Design/methodology/approach

The paper designs a mathematical model to simulate human motion, calculate the coordinate trajectory, then implement with two SCARA robots.

Findings

The two-robot testing platform for wrist band is an effective and precise simulation method and is feasible to deploy in mass production.

Originality/value

The paper introduces a way for apply robots in wearing product lifetime testing which is novel, practical and effective.

Abstract

Purpose

To improve the electrochemical corrosion resistance of cold sprayed Al coating.

Design/methodology/approach

A cold sprayed aluminum (Al) coating fabricated on S355 structural steel was oxidized using a micro arc oxidation (MAO). The electrochemical corrosion and impedance spectroscopy were tested to investigate its corrosion performance.

Findings

The MAO film is primarily α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3, which increases its density and surface quality. The corrosion potential is positively shifted by 0.2 V, and the electrochemical impedance is significantly increased.

Originality/value

A cold sprayed Al coating on S355 steel was first oxidized using a MAO. The effects of MAO on the microstructure of Al coating were investigated to analyze its electrochemical corrosion behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of micro-nano mixed super-hydrophobic structure on corrosion resistance and mechanism of magnesium alloys.

Design/methodology/approach

A super-hydrophobic surface was fabricated on AZ91 and WE43 magnesium alloys by laser etching and micro-arc oxidation (MAO) with SiO2 nanoparticles coating and low surface energy material modification. The corrosion resistance properties of the prepared super-hydrophobic surfaces were studied based on polarization curves and immersion tests.

Findings

Compared with bare substrates, the corrosion resistance of super-hydrophobic surfaces was improved significantly. The corrosion resistance of super-hydrophobic surface is related to micro-nano composite structure, static contact angle and pretreatment method. The more uniform the microstructure and the larger the static contact angle, the better the corrosion resistance of the super-hydrophobic surface. The corrosion resistance of super-hydrophobic by MAO is better than that of laser machining. Corrosion of super-hydrophobic surface can be divided into air valley action, physical shielding, pretreatment layer action and substrate corrosion.

Originality/value

The super-hydrophobic coatings can reduce the contact of matrix with water so that a super-hydrophobic coating would be an effective way for magnesium alloy anti-corrosion. Therefore, the corrosion resistance properties and mechanism of the prepared super-hydrophobic magnesium alloys were investigated in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare electrochemical corrosion characteristics of conventional and unconventional fluoride conversion coating prepared on magnesium alloy.

Design/methodology/approach

The chemical reaction of AZ61 with 38 wt.% hydrofluoric acid (HF) for 24 h was used as a conventional way of fluoride conversion coating preparation. The unconventionally prepared coating was created in Na[BF4] salt melt at 450°C for 2 h. Morphology and chemical composition of prepared fluoride conversion coatings were studied with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Electrochemical corrosion characteristics of the coatings were analyzed in Hank’s solution using potentiodynamic tests.

Findings

Both the coating preparation ways resulted in the creation of uniform conversion coatings with the same thickness (1.3 ± 0.1 μm). Some defects were observed on the coatings surface; however, the defects did not reach the AZ61 surface. Electrochemical tests performed in Hank’s solution at 37°C showed an improvement of corrosion resistance of AZ61 treated with fluoride conversion coatings when compared to the untreated material. Unconventionally prepared coating reached better electrochemical corrosion characteristics when compared to the conventionally prepared coating.

Originality/value

Electrochemical corrosion characteristics of AZ61 magnesium alloy can be improved with fluoride conversion coatings. Two methods are used in the literature for the coatings preparation. The conventional method is based on dipping of the coated material to the HF, and the unconventional method lies in dipping of the sample to the Na[BF4] salt melt. The main purpose of the present study is to analyze the conventionally and unconventionally prepared coatings in terms of chemical analysis, morphology and material corrosion protection (electrochemical corrosion characteristics), while the data are not provided in the literature, according to the authors’ knowledge. Very similar coatings were prepared using both the methods from the morphological and chemical composition point of view. However, unconventionally prepared coating created in Na[BF4] salt melt reached better electrochemical corrosion characteristics compared to the coating prepared in HF.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine peer-to-peer sharing platform business models, their sources of competitive advantage, and the roles, motivations and behaviors of key actors in their ecosystems.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a conceptual approach that is rooted in the service, tourism and hospitality, and strategy literature.

Findings

First, this paper defines key types of platform business models in the sharing economy anddescribes their characteristics. In particular, the authors propose the differentiation between sharing platforms of capacity-constrained vs capacity-unconstrained assets and advance five core properties of the former. Second, the authors contrast platform business models with their pipeline business model counterparts to understand the fundamental differences between them. One important conclusion is that platforms cater to vastly more heterogeneous assets and consumer needs and, therefore, require liquidity and analytics for high-quality matching. Third, the authors examine the competitive position of platforms and conclude that their widely taken “winner takes it all” assumption is not valid. Primary network effects are less important once a critical level of liquidity has been reached and may even turn negative if increased listings raise friction in the form of search costs. Once a critical level of liquidity has been reached, a platform’s competitive position depends on stakeholder trust and service provider and user loyalty. Fourth, the authors integrate and synthesize the literature on key platform stakeholders of platform businesses (i.e. users, service providers, and regulators) and their roles and motivations. Finally, directions for further research are advanced.

Practical implications

This paper helps platform owners, service providers and users understand better the implications of sharing platform business models and how to position themselves in such ecosystems.

Originality/value

This paper integrates the extant literature on sharing platforms, takes a novel approach in delineating their key properties and dimensions, and provides insights into the evolving and dynamic forms of sharing platforms including converging business models.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use equity theory to develop and test a model of the dynamics of service recovery in the homesharing context.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of those who have experienced a service failure with a homesharing company and have voiced complaints to the company directly, the study adopted alternative model comparison procedures to test three competing models of service recovery and examined the effects of five moderating variables.

Findings

The results indicated that the model based on equity theory provides a theoretically and empirically superior explanation of the dynamics of service recovery in the homesharing context than the alternative explanation based on the tenets of justice theory. The two key inputs into the service recovery interaction – consumer complaining and recovery effort and trust in brand – have significant direct effects on post-failure loyalty outcomes, and also significant indirect effects via the mediating mechanism of perceived justice. All five moderators have significant effects for at least one of the post-failure loyalty outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

The findings emphasize the company’s role in service recovery in the homesharing context. Managers of homesharing platforms need to establish customer service infrastructure that minimizes the amount of time-related, procedural and cognitive effort that customers need to expend in the recovery process, and effect communication that enhances trust in the homesharing brand. Future research is needed on the dynamics of service recovery in alternative hotel-homesharing business models, and on the role of value co-creation in the homesharing context.

Originality/value

This study is the first to create a holistic theory-based model of the dynamics of service recovery in the homesharing context, using the novel construct of customer complaining and recovery effort. Also, and contrary to typical conceptualization, it demonstrates the role of trust in brand as an antecedent input into the recovery interaction that can generate loyalty outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to examine travelers’ attitudinal and behavioral loyalty to the product type of peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodations (as opposed to a brand).

Design/methodology/approach

P2P accommodations’ hosts provided contact information for their guests from the prior two years who were contacted to participate in the study. Respondents answered questions about their travel party, trip purpose, factors leading to their P2P accommodation stay and attitudinal and behavioral loyalty around P2P lodging.

Findings

Autonomous motivators (dislike of big hotel chains and experience authenticity) and controlled motivators (location and cooking facilities) were positively related to attitudinal loyalty to P2P accommodations. Price predicted behavioral loyalty in the form of repeat purchase behavior and attitudinal loyalty did not.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations of this study include the representativeness and size of the sample, the generalizability of the results, cross-sectional nature of the data and respondents’ recall ability. Despite a favorable attitude toward P2P accommodations, only price accounted for travelers’ repeated choice of P2P accommodations over hotels.

Practical implications

While attitudinal loyalty was explained by the dislike of big hotel chains and experience authenticity in P2P accommodations, it did not translate into repeated purchase behavior. Behavioral loyalty to P2P seems all about price, which begs the question of whether price is the most meaningful competitive lever in the battle between conventional hotels and P2P.

Originality/value

Hotel brand loyalty refers to consumer choice of brand within the conventional hotel product type. This study presents the first effort to understand consumer loyalty to a lodging product type, specifically P2P accommodations, and not a particular brand.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of ZnO on the structure and properties of micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating on rare earth magnesium alloy under large concentration gradient.

Design/methodology/approach

The macroscopic and microscopic morphology, thickness, surface roughness, chemical composition and structure of the coating were characterized by different characterization methods. The corrosion resistance of the film was studied by electrochemical and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy. The results show that the addition of ZnO can significantly improve the compactness and corrosion resistance of the MAO coating, but the high concentration of ZnO will cause microcracks, which will reduce the corrosion resistance to a certain extent.

Findings

When the concentration of zinc oxide is 8 g/L, the compactness and corrosion resistance of the coating are the best, and the thickness of the coating is positively correlated with the concentration of ZnO.

Research limitations/implications

Too high concentration of ZnO reduces the performance of MAO coating.

Practical implications

The MAO coating prepared by adding ZnO has good corrosion resistance. Combined with organic coatings, it can be applied in corrosive marine environments, such as ship parts and hulls. To a certain extent, it can reduce the economic loss caused by corrosion.

Originality/value

The effect of ZnO on the corrosion resistance of MAO coating in electrolyte solution was studied systematically, and the conclusion was new to the common knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

The impact of rolling on the performance of micro arc oxidation (MAO) coatings on ZM5 alloy has been underreported. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between rolling and the failure mechanism of MAO coatings in greater depth.

Design/methodology/approach

The influence of rolling on the corrosion and wear properties of MAO coating was investigated by phase structure, bond strength test (initial bond strength and wet adhesion), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and wear test. The change of the surface electrochemical properties was studied by first principles analysis.

Findings

The results showed that the MAO coating on rolled alloy had better corrosion and wear resistance compared to cast alloy, although the structure and component content of two kinds of MAO coating are nearly identical. The difference in interface bonding between MAO coating and Mg substrate is the primary factor contributing to the disparity in performance between the two types of samples. Finally, the impact of the rolling process on MAO coating properties is explained through first-principle calculation.

Originality/value

A comprehensive explanation of the impact of the rolling process on MAO coating properties will provide substantial support for enhancing the application of Mg alloy anticorrosion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand Indian tourists’ perceptions of Airbnb compared to other hospitality options, and the factors driving their purchase intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

An integrated model for purchase intention was conceptualized based on the theory of planned behavior and social exchange theory. Constructs such as trust, authenticity, travel innovativeness, price sensitivity and effort expectancy were included based on a survey of the literature. Structural equation models were built using survey data. Respondent ranking of different criteria for Airbnb vs its competitors were aggregated using Borda count method.

Findings

Price is the most important criteria across hospitality choices, including Airbnb, except high-end hotels. Facilities, home-like feeling, trust and friendly service were important for Airbnb. Consumer expectations from Airbnb are similar to homestays, mid-range and budget hotels and different from resorts and high-range hotels. In the theory of planned behavior model, trust in Airbnb and perceived authenticity had large significant positive effects on purchase intention, mediated by attitude. Social norms and effort expectancy had direct positive effects on behavioral intentions. Price sensitivity had a direct small negative effect on purchase intention. Overall, fit of the model was within acceptable parameters.

Originality/value

Despite being an important emerging market, Airbnb in India has not been covered by studies of consumer behavior. This paper fills that research gap. Airbnb’s main competitors are home-stays and mid-range hotels. Building trust, creating authentic experiences and ensuring price competitiveness will drive adoption.
