to Chinese companies but also non-Chinese multinational companies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to improve the maneuverability and stability of four-wheel chassis in a small paddy field; a front axle swing steering four-wheel chassis with optimal steering is designed.

Design/methodology/approach

When turning, the front inner wheel stops and the rear inner wheel is in the following state. The hydraulic drive system of the walking wheel adopts a driving mode in which two front-wheel motors are connected in series and two rear wheel motors in parallel. The chassis uses a combination of a gasoline engine with a water cooling system, a CVT continuously variable transmission and a hydraulic drive system to increase the control capability. The front axle rotary chassis adopts a step-less variable speed engine and a hydraulic control system to solve the hydraulic stability of the chassis in uphill and downhill conditions so as to effectively control the over-speed of the wheel-side drive motors. Through the quadratic orthogonal rotation combination design test, the mathematical models of uphill and downhill front-wheel pressures and test factors are established.

Findings

The results show that the chassis stability is optimal when the back pressure is 0.5 MPa, and the rotating slope is 4°. The uphill and downhill pressures of the front wheels are 2.38 MPa and 1.5 MPa, respectively.

Originality/value

The influence of external changes on the pressure of hydraulic motors is studied through experiments, which lays the foundation for further research.

Abstract

Purpose

The intense queuing phenomenon in Chinese banks has been a critical issue for bank managers for a long time, especially in big cities, which increases the possibility of customer dissatisfaction. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is to explore the antecedents of post‐recovery satisfaction within China's “Big 4” commercial banks. By tracking the nature of service failures and examining the overall performance of the service recovery process in the Chinese banking industry, the authors aim to investigate how customer expectations, their perception of recovery justice and recovery quality affect customer satisfaction under service recovery context.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on disconfirmation paradigm and fairness theory, a conceptual model with 12 hypotheses was derived for the banking sector. With reference to the instruments RECOVSAT and SERVQUAL scale, a questionnaire was developed and sent to a geographically stratified, random sample of 300 participants in Changsha City. Confirmatory factor analysis was used for reliability/validity testing, and the hypothesised relationships among the latent constructs were estimated using structural equation modelling.

Findings

Consistent with most previous researches, the empirical results supported the idea that recovery expectation negatively influenced the recovery quality perceptions, expectancy disconfirmation and satisfaction with service recovery. Other findings included that both positive disconfirmation and recovery quality perceptions had positive effect on recovery satisfaction. However, unlike other studies relating to service justice, interactional justice was found to have no significant effect on quality perception or satisfaction with recovery, and this was attributed to customer's higher tolerance zone under the particular competition environment in China.

Originality/value

By exploring the antecedents of post‐recovery satisfaction within China's “Big 4” commercial banks, the study provided valuable findings in relation to participants' perceptions on recovery justice and quality. It highlighted the effect of characteristics of Chinese customers on post‐recovery satisfaction, and the importance of good understanding of customer expectation and employee empowerment in the banking industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a numerical approaching analysis method combining the sequential unconstrained minimization technique and finite element method to identify the loading condition and geometry of smart structures accurately.

Design/methodology/approach

A new load identification model is built and the finite element approaching method is proposed by the combination of finite element method and optimization technique.

Findings

The approaching algorithm has good convergence and fast approximation speed; the accuracy can meet the engineering requirements. The approaching model is simple, and the precision is controllable and it can be used to solve the load identification problem of the smart material structure.

Originality/value

In view of the cited papers, the information sensed by the smart structure is limited, discrete and contains certain errors. How to derive the cause from the limited, error-containing discrete information is an important problem that needs to be solved by the self-diagnosis function. A load identification model based on structural displacement response is established and a numerical approximation method is proposed by combining the finite element method with the optimization technique; the load magnitude and position of the structure are identified according to the displacement measurement values of the internal finite point in the structure under the load condition.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the evolution of policies and practices of innovation in China for the past 40 years.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a review paper. It adopts a different multi-dimensional, qualitative methodology to examine China’s trajectory of innovation from the economic reform since 1978, highlighting “China” experiences in the developing innovation-driven economy, also pointing the challenges that China faces in this transition process and future prospects. The analysis of China’s innovation performance was based mostly on secondary data from sources and institutions that use statistical data to build country rankings, such as the global innovation index and global competitiveness index.

Findings

It is found that the institutional foundations of the national innovation system in China are already being laid, and so far, China has made extraordinary progress regarding innovation performance from country to region and from business to individual. However, some critical challenges in its innovation-driven development still need urgent attention and effective efforts to reinforce them.

Originality/value

This paper aims to fill the gap in the literature by providing an overview of the evolution of the policies and practices of innovation development in China since the 1978 economic reforms and explores the Chinese experiences in transforming into an innovation-driven economy.
