Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to investigate the extent of TPM practices in Malaysian manufacturing companies, as TPM practices have been shown to lead to better performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted in Malaysian manufacturing companies to examine the extent of TPM practices. The correlations among TPM practices were also evaluated accordingly.

Findings

Correlation analysis was carried out and the results show that there is a positive relationship among TPM practices. In general, TPM practices, for instance autonomous maintenance, planned maintenance and TPM strategy, show positive and significant correlations among this sample of Malaysian manufacturing companies.

Research limitation/implications

Since the sample was rather small, caution is required when making generalizations.

Practical implications

The study highlights the need to improve the collaboration between the maintenance function and other functions in organizations. TPM can be established as an aggressive strategy to face stiff competitive environments that require zero breakdowns, stoppages, and failures of equipment.

Originality/value

The achievements of Malaysian manufacturing companies through TPM practices are evaluated and important TPM practices are identified for enhancing the effectiveness of TPM implementation programs in the Malaysian context.

Learning outcomes

After studying this case, students must be able to explain the rationale for going public; identify the type of markets available for listing a company on Bursa Malaysia and explain the listing process; and analyse pre-IPO financial performance using trend analysis, comparative analysis and common-size analysis.

Case overview/synopsis

Uniutama Education and Consultancy Sdn. Bhd. (UECSB) in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) was a company with strong financial performance and growth opportunities. In 2020, UECSB was planning for an initial public offering (IPO), whereby the company could offer shares to the public. This would allow UECSB to raise capital from public investors, and increase UECSB’s credibility and exposure. Therefore, Halim, who was the General Manager of UECSB, needed to decide whether or not UECSB should go for an IPO.

Complexity academic level

This case is more appropriate for final-year undergraduate students, particularly those majoring in Finance. This case is also suitable for postgraduate students, especially those enrolling in Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Business Management (MBM) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programmes, and Executive Education programmes in Management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to examine the influence of two dimensions of entrepreneurial competencies, namely, strategic competency and ethical competency on the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs); and second, to explore the role of network competence as a mediator among these understudied variables.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for this study were collected from wholesale and retail-based SMEs in Malaysia through a standard structured questionnaire. PLS–SEM approach was utilised to analyse the data.

Findings

Although the findings did not reveal a direct effect of strategic and ethical competencies of entrepreneurs on SMEs’ growth, these competences, however, were found to be influential in driving their growth when network competence was used as a mediator.

Originality/value

The existence of a mediation effect between strategic and ethical competencies and SMEs’ growth via network competence has provided insights which add new knowledge to the extant entrepreneurship and SMEs’ performance literature.
