Abstract

Multinational firms account at present (1976) for almost 15% of the aggregate gross national products of the western world; their total foreign investments are in excess of 320 billion dollars and the aggregate market value of the foreign assets under their control is very likely about four to five times as large. The value of these assets is affected by various risks, i.e. the probability of a loss, that can be broadly classified as economic and political risks. This separation is certainly open to question since there can exist a close interdependency between the factors that constitute economic and political risks. A distinction is, nevertheless, appropriate since political risks stem from changes in (assumed) policy positions whereas economic risks are associated with changes concerning market, competitive, and technological factors that diminish the firm's effectiveness and profit potential. In addition, the factors responsible for political risks becoming an actuality are more easily identified than those forces which are responsible for the economic risks becoming an actuality.

Abstract

This study focuses on the ethical conduct of multinational enterprises. Based on investigations and revelations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) involving about two hundred multinational firms, the study summarises some of the factual material on unethical conduct, and stresses the necessity to differentiate between multinational firms that initiate unethical practices, and those that simply become victims of extortive demands. The largest part of the study deals with specific proposals which have been advocated as means to correct unethical practices by multi‐national firms: (a) international agreements on corrupt practices; (b) unilateral restrictive legislation; (c) regulatory measures by administrative agencies; (d) inter‐governmental agreements on codes of conduct; and (e) corporate codes of conduct as affirmation of company policies on ethical issues.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Purpose

Corruptive behaviour penetrates the business process itself and permeates the mental attitude of decision makers on all hierarchy levels. This paper seeks to present the special legal situation in Germany as the regulatory environment for business transactions and to discuss the moral consequences of an “economy of greed”.

Design/methodology/approach

The moral aspects of corruption are treated from an institutional ethics viewpoint as well as an individual ethics perspective. Regarding the institutional aspects (compliance approach) reliance is placed on the empirical study of ethical conflicts of companies in Germany and the USA. The individual ethics perspective is derived from a Christian understanding of man's personal responsibility in society.

Findings

A compliance approach can only serve as a necessary first step to counteract fraud and corruption. To obtain a good corporate citizen status, a company should also develop an open dialogue with all stakeholders (integrity management approach).

Research limitations/implications

The concept of quasi‐regulation, which combines governmental legal aspects with a company‐wide good corporate citizen approach, offers a viable concept and needs further empirical research.

Practical implications

This paper proposes to restore the concept of an honourable entrepreneur. Decision makers should pursue personal authenticity, fairness, and mutual trust in their relations with others.

Originality/value

Preventing corporate corruption requires a new way of thinking based on a loyal attitude and the personal commitment of leaders.

Abstract

Online bibliographic searching is offered as a solution for classifying the proliferating and diverse research prevalent in the field of international business. Introductory comments discuss the rationale for such action while guidelines are set forth that describe the methodological elements such as the categories of terminology, database selection and search strategy. Included too are suggestions for alternative methods of conducting a bibliographic search on the topic.

Abstract

Theories on international trade and investment as well as those relating the nature of the product to the length of the channel suggest that mode of entry decisions should result from the analysis of a wide variety of factors. The purpose of this article is to show how such theories might be related to practice through the development of decision support tools. Emphasis is given to a microcomputer software package developed to aid international mode of entry assessment.

Abstract

This articles provides a managerial framework to examine and analyse factors that may influence government decision making in less developed countries. In order to market successfully to these buyers, a series of hurdles has to be cleared. These include meeting eligibility, following procedures, establishing critical linkages, developing competitive offers and exerting appropriate influence. International firms can enhance their success and profits by taking a serious, long‐term approach to these markets.

This study aims to develop conceptual arguments about intrapreneurship relative to role theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop conceptual arguments about intrapreneurship relative to role theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The challenge to the intrapreneurship concept is that no single or combination of personality traits, individual characteristics or attitudes can fulfill the causes of the phenomenon, as these factors are context-bound. One explanation for individual- and macro-level contrasting outcomes is the diverging effect of expectations. The structural and interactionist perspective of sociology is used to understand the intrapreneurship concept because intrapreneurs live within a society and shape their course per the expectations of others.

Findings

Intrapreneurs have been trying to infer about what is seen as crucial individually related to interactions within the existing context; more importantly, acting in an intrapreneurship role can be defined and learned by expectations.

Practical implications

With the convenient expectations from other members, families or environments, organization members will value the innovation and self-direction of intrapreneurship more highly that such a taste for an acting role may be an important factor in the decision to become an intrapreneur.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the paper emphasized for the first time that the consequences of exposure to social expectations for the development of intrapreneur roles, particularly the broad portfolios of skills and motivation, are relevant to intrapreneurship. Previous approaches depend on individuals, organizations or the environment to have different approaches to likely employees to be intrapreneurs. The paper first argues that context is important for understanding how and why context can be linked to individual intrapreneurs and how intrapreneurship can be defined as roles rather than a task or unique potential entrepreneurs.

Abstract

This article is concerned with four major propositions: 1) The next major thrust in long‐range planning will come in the public sector, and is a thrust long overdue. 2) Over the past two decades we have significantly improved corporate planning in the private sector. We still have much to learn, but compared with the early efforts we are now high on the learning curve. 3) The fundamental lessons we have learned in the private sector in doing comprehensive long‐range planning are applicable to the introduction, development, and success of aggregate integrated long‐range planning in the public sector. 4) It is imperative that a dialogue begin immediately between practitioners of long‐range planning in the private sector and those in the public sector who are directly involved in the development of this process. Both groups have much to learn from each other, but it is particularly important that those in the public sector be exposed to the first‐hand experience of those in the private sector.
