Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the spherical entropy image (SEI), a novel global descriptor for the scan registration of three-dimensional (3D) point clouds. This paper also introduces a global feature-less scan registration strategy based on SEI. It is advantageous for 3D data processing in the scenarios such as mobile robotics and reverse engineering.

Design/methodology/approach

The descriptor works through representing the scan by a spherical function named SEI, whose properties allow to decompose the six-dimensional transformation into 3D rotation and 3D translation. The 3D rotation is estimated by the generalized convolution theorem based on the spherical Fourier transform of SEI. Then, the translation recovery is determined by phase only matched filtering.

Findings

No explicit features and planar segments should be contained in the input data of the method. The experimental results illustrate the parameter independence, high reliability and efficiency of the novel algorithm in registration of feature-less scans.

Originality/value

A novel global descriptor (SEI) for the scan registration of 3D point clouds is presented. It inherits both descriptive power of signature-based methods and robustness of histogram-based methods. A high reliability and efficiency registration method of scans based on SEI is also demonstrated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the emotional contagion theory in print ads, and expand the literature of smiling to different type of smiles and gender congruency. Emotional contagion happens when an emotion is transferred from a sender to a receiver by the synchronization of emotions from the emitter. Drawing on emotional contagion theory, the authors expand this concept and propose that smiles in static facial expressions influence product evaluation. They suggest that false smiles do not have the same impact as genuine smiles on product evaluation, and the congruence between the model gender–product in a static ad and the gender of the viewer moderates the effects.

Design/methodology/approach

In Experiment 1, subjects were randomly assigned to view one of the two ad treatments to guard against systematic error (e.g. bias). In Experiment 2, it was investigated whether viewing a static ad featuring a model with a false smile can result in a positive product evaluation as was the case with genuine smiles (H3). In Experiment 3, it was assumed that when consumers evaluate an ad featuring a smiling face, the facial expression influences product evaluation, and this influence is moderated by the congruence between the gender of the ad viewer and the product H gender of the model in the ad.

Findings

Across three experiments, the authors found that the model’s facial expression influenced the product evaluation. Second, they supported the association between a model’s facial expression and mimicry synchronization. Third, they showed that genuine smiles have a higher impact on product evaluation than false smiles. This novel result enlarges the research on genuine smiles to include false smiles. Fourth, the authors supported the gender–product congruence effect in that the gender of the ad’s reader and the model have a moderating effect on the relationship between the model’s facial expression and the reader’s product evaluation.

Originality/value

Marketing managers would benefit from understanding that genuine smiles can encourage positive emotions on the part of consumers via emotional contagion, which would be very useful to create a positive effect on products. The authors improved upon previous psychological theory (Gunnery et al., 2013; Hennig-Thurau et al., 2006) showing that a genuine smile results in higher evaluation scores of products presented in static ads. The theoretical explanation for this effect is the genuine smile, which involves contraction of both zygomatic major and orbicularis oculi muscles. These facial muscles can be better perceived and transmit positive emotions (Hennig-Thurau et al., 2006).

Abstract

Purpose

Today, the financing mechanisms to support small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) development have been a subject of great interest and a challenge to policy makers as SMEs are regarded as an important sector contributing to economic growth and stability. This paper is concerned with the bank financing policies to support SME development in China. The purpose of this paper is to examine the governmental financing policies and the innovation financing system of China. The discussions are focused on the bank financing policies to support SME development in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is a qualitative research with the use of case study methodology (Eisenhardt, 1989; Yin, 2003). The research is focused on the policy perspectives of bank financing to support SME development in the case of China, the world’s fastest-growing economy. To explore the role of financial institutions and banks in SME financing in China, the research also derives evidence from a collection of documentary investigation. The research fieldwork and interviews were undertaken in Beijing and Shanghai, major financial centers in China, with the use of semi-structured questionnaire. The analyses are undertaken to answer the key questions of: What are the Chinese government’s strategies to support the development of SMEs? To what extent the government policies in bank financing can support SMEs and promote the development of an innovative economy?

Findings

The empirical study has shown that despite the introduction of the 12th Five-Year National Economic and Social Development Plan to support SMEs development, China still needs to improve regulatory policies in support of innovative businesses which would help its transition to an innovation-driven economy. The study provides lessons and policy guidelines to improve the competitiveness of SMEs in China. The insights from this study can also be applied to other developing and emerging economies attempting to understand the role of financing mechanisms in building an innovative economy.

Originality/value

The study has addressed the policy challenges to support SME development in China, a major Asian emerging country and one of the fastest-growing economies in the world (with averaged growth rate of 10 percent per annum). The empirical study of policy challenges was undertaken in Beijing and Shanghai, major financial centers in China. The study offers insights which can be applied to other developing and emerging economies attempting to understand the role of SME financing policies and mechanisms in building an innovative economy.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of polysaccharides increases solubility and consistency and causes functions such as viscosity? Moisture and food emulsifier stabilizer. This study aims to enrich the formulation of low-fat mozzarella cheese using microcoated vitamin D3 (VD3).

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates the addition of hydrocolloids to low-fat mozzarella cheese to enhance its properties and nutritional value. Tests were conducted on cheese samples with 0.05% and 0.25% hydrocolloid concentrations at various stages: before production and at three and six months’ postproduction. The samples were evaluated for elasticity, pH and solubility to select the best one, which was then fortified with VD3. The vitamin was microencapsulated using alginate and whey protein to shield it from light and oxygen, optimizing the formula using the response surface method. The fortified cheese was tested for VD3 content over its shelf life.

Findings

Results indicated that all hydrocolloids tested improved moisture and meltability of the cheese while higher protein levels increased stretchability two to threefold. Rice starch hydrocolloid at 0.05% concentration was chosen due to superior sensory scores and minimal oil separation. This study concluded that VD3 levels remained stable during the cheese’s shelf life, suggesting that this approach could enhance the nutritional value of low-fat cheese without compromising its quality. Therefore, after examining the obtained results and comparing the regression models, the results indicated that the Quadratic model was chosen to investigate the effect of independent variables on the response rate, which had a statistically significant difference with other models (p = 0.0019). Also the results of the area under the curve and using the encapsulation efficiency equation, the percentage of microencapsulated vitamin was obtained, and according to the simulation results, the encapsulation efficiency was reported as 89.02%.

Originality/value

Developing innovative functional dairy products fortified with VD3 could improve the vitamin D status in deficient populations. Therefore, these designs can be applied at industrial scales for functional cheese production.

Abstract

Purpose

Industries have been the most significant contributor to carbon emissions since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The transition to Industry 5.0 (I5.0) marks a pivotal moment in the industrial revolution, which aims to reconcile productivity with environmental responsibility. As concerns about the decline of environmental quality increase and the demand for sustainable industrial methods intensifies, experts recognize the shift toward the I5.0 transition as a crucial turning point.

Design/methodology/approach

This review study explores the convergence of green technological advancements with the evolving landscape of I5.0, thereby presenting a roadmap toward carbon neutrality. Through an extensive analysis of literature spanning from 2012 to 2024, sourced from the Scopus database, the research study unravels the transformative potential of green technological innovations, artificial intelligence, green supply chain management and the metaverse.

Findings

The findings underscore the urgent imperative of integrating green technologies into the fabric of I5.0, highlighting the opportunities and challenges inherent in this endeavor. Furthermore, the study provides insights tailored for policymakers, regulators, researchers and environmental stakeholders, fostering informed decision-making toward a carbon-neutral future.

Originality/value

This review serves as a call to action, urging collective efforts to harness innovation for the betterment of industry and the environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence has witnessed its widespread integration across various industries, contributing to enhanced productivity. However, a comprehensive exploration of the underlying factors influencing the behavior of graphic designers in employing such tools remains incomplete. This research aims to amalgamate the IDT theory with the UTAUT2 model to construct a structural model, delving into the factors affecting graphic designers’ behavior in using GenAI tools.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted with 394 respondents, and the results were analyzed using PLS-SEM.

Findings

The findings reveal that most factors proposed in both the UTAUT2 and IDT theories exert positive influences. Notably, the study highlights that AI anxiety significantly influences designers’ usage behavior.

Originality/value

This research provides a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for both graphic designers and AI developers.

Abstract

Purpose

Research on decision rights partitioning and its impact on platform performance has predominantly focused on single rights, leading to inconclusive results. This study is driven by a more nuanced objective of exploring diverse governance models that can enhance the performance of sharing platforms across different contexts. Rather than delegating single decision right to users, this approach partitions several essential decision rights concurrently throughout the transaction process. By examining the complex relationships between multiple decision rights partitioning and platform performance, this study identifies and explains suitable governance models that are tailored to specific contextual factors for improving the performance of sharing platforms.

Design/methodology/approach

Collecting data from 60 sharing platforms in China, this study employs a combination of cluster and configuration analyses to address research questions.

Findings

The study explores three strategic decision rights partitioning modes widely adopted by sharing platforms. It further identifies four governance models for sharing platforms, which are termed as conservative seller model, conservative buyer model, aggressive seller model and aggressive buyer model, related to certain contextual factors.

Originality/value

In addressing platform governance as key to sharing platform success, the study contributes to the literature by investigating how multiple-rights partitioning portfolios and strategic differentiation in decision rights partitioning can enhance platform performance.
