Abstract

Suggests that research has identified psychological barriers between information professionals and enquirers, and emphasized the need for training institutions to include courses on interpersonal relations, non‐verbal behaviour and counselling skills. Describes student experience in the module “The information enquiry process” at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Identifies and discusses a number of significant factors which interrelate in providing an effective information enquiry service. During their period of professional work experience prior to the module, LJMU students are encouraged to note details of the broader environment, non‐verbal behaviour, aspects of professional competence and methods of evaluation which relate to customer service and customer satisfaction in the enquiry process. These broad issues provide the academic framework of the module in which practical problems are addressed in video‐recorded workshops.

Abstract

Governments over the 1990s have been moving towards public accountability and accessibility of official information. Based on a seminar presentation and workshop at Liverpool John Moores University, examines the extent of the development of United Kingdom (UK) national and local government and European Union (EU) official information on the World Wide Web from the perspective of the ordinary citizen. Focuses on the access points of the award‐winning Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) Government Information Service and the Europa pages with particular focus on the UK parliament, HMSO and The Stationery Office, and the UK European Commission sites. Findings from a small‐scale study of four UK local government sites suggest that much more information needs to be mounted to meet expectations, whereas national and supranational government sites are quite advanced in the information provision.

Abstract

There are few aspects of modern life which remain unaffected by the governances of the European Community (EC), and people need to be informed. Before CD‐ROM technology, access to EC information had been comparatively difficult for information workers outside specialist EC centres. Information specialists of the 1990s, in contrast, have a choice of several CD‐ROM products in this field. To help facilitate the selection process, presents an overview and appraisal of a range of these CD‐ROMs, featuring EC Infodisk and the Justis series of databases. Each product contains some information which overlaps with that of another, yet each has its unique attributes. It is important to be aware of the alternatives available, and to evaluate them against EC information sources in other formats when making a selection on a restricted budget.

Abstract

Tuesday, 7 September 1993 and I am experiencing the different levels of investment by British Rail on its West Coast and East Coast routes as I travel from the North‐West of England to the University of Hertfordshire at Hatfield for the ninth International Library Technology Fair (renamed from this year as Libtech International). Catching up with the Times Higher Education Supplement of 20 August on the train I am pleasantly surprised to see a note about Libtech '93 and Hans Geleijnse's guest lecture on page 20.
