Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a high-performance composite emulsion cement waterproof coating. The coating has excellent durability and is effective in protecting cement mortar substrates from harmful ions.

Design/methodology/approach

The polymer cement waterproof coatings with different emulsion compounding ratios were tested for mechanical properties and water resistance after alkali immersion, water immersion, thermal aging and UV aging, and the coatings were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy after aging to evaluate its durability. Meanwhile, the coating that presents favorable durability was applied to cement mortar test blocks. The protective effect of the coating on the test blocks was tested by immersion method, and X-ray diffraction analysis was performed on the eroded test blocks.

Findings

The coating with neoprene latex/acrylate latex weight ratio of 90/10 presents favorable durability and has superior overall performance. Besides, when it is applied to cement mortar blocks, the coatings effectively reduced the erosive effect of harmful ions on cement mortar blocks, resulting in much lower mass change ratios and less internal structural damage of the blocks significantly.

Originality/value

The obtained coating will be of great application potential for use in building waterproofing construction. Moreover, the coating can practically prevent chloride ions and sulfate ions from penetrating cement-based materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design a wearable medical device as a human care platform and to introduce the design details, key technologies and practical implementation methods of the system.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-channel data acquisition scheme based on PCI-E (rapid interconnection of peripheral components) was proposed. The flexible biosensor is integrated with the flexible data acquisition card with monitoring capability, and the embedded (device that can operate independently) chip STM32F103VET6 is used to realize the simultaneous processing of multi-channel human health parameters. The human health parameters were transferred to the upper computer LabVIEW by intelligent clothing through USB or wireless Bluetooth to complete the transmission and processing of clinical data, which facilitates the analysis of medical data.

Findings

The smart clothing provides a mobile medical cloud platform for wearable medical through cloud computing, which can continuously monitor the body's wrist movement, body temperature and perspiration for 24 h. The result shows that each channel is completely accurate to the top computer display, which can meet the expected requirements, and the wearable instant care system can be applied to healthcare.

Originality/value

The smart clothing in this study is based on the monitoring and diagnosis of textiles, and the electronic communication devices can cooperate and interact to form a wearable textile system that provides medical monitoring and prevention services to individuals in the fastest and most accurate way. Each channel of the system is precisely matched to the display screen of the host computer and meets the expected requirements. As a real-time human health protection platform technology, continuous monitoring of human vital signs can complete the application of human motion detection, medical health monitoring and human–computer interaction. Ultimately, such an intelligent garment will become an integral part of our everyday clothing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to seek a new economic and environmental protection fuel tank inerting method.

Design/methodology/approach

The principle that serves as the basis for the cooling inerting process is described, the workflow of the cooling inerting system is designed, the mathematical model of the cooling inerting system is established, and the important performance changes of cooling inerting in the flight package line and the influence of key parameters on it are simulated by using Modelica software.

Findings

The results show that the cooling inerting system can be turned on to quickly reduce the vapour concentration in the gas phase in the fuel space and reduce the temperature below the flammability limit. Within a certain range of pumping flow, the inerting effect is more obvious when the pumping flow is larger. Simply running the cooling inerting system on the ground can remain the tank in an inert state throughout the flight envelope.

Research limitations/implications

However, cooling inerting is suitable for models with fewer internal heat sources. An excessive number of internal heat sources will lead to inerting failure.

Originality/value

This study provides theoretical support for the feasibility of cooling inerting. Cooling inerting does not require engine air, and the cooling is mainly accomplished with air, which places a small load on the cooling system and has a much lower cost than the airborne hollow fibre film inerting technology widely used at present. It is a promising new inerting technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Examination of steel moment resisting frames after the 1994 Northridge earthquake showed fatigue cracks presented in the beam–column connections of the frames. These observations indicate that fatigue failure may occur in the steel components of building structures in an earthquake event. To apply the fatigue design approach using the Palmgren–Miner’s rule for steel components of the moment resisting frames requires the knowledge regarding the damage index value at fatigue failure. The purpose of this paper is to perform fatigue tests to give the first damage values of steel components subjected to real earthquake-induced loadings.

Design/methodology/approach

The added-damping-and-stiffness steel plates which are used in building structures for earthquake mitigation were fabricated and tested by constant amplitude, SAC block and earthquake-induced loadings to failure. The earthquake loadings were obtained from the dynamic analysis of a steel frame with the mentioned plates. The load cycles of the SAC block and the calculated earthquake loadings were counted using the rainflow-counting method, and the damage index value of each specimen were calculated using the Palmgren–Miner’s rule.

Findings

Reverse stiffness obtained from cyclic load-displacement loops is a robust and consistent parameter that can be used for determining fatigue failure of tested components. The Palmgren–Miner’s damage values at failure, caused by earthquake loadings, are smaller than 1, and in addition, are also smaller than those obtained from the tests of the SAC block loading. The large-amplitude cycles in the earthquake loading produce large damage on the specimens, and intermediate range cycles also produce damage that should not be neglected in the fatigue analysis.

Originality/value

Today’s building design code allows large plastic deformation to occur in steel frames during an earthquake. However, the pre-Northridge earthquake steel frames showed fatigue cracks without the expected substantial plastic deformation at beam flanges. Proposed solutions to this problem were the reduced beam section neglecting the existence of the cracks at beam–column connections. This study considered the fatigue phenomenon in steel frames and provided the first set of tested fatigue damage values for steel components subjected to realistic earthquake loadings, which offered a possible method of dealing with fatigue cracks in the steel components of a building structure.

Subject area

This case describes a real-time crisis experienced by the co-founder (Mr Yang) of a multi-national Chinese company operating in Vietnam during the 2014 Vietnam riot. After the strike broke out, Mr Yang made several critical decisions to protect and save both his factory and employees.

Study level/applicability

This case is applicable to graduate-level management courses such as: Business ethics, Decision-making, Business Communication and Cross-Cultural Management. Students should have some knowledge in Decision-Making concepts (e.g. “bounded rationality”); in Cross-Cultural Management concepts (e.g. “culture norms”); and in Strategic management theory such as “institution-based view” (e.g. formal vs informal institutions).

Case overview

Part A of the case introduces the main character (Mr Yang) and his factory in Vietnam, the escalation of the strike and the course of the crisis. It also elaborates the important critical decisions Mr Yang made to save both his factory and employees. Part B of the case describes the rescue of Mr Yang and his Chinese employees, his actions after the crisis and strategic positioning in future business. Part C of the case introduces the aftermath of the riot and Mr Yang's reflection regarding the crisis.

Expected learning outcomes

The instructors may emphasize different learning objectives in different courses. Business Ethics: help the students learn to recognize, clarify, speak and act on their values when conflicts arise. Decision-Making: helps the students understand the logic of sense-making in crisis and the concept of bounded rationality. Abstract

Prior research on political strategies has predominantly analyzed singular political activities or drivers for firms to become politically active and, overall, only scarcely obtained insights on performance consequences of political strategizing. To further develop the realm of political strategy, this study analyzes the effects of two “generic” political strategies on firms’ (1) stakeholder network development and (2) performance. Specifically, we provide theoretical and empirical evidence whether the two political strategies add to or substitute each other in their effect on the corresponding outcome variable. We find that an information strategy significantly affects the stakeholder network development, whereas no influence of a financial incentive strategy could be detected. Moreover, we find that the stakeholder network drives firm performance and, more importantly, that the two political strategies substitute each other in their effect on firm performance. Thus, we provide initial insights on the efficiency of political strategies when firms opt to execute an information strategy and financial incentive strategy simultaneously. The results of our study have important implications for research as they put a new light on the efficiency of political strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper assess the impact of the green finance pilot reform on corporate green innovation, leveraging the establishment of the China green finance pilot reform in 2018 as a quasi-natural experiment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study investigates the effects of environmental policies on green innovation, utilising a substantial data set from Chinese A-share listed firms over the 2015–2019 period. Employing both double and triple difference models, it focuses on how tax reforms influence green patent filings among these firms.

Findings

The study confirms that environmental tax policies and green finance initiatives significantly boost green patent filings in pollution-intensive industries. Findings from the regression analysis show robust positive effects from these policies, supporting the idea that stringent environmental regulations can spur innovation by offsetting regulatory costs. Financial health indicators like asset logs and return on assets positively correlated with innovation, emphasising the importance of financial stability. In addition, increased RandD spending is linked to enhanced green innovation, highlighting that financial investment in research is crucial for overcoming innovation barriers. These insights are crucial for shaping policies that integrate sustainability into corporate practices.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature by highlighting traditional views on the economic burden of environmental taxes and demonstrating their role as significant drivers of innovation. It deepens insights into strategically optimising fiscal tools to promote environmentally sustainable economic activities. In addition, it offers a practical framework for policymakers to improve ecological outcomes through effective fiscal strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the film industry has underscored the growing significance of online movies. However, there is limited research available on the factors that influence the viewership of online films. Therefore, this study aims to use the signaling theory to investigate how signals of varying qualities affect online movie viewership, considering both signal transmission costs and prices.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a sample of 1,071 online movies released on the iQiyi from July 2020 to July 2022. It uses OLS regression and instrumental variable method to examine the impact of various quality indicators on the viewership of online movies, as well as the moderating effect of price.

Findings

After conducting a thorough analysis of this study, it can be deduced that the varying impacts on online movie viewership are attributed to disparities in signal transmission costs. Specifically, star influence and rating exhibit a positive effect on the viewership of online movies, whereas the number of raters has a detrimental impact. Furthermore, there exists an “inverted U-shaped” relationship between the number of reviews and online movie viewership. Additionally, within the consumer decision-making process, both price-cost and price-quality relationships coexist. This is evident as prices negatively affect online movie viewership but positively moderate the relationship between rating, number of reviews and online movie viewership.

Originality/value

The research findings of this study offer valuable insights for online film producers to effectively leverage quality signals and pricing, thereby capturing market attention and enhancing film profitability.

Abstract

Purpose

Framing by dual concern theory (DCT), this study aims to examine how personality traits influence conflict resolution strategies and their impact on fascination and relationship maintenance among romantic partners within the unique context of romantic travel. By focusing on the influence of the travel environment, this research explores how shared travel experiences may alter typical relationship dynamics.

Design/methodology/approach

Using composite-based structural model analysis and importance–performance map analysis (IPMA), the study prioritizes factors contributing to relationship quality, with a specific focus on how the travel environment shapes gender differences in conflict resolution preferences. IPMA ranks these traits and strategies based on their impact on fascination and relationship maintenance in a travel context. Data were collected from romantic partners during travel and analyzed for gender-specific trends.

Findings

The findings reveal that personality traits, particularly openness, play a critical role in shaping conflict resolution strategies such as integrating, obliging and compromising, which in turn enhance fascination and relationship maintenance. Factors such as openness should be prioritized for their significant impact on relationship quality, especially among women, while integrating, agreeableness and obliging are likely to be more influential among men. In addition, the study highlights gender differences in conflict resolution preferences and their impact on relationship dynamics.

Originality/value

This study extends DCT by demonstrating how the romantic tourism environment influences established relationship dynamics, particularly the role of personality traits in conflict resolution. It offers novel insights into how travel settings affect the maintenance of romantic relationships, revealing that relationship practices can shift during travel. Practically, tourism practitioners and destination marketers can leverage these findings by designing romantic travel experiences that foster collaborative conflict resolution and address gender-specific needs. Policymakers are encouraged to create supportive environments for romantic travelers, enhancing satisfaction and relational outcomes.

Objetivo

Enmarcado en la teoría de la doble preocupación, este estudio examina cómo los rasgos de personalidad influyen en las estrategias de resolución de conflictos y su impacto en la fascinación y el mantenimiento de la relación entre parejas románticas dentro del contexto único de los viajes románticos. Al centrarse en la influencia del entorno del viaje, esta investigación explora cómo las experiencias de viaje compartidas pueden alterar la dinámica típica de las relaciones.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Mediante el análisis de modelos estructurales basados en composiciones y el Análisis de Mapas de Importancia-Rendimiento (IPMA), el estudio prioriza los factores que contribuyen a la calidad de las relaciones, centrándose específicamente en cómo el entorno del viaje determina las diferencias de género en las preferencias de resolución de conflictos. El IPMA clasifica estos rasgos y estrategias en función de su impacto en la fascinación y el mantenimiento de la relación en un contexto de viaje. Se recogieron datos de parejas románticas durante el viaje y se analizaron en busca de tendencias específicas de género.

Resultados

Los resultados revelan que los rasgos de personalidad, en particular la apertura, desempeñan un papel fundamental en la conformación de estrategias de resolución de conflictos como la integración, la obligación y el compromiso, que a su vez potencian la fascinación y el mantenimiento de la relación. Factores como la apertura deberían ser prioritarios por su impacto significativo en la calidad de las relaciones, especialmente entre las mujeres, mientras que la integración, la complacencia y la actitud servicial son probablemente más influyentes entre los hombres. Además, el estudio destaca las diferencias de género en las preferencias de resolución de conflictos y su impacto en la dinámica de las relaciones.

Originalidad

Este estudio amplía la teoría de la doble preocupación al demostrar cómo el entorno turístico romántico influye en la dinámica de las relaciones establecidas, en particular en el papel de los rasgos de personalidad en la resolución de conflictos. Ofrece nuevas perspectivas sobre cómo el entorno del viaje afecta al mantenimiento de las relaciones románticas, revelando que las prácticas relacionales pueden cambiar durante el viaje. En la práctica, los profesionales del turismo y los comercializadores de destinos pueden aprovechar estos resultados para diseñar experiencias de viajes románticos que fomenten la resolución colaborativa de conflictos y aborden las necesidades específicas de cada sexo. Se anima a los responsables políticos a crear entornos propicios para los viajeros románticos, mejorando la satisfacción y los resultados relacionales.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates lecturers’ challenges in guiding students’ final scientific work online during the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores the impact of lecturers’ digital technology proficiency on the students’ ability to compile their thoughts and produce scientific work independently.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved 45 lecturers and 140 students. Data was collected through online surveys using the Google Forms application and focus group discussions. The data were analysed qualitatively and interpretively based on the surveys and interviews.

Findings

The findings reveal three modes of mentoring: online, mixed, and offline. Many lecturers’ reluctance to use digital technology for mentoring stems from their lack of proficiency, resulting in mixed mentoring methods. This digital inadequacy affects students’ ability to write scientific work independently, as they are not accustomed to self-directed learning. The pandemic has necessitated more independent work from students, with limited physical guidance from lecturers, leading to a decline in the quality of scientific writing.

Originality/value

This paper contains the latest information related to students' scientific writing activities. Student scientific writing activities are disrupted because supervisors do not have the skills to use technology in the remote student mentoring process. Lecturers are not skilled at using technology in carrying out online tutoring assignments.
