Abstract

The study examines the status and use of the Internet in university libraries of Pakistan. A questionnaire was distributed among the university libraries including the degree granting institutions. The data derived from this study indicated that half the university libraries in Pakistan have access to the Internet and it has become an essential part of library services. The Internet is also being heavily used for performing various library functions such as reference work, classification and cataloguing, document delivery service, subscription to online journals, etc. The study also discusses the problems that are preventing wider use of the Internet in the higher educational institutions of Pakistan.

Terms drawn from DDC indexes and IEEE Web Thesaurus were merged with DDC hierarchies to build a taxonomy in the domain of computer science. When displayed as a directory structure using a shareware tool MyInfo, the resultant taxonomy appeared to be a promising tool for categorisation that can facilitate browsing of information resources in an electronic environment.

Abstract

This study presents quantitative analysis of 251 items contributed by 64 Pakistani LIS professionals culled from LISA‐PLUS. Volume of contribution, sources where published, periodic distribution, type of publications and topical coverage are dealt with in the analysis. Journal literature which represents 90.4 per cent of the citations is published in 43 periodicals, most of which are from the United States. However, more than half of the journal literature comes from one national journal. A wide range of topics is covered, but critical areas such as information needs, user education and collection evaluation receive very little attention.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to investigate the scholarly communications in open access journals of library & information science and to study the key dimensions of these publications.

Design/methodology/approach

For the analysis of the study, top ten open access journals of 2011, which were indexed in SCOPUS, have been selected. The authors employed necessary bibliometric measures to analyze different publication parameters.

Findings

It is found that the contribution of articles in these top ten open access journals in 2011 is good, i.e. 37.3 percent. Single authored papers are found to be the highest (40.48 percent), followed by two-authored and then three-authored papers. The degree of collaboration is found to be between 0.33 and 0.8. The numbers of citations used in the paper are also good (average 21.48 percent paper). In regards to ranking of country productivity, the USA topped the list.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focuses on the publication traits of top ten open access journals of library & information science of the year 2011. A total of 373 papers from these ten journals are analyzed. Further studies can include more open access journals of this field for a period of more than one year.

Practical implications

Scholars can benefit from insights into the scholarly contributions of top ten open access journals of 2011 in the field of library & information science.

Originality/value

This paper provides valuable insights into the nature of academic publishing of open access journals of library & information science. It can help the researchers, professionals, teachers and students to understand the top open access journals, valuable contributions, highly cited journals, country productivity, and other parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, this research examines the relationship between managers’ servant leadership and frontline employees’ customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors by considering career meaningfulness as an underlying mechanism. Furthermore, this study investigates a moderated mediation model by proposing work centrality as a boundary condition in the relationship between career meaningfulness and customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

Two-source (manager-frontline employee dyad) data were collected through a survey questionnaire from hospitality organizations at three different points in time. Hayes’ PROCESS macro was used to analyze the data.

Findings

Findings show that managers’ servant leadership fosters frontline employees’ customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors directly and through career meaningfulness. Frontline employees’ work centrality moderates the relationship between career meaningfulness and customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors (second stage) and the indirect effect of servant leadership (through career meaningfulness) on customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors (moderated mediation).

Practical implications

The findings imply that managers should exhibit servant leadership behaviors to enhance frontline employees’ sense of career meaningfulness and customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors. Additionally, hospitality organizations and managers are encouraged to prioritize work centrality when hiring frontline employees and implement training programs to cultivate work centrality.

Originality/value

This study’s originality lies in exploring career meaningfulness as the underlying mechanism linking servant leadership to customer-oriented boundary-spanning behaviors while also examining work centrality as a second-stage moderator in this relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a novel optimization technique to solve the combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problem considering transmission losses, valve-point loading effects, ramp rate limits and prohibited operating zones. This is one of the most complex optimization problems concerning power systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed algorithm has been called advanced particle swarm optimization (APSO) and was created by applying several innovative modifications to the classic PSO algorithm. APSO performance was tested on four test systems having 14, 40, 54 and 120 generators.

Findings

The suggested modifications have improved the accuracy, convergence rate, robustness and effectiveness of the algorithm, which has produced high-quality solutions for the CEED problem.

Originality/value

The results obtained by APSO were compared with those of several other techniques, and the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm was demonstrated. Also, because of its superlative characteristics, APSO can be applied to many other engineering optimization problems. Moreover, the suggested modifications can be easily used in other population-based optimization algorithms to improve their performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Lot-sizing is among the most important problems in the production and inventory management field. The purpose of this paper is to move one step forward in the direction of the real environment of the dynamic, multi-period, lot-sizing problem. For this purpose, a two-warehouse inventory system, imperfect quality and supplier capacity are simultaneously taken into consideration, where the aim is minimization of the system costs.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem is formulated in a novel continuous nonlinear programming model. Because of the high complexity of the lot-sizing model, invasive weed optimization (IWO), as a population-based metaheuristic algorithm, is proposed to solve the problem. The designed IWO benefits from an innovative encoding–decoding procedure and a heuristic operator for dispersing seeds. Moreover, sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) is used to improve the efficiency of the IWO.

Findings

Taking into consideration a two-warehouse system along with the imperfect quality items leads to model nonlinearity. Using the proposed hybrid IWO and SUMT (SUIWO) for solving small-sized instances shows that SUIWO can provide satisfactory solutions within a reasonable computational time. In comparison between SUIWO and a parameter-tuned genetic algorithm (GA), it is found that when the size of the problem increases, the superiority of SUIWO to GA to find desirable solutions becomes more tangible.

Originality/value

Developing a continuous nonlinear model for the concerned lot-sizing problem and designing a hybrid IWO and SUMT based on a heuristic encoding–decoding procedure are two main originalities of the present study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between consumers' satisfaction with their health insurance and quality of life (QoL), the mediating role of perceived financial burden in this relationship, as well as the moderating effect of external locus of control (LoC) on the relationship between perceived financial burden and QoL among cancer patients.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional design was employed in order to collect quantitative data by means of a self-administrated questionnaire. Participants consisted of 387 conveniently selected consumers diagnosed with cancer in Iran. Furthermore, the questionnaire was translated into Persian using a forward–backward method. The model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The results indicate that the more satisfied patients are with their health insurance, the higher QoL they experience, and this relationship is explained through reducing perceived financial burden in terms of direct and indirect costs of the disease. Although external LoC belief is negatively related to QoL, it buffers the negative association between financial burden and QoL.

Practical implications

Reducing the disparity between consumers' expectation and perception of the comprehensiveness of health insurance policies may relieve consumers' anxiety stemming from financial worries.

Originality/value

This paper fills a gap in the literature where consumers' perception about quality of insurance and its relationship with their QoL has received little attention so far.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigated the control mechanisms of headquarters exercised over their subsidiaries and is conducted with the help of primary data.

Design/methodology/approach

The headquarters–subsidiary model used in this study has four components of control in it: personal centralised control (PCC), bureaucratic formalised control (BFC), output control (OUT) and informal control (INFO). These controls (as an agency mechanism) provide a solid platform on which other mechanisms can be built. Using a data collected from 147 multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the influence of each of these factors on this selection is empirically tested with the help of primary data.

Findings

The study found that Anglo-Saxon countries heavily use impersonal types of control mechanisms, specifically bureaucratic formalised control and output control. Compared to the USA, the level of control in Oriental subsidiaries is less; or, put differently, the latter enjoy a greater degree of autonomy than US subsidiaries. The complementarities of these control mechanisms may be linked to earlier studies that show that successful organisations combine tight control with more open, informal and flexible information and communication exchanges. A focus that bends too much towards formal control or too much towards informal control may threaten a company’s existence. This research provides an empirical explanation on this premise.

Research limitations/implications

The methodology adopted for this study can be extended for similar studies in the Middle East or in Gulf Council Cooperation countries.

Practical implications

The study show that MNEs from different countries often have different dominant control mechanisms and organisational models. This is partly due to different industry distributions, but it is also related to cultural/societal differences between countries. These differences should be considered when searching for a partner in cross-national mergers and acquisitions. Failure to do so could hinder the successful operation of a merger that seems to be perfect from a financial and competitive point of view.

Originality/value

The study explored variations in the extent of control mechanisms, according to country of origin and organisational characteristics, in a challenging country of domicile. This empirical work not only replicates earlier studies, retesting propositions encountered in the existing literature, but also sheds new light on the challenges of doing business in the Gulf region, and the consequences of the large scale usage of expatriates.
