Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to integrate Modigliani-Miller (MM) theory and stock repurchases strategy to procure a practical concept for capital decision.

Design/methodology/approach

No-arbitrage proof model deduction was used in this study. The authors consider corporate tax and funding sources as two crucial factors drawn in the model. The paper derives some propositions by trichotomy property and keeps the key assumptions of MM Capital Structure Theory.

Findings

There are two different effects on firm's value through stock repurchases. The positive effect occurs on firm's value through stock repurchases with loan fund. And the negative impact exists on firm's value through stock repurchases with idle fund.

Research limitations/implications

Notably, in the real world there are three limitations with such an arbitrage transaction (Stulz, 2000). The first one is the default risk, and the second one is transaction costs and the last one is the perfect credit market assumption. In the near future, the authors suggest it would be interesting to involve the interest rate factor and contingent tax variable into our model.

Originality/value

On the basis of no arbitrage opportunity, this paper considers both trichotomy property and MM theory. It proves the share repurchase strategy should be financed by borrowing fund. In contrast, share repurchase should not be executed with idle fund because of opportunity cost.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore and map the intellectual structure of leadership studies during 1997‐2006. This paper also attempts to help researchers identify the important publications and the influential scholars as well as the correlations among these publications using citation and co‐citation.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, co‐citation analysis and social network analysis techniques are used to research knowledge network of the leadership literature by analyzing 31,232 cited references of 2,322 articles from two leadership related journals in social science citation index and science citation index databases.

Findings

Four factors emerged in this paper: effectiveness of leadership style, leadership theory and development, leadership categorization, and current issues of leadership research.

Originality/value

This paper provides management researchers a tool for evaluating leadership publications and provides a systematic and objective means of determining the relative importance of different knowledge nodes in the development of the leadership research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a research model on Taiwan's National Police Administration setting, extending the theory of planned behavior, reasoned action, and expectancy‐valence, and developing the more neglected aspects of the goal‐setting theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants were Taiwan's National Police Administration employing 500 full‐time employees. Structural Equation Modeling was used to explore the relationship among regulatory focus, uncertainty towards organizational change, and organizational commitment.

Findings

The results were that promotion focus or prevention focus had a significantly positive influence on uncertainty towards organizational change, and only promotion focus had a significantly positive influence on organizational commitment. In addition, uncertainty towards organizational change had a significantly negative influence on organizational commitment. The results supported the significant role of uncertainty towards organizational change as a mediator in the relationship between promotion focus (or prevention focus) and organizational commitment.

Originality/value

The results of the research help fill important research gaps (lack of empirical research and generalization) in the regulatory focus theory literature, clarifying the special role of regulatory focus in a traditional police organization's change processing, and its implications for police officers utilizing a non‐US setting to allow a cross‐cultural examination of regulatory focus theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify the underlying dimensions of trustworthiness of financial service providers in the Indian retail banking sector and to model trustworthiness as a set of second‐order factors. The study replicates and extends the work of Ennew and Sekhon in the Indian context.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the trustworthiness scale developed by Ennew and Sekhon this study identifies six first‐order factors of trustworthiness for retail bankers in India using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Then the study modeled trustworthiness as a set of three second‐order factors using second‐order confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

The first‐order factors obtained for trustworthiness of retail bankers are customer orientation, integrity and honesty, communication and similarity, shared values, expertise, and ability and consistency. The second‐order confirmatory factor analysis resulted in three higher order factors namely, competency, openness and benevolence.

Practical implications

The various dimensions of trustworthiness should be viewed as levers for improving a bank's trustworthiness in the minds of its current customers. At the same time, these dimensions will help them in reflecting an image of trustworthiness in the minds of its potential customers. Establishment of trustworthiness as an element of corporate image will provide competitive advantage to the service firms and improve their financial performance.

Originality/value

The research tests for the reliability and validity of the trustworthiness scale of Ennew and Sekhon. This study provides a window to the dimensions on which retail bank customers in an emerging economy such as India perceive a retail bank's trustworthiness. Furthermore, this study is an attempt to model trustworthiness as a set of second‐order factors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodologies of researching literature in leadership studies.

Design/methodology/approach

Objectives are achieved through a series of research techniques, including bibliometrics (citation and co‐citation research), social networking, mapping and cross‐referencing. The most influential authors, journals and articles in leadership studies were identified from 1997‐2006.

Findings

Certain authors provide the core theories of leadership studies, and very few authors in the field are co‐cited in other articles.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should not be limited to the Leadership Quarterly and Educational Learning journals used for this study.

Practical implications

Practical outcomes include greater understanding, nurturing and training of leadership talent in organizations.

Originality/value

The paper outlines a coherent research methodology for literature review in a given field of study, while also providing a helpful bibliography of influential work in leadership studies.
