Abstract

Purpose

Parts created with fused deposition modelling (FDM) have poor surface quality and dimensional accuracy, which limits their applicability in a variety of applications. Therefore, post process of FDM parts seems to be essential to tackle these problems. The purpose of this study is to study the influence of lapping parameters (time, weight and angular velocity) on the surface roughness, material removal rate (MRR) and flexural strength of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) parts manufactured by FDM were post processed with the aid of lapping operation.

Design/methodology/approach

After printing the specimens, parts were lapped according to the Taguchi design of experiments. The surface roughness of the lapped parts was then evaluated by using laser profilometry, and the results were compared to study how lapping parameters affected surface roughness. A digital microscope was used to examine the surface damage of components that were being lapped. After that, the flexural strength of lapped parts was compared with the untreated part to study the effect of lapping process on the flexural strength. Finally, the influence of lapping parameters was investigated on the thickness change and MRR.

Findings

The results showed that while by increasing lapping time the surface roughness would improve; angular velocity and weight have an optimal value. The results also illustrated that not only the surface roughness of all ABS samples improve significantly but also the antistrophic behaviour of additively manufactured parts is turned to isotropic behaviour without decreasing flexural strength of specimens. MRR is also proportional to these parameters and by rising the value of them, MRR will increase.

Originality/value

The previous techniques of improving surface roughness whether chemical treatment or mechanical treatment had some disadvantages such as reducing mechanical properties, cost, long time of the process and so forth. As a result, finding a new approach such as lapping process to overcome the problems of previous methods seems to be necessary.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of centrifugal disk finishing (CDF) technique on the surface and subsurface characteristics of the fused deposited modeling (FDM) parts in both theoretical and experimental aspects. From theoretical aspect, a novel theoretical model is developed as a function of layer deposition orientation, layer thickness, finishing working time, density ratio and hardness ratio to estimate the surface roughness profile of FDM part at different finishing conditions and finishing time intervals. Meanwhile, from the experimental aspect, an experimental campaign was performed under different mechanical and mechanical-chemical finishing conditions to verify the theoretical model and also assess the surface and subsurface characteristics of the polished parts.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretical model commences with an approximation of surface profile of the FDM part through a sequence of parabola arcs, continues with the calculation of reference line and machined surface profile and leads to a formulation of surface roughness of as-printed and polished surface. In the experimental section, the FDM parts are polished under dry, pure water, 25% and 50% volumetric aqueous acetone solutions finishing conditions through CDF technique.

Findings

The comparison between experimental and theoretical results reveals 9% mean absolute error between theoretical and experimental results. Meanwhile, Rq reduction percentage of polished parts under dry, pure water, 25% and 50% aqueous acetone solutions are 66.1%, 54.5%, 56.9% and 67.2%, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy results reveal severe layer damage in dry finishing condition, while the application of 50% aqueous acetone as a polishing solution completely eliminates layer damage. Another promising finding was sticky material phenomenon on the surface of polished part under 25% finishing condition. The Shore hardness test illustrates that the surface hardness improvement of the polished parts under dry, pure water, 25% and 50% aqueous acetone solutions finishing conditions are 8.4%, 2.25%, 4.36% and 10.8%, respectively. The results also revealed that the dimension variation of polished parts under dry, pure water, 25% and 50% aqueous acetone solutions are 0.634%, 0.525%, 0.545% and 0.608%, respectively. The edge profile radius of the as-printed part is 134 µm, while the edge profiles radius of the polished parts under dry, pure water, 25% aqueous acetone solution and 50% aqueous acetone solution are 785.5 µm, 545.5 µm, 623.5 µm and 721.5 µm, respectively, at the polishing time of 720 min.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills an identified need to study the benefits of the mechanical-chemical polishing technique in comparison to mechanical and chemical polishing strategy of the FDM parts for the first time. Beside the experimental campaign, the novel analytical formulation of surface roughness as a function of mechanical properties of abrasive media and FDM part and finishing specifications provides a valuable insight in the case of material-removal processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the variables of the fused deposition modelling (FDM) process and improve their effect on the mechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) components reinforced with copper microparticles.

Design/methodology/approach

In the experimental approach, after drying the ABS granule, it was mixed with copper microparticles (at concentrations of 5%, 8% and 10%) in a single screw extruder to fabricate pure ABS and composite filaments. Then, by making the components by the FDM process, the tensile strength of the parts was determined through tensile strength tests. Taguchi DOE method was used to design the experiments in which nozzle temperature, filling pattern and layer thickness were the design variables. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and signal-to-noise analysis were conducted to determine the effectiveness of each FDM process parameter on the ultimate tensile strength of printed samples. Following that, the main effect analysis was used to optimize each process parameter for pure ABS and its composite at different copper contents.

Findings

The study allows the layer thickness and filling pattern had the highest effects on the ultimate tensile strength of the printed materials (pure and composite) in the FDM process. Moreover, the results show that the ultimate tensile strength of the ABS composite containing 5% copper was nearly 12.3% higher than the pure ABS part. According to validation tests, the maximum error of experiments was about 0.96%.

Originality/value

In this paper, the effect of copper microparticles (as filling agent) was investigated on the ultimate tensile strength of printed ABS material during the FDM process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new mathematical model for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem with aging effects and multi-maintenance activities.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors assume that each machine may be subject to several maintenance activities over the scheduling horizon and a machine turn into its initial condition after maintenance activity and the aging effects start anew. The objective is to minimize the weighted sum of early/tardy times of jobs and maintenance costs.

Findings

As this problem is proven to be non-deterministic polynomial-time hard (NP-hard), the authors employed imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and genetic algorithm (GA) as solution approaches, and the parameters of the proposed algorithms are calibrated by a novel parameter tuning tool called Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The computational results clarify that GA performs better than ICA in quality of solutions and computational time.

Originality/value

Predictive maintenance (PM) activities carry out the operations on machines and tools before the breakdown takes place and it helps to prevent failures before they happen.

Abstract

Purpose

In real manufacturing systems, schedules are often disrupted with uncertainty factors such as random machine breakdown, random process time, random job arrivals or job cancellations. This paper aims to investigate robust scheduling for a two-stage assembly flow shop scheduling with random machine breakdowns and considers two objectives makespan and robustness simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

Owing to its structural and algorithmic complexity, the authors proposed imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), genetic algorithm (GA) and hybridized with simulation techniques for handling these complexities. For better efficiency of the proposed algorithms, the authors used artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the parameters of the proposed algorithms in uncertain condition. Also Taguchi method is applied for analyzing the effect of the parameters of the problem on each other and quality of solutions.

Findings

Finally, experimental study and analysis of variance (ANOVA) is done to investigate the effect of different proposed measures on the performance of the obtained results. ANOVA's results indicate the job and weight of makespan factors have a significant impact on the robustness of the proposed meta-heuristics algorithms. Also, it is obvious that the most effective parameter on the robustness for GA and ICA is job.

Originality/value

Robustness is calculated by the expected value of the relative difference between the deterministic and actual makespan.

Abstract

Purpose

COVID-19’s attack on the system of education left the learning of many students in limbo. For minimizing this effect, the current study sought to probe how Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) can facilitate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ vocabulary knowledge. In so doing, a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest research design was adopted to check the effect of a newly developed application (i.e. visual vocabulary learning, hereafter VVL) in an EFL classroom.

Design/methodology/approach

To complying with the objective, a number of intermediate students (N = 40) were considered to participate in the study. They were assigned into a visual learning group (VLG) and a nonvisual learning group (NVLG) comprising 20 students in each. The VLG was directed to learn vocabulary by a VVL, and the NVG, a conventional method was employed for vocabulary instruction. An independent samples t-test was run to screen the efficacy of the intervention.

Findings

The finding revealed that participants in the VLG outperformed significantly in the posttest. The finding is beneficial for EFL teachers, syllabus designers, and material developers to take advantage of mobile applications in teaching vocabulary.

Originality/value

This study was conducted during COVID 19 between two groups in Iran.

Abstract

Purpose

Education systems throughout the world seek to take the advantage of every presenting opportunity for achieving a standard level of ethical accountability and capability. The purpose of this paper is to explain the challenges of professional ethics training from the perspective of faculty members at the Ardabil University of Medical Sciences (ARUMS).

Design/methodology/approach

The present qualitative framework analysis held interviews with 21 key faculty members were selected using the purposeful and snowball method to interview from ARUMS in 2016. The duration of each interview varied between 45 and 120 min. The data obtained were analyzed in MAXQDA-10. Codes were extracted using inductive methods.

Findings

Three main themes were extracted from the interviews, namely, educational efficacy, professional interaction and equity in education along with 12 subthemes, namely, teacher’s personal capability, work in the area of expertise, regular class attendance, quality class attendance, inclusion of theoretical bases, the teacher as an ethical role model, respect for the student, encouragement of ethical behaviors, respect for the patient’s rights, fair assessment, attention to differences and positive discrimination.

Practical implications

This study results could help to improve the quality of training and ethical standards in medical education.

Originality/value

To comply with the codes of ethics in research, permission was obtained from the Ethics Committee and the participants were ensured about the confidentiality of their data and their right to withdraw from the study at any stage. Given that this project was a qualitative study, the authors did not have a moral or practical problem in the study. This study was approved with number “IR.ARUMS.FEC.1394.25” at the Ardabil University of Medical Sciences Research Ethics Council. The cooperation of participants in the study was completely voluntary; moreover, the authors obtained written consent from participants for the study.
