Abstract

Purpose

For autonomous vehicles, trajectory prediction of surrounding vehicles is beneficial to improving the situational awareness of dynamic and stochastic traffic environments, which is a crucial and indispensable element to realize highly automated driving.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the overall framework consists of two parts: first, a novel driver characteristic and intention estimation (DCIE) model is built to indicate the higher-level information of the vehicle using its low-level motion variables; then, according to the estimation results of the DCIE model, a classified Gaussian process model is established for probabilistic vehicle trajectory prediction under different motion patterns.

Findings

The whole method is later applied and analyzed in the highway lane-change scenarios with the parameters of models learned from the public naturalistic driving data set. Compared with other traditional methods, the performance of this proposed approach is proved superior, demonstrated by the higher accuracy in the long prediction horizon and a more reasonable description of uncertainty.

Originality/value

This hierarchical approach is proposed to make trajectory prediction accurately both in the short term and long term, which can also deal with the uncertainties caused by the perception system or indeterminate vehicle behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce new economic psychology theories that can explain fraud, misconduct and non-compliance that may arise from the implementation and enforcement of accounting standards codification (ASC) 805/350, international financial reporting standards (IFRS) 3R and IAS-38.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is entirely theoretical. The paper analyzes existing theories about real options and enforcement of regulations/statutes, and introduces new psychological biases that can arise.

Findings

The real options approach suggested for handling the enforcement of goodwill/intangibles regulations is not effective.

Research limitations/implications

The research is limited to international accounting standards board (IASB)/IFRS and financial accounting standards board (FASB) accounting standards.

Originality/value

The critiques and theories developed in the paper can be used in the analysis of selection of disputes for litigation, anti-corruption programs and regulation of transactions that are susceptible to fraud.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether rising air pollution impacts cryptocurrency returns across different categories.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses panel regression to investigate the impact of air pollution on cryptocurrencies between January 2014 and June 2023. Cryptocurrency prices are sourced from www.coinmarketcap.com. Air quality is measured using the air quality index (AQI) values provided by the World Air Quality Index Project. Generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators for dynamic panel regression have also been used to control for endogeneity concerns.

Findings

High AQI levels are observed to negatively affect cryptocurrency returns. This impact remains absent during good air quality and for cryptocurrencies with lower energy consumption like stablecoins, clean energy and health cryptocurrencies, supporting the argument that rising air pollution leads to lower returns for cryptocurrencies more prone to damaging the environment.

Practical implications

The findings of this study could offer investors valuable insights in formulating more efficient cryptocurrency trading strategies. It also demonstrates how environmental variables influence the performance of volatile assets like cryptocurrencies. The presence of lower returns for currencies perceived as damaging to the environment could put the focus on promoting sustainability in the production of such digital currencies.

Originality/value

No prior study has investigated the influence of AQI on cryptocurrency returns. This study aims to focus on the behavioral aspect of financial decision-making. As cryptocurrency adoption rates rise across the globe, the findings of this study can provide useful insights to cryptocurrency traders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse recommendations made in domestic homicide reviews (DHRs) in England relating to adult safeguarding – largely focussing on those aged 66+ − to identify key areas for learning and how equality, diversity and inclusion issues (EDI) are considered in DHRs.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed methods approach was used to analyse 24 DHRs spanning 2015–2018. A qualitative template was created to extract information, followed by a critical thematic analysis. A quantitative matrix was then developed, enabling a descriptive quantitative analysis, identifying the most prevalent types of recommendations. An additional descriptive quantitative analysis of the 24 DHRs was undertaken for context.

Findings

Intimate partner homicide comprised half the homicides (12); adult family homicide comprised 11; and one homicide was an amicicide. DHRs recommended improvements in: information management/multi-agency working (83%); targeted domestic abuse training (67%); developing/abiding by policies (67%); enhancing professional practice (54%); improved domestic abuse risk and carers assessments (50%). EDI was seldom considered.

Originality/value

New analysis is provided on the different types and contexts of domestic homicides involving older adults, the need for strengthened guidance regarding DA and adult safeguarding, tailored DA training and challenging “blind spots” relating to ageist assumptions, the invisibility of familial abuse, a lack of service oversight where care is self-funded and limited consideration of EDI.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter uses Goffman’s concept of total institutions in a comparative case study approach to explore the role of psychotropic drugs in the process of transinstitutionalization.

Methodology/approach

This chapter interprets psychotropic drug use across four institutionalized contexts in the United States: the active-duty U.S. military, nursing homes and long-term care facilities, state and federal prisons, and the child welfare system.

Findings

This chapter documents a major unintended consequence of transinstitutionalization – the questionable distribution of psychotropics among vulnerable populations. The patterns of psychotropic use we synthesize suggest that total institutions are engaging in ethically and medically questionable practices and that psychotropics are being used to serve the bureaucratic imperatives for social control in the era of transinstitutionalization.

Practical implications

Psychotropic prescribing practices require close surveillance and increased scrutiny in institutional settings in the United States. The flows of mentally ill people through a vast network of total institutions raises questions about the wisdom and unintended consequences of psychotropic distribution to vulnerable populations, despite health policy makers’ efforts regulating their distribution. Medical sociologists must examine trans-institutional power arrangements that converge around the mental health of vulnerable groups.

Originality/value

This is the first synthesis and interpretive review of psychotropic use patterns across institutional systems in the United States. This chapter will be of value to medical sociologists, mental health professionals and administrators, pharmacologists, health system pharmacists, and sociological theorists.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the current state of employee training practices in a sample of Iranian‐based organisations.

Design/methodology/approach

The research approach adopted for the study conforms to qualitative research in the form of multiple case study design. Semi‐structured interview is adopted to collect qualitative data. To enhance the validity of the information derived from the interviews, the interview data are supplemented by some observations and examination of the related documents.

Findings

Data from managers and employees from different functional areas support a capital approach to employee training. The results further indicate that the current approach to training has an upward impact on employee turnover. Overall, the data suggest that the effect of training on employee motivation and productivity is indirect through management's approach and orientation towards training. This, in turn, causes a gap between employee's expectation and perception toward the effectiveness of organisational training.

Research limitations/implications

There is no sufficient evidence to correlate directly the contribution of training programmes to the overall performance of both employee and organisation. The need for more empirical data should focus on more rigorous testing of the implications of the current state of training interventions for other human resource management practices.

Practical implications

There is a fundamental need for the Iranian managers, first, to reconsider their understanding of and rationale for training interventions; second, to realise the increased importance of employee training in achieving sustainable competitive advantage in the long term; third, to encourage employees to recognise their training needs; and last and fourth, to recognise the importance of employee training in enhancing organisational commitment. In respect of the management of international companies wishing to exploit business opportunities in Iran, there is a need on their part to know the Iranian culture, its difference from other Middle Eastern countries, and therefore to overcome such existing cross‐cultural challenges.

Originality/value

The degree to which the adoption of training strategies reflects new and different attitudes and practices among the non‐managerial employees is seen to be a major shortcoming of previous research. This study addresses such limitation by collecting data from multiple perspectives in the novel context of the Middle East with a particular focus on Iran.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly within the last decade and the application of ‘deep learning’, has simultaneously accelerated human fears of the changes AI provokes in human behaviour. The question is not any more if the new phenomena, like artificially-induced consciousness, empathy or creation, will be widely used, but whether they will be used in ethically acceptable ways and for ethically acceptable purposes.

Departing from a diagnosis of the state humans have brought themselves to by (ab)use of technology, the present chapter investigates the possibility of a systematic study of adaptations human society will have to consider in order to guarantee the obeyance to the fundamental ethical values and thus its spiritual survival. To that end, a new discipline – epharmology (from the Greek epharmozein = to adapt) is proposed, together with its aims and methodology.
