Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the tribological performance of neat polyamide-imide (PAI) and PAI composite (PAI + 12% graphite + 3% polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE]) under varying mediums and conditions, including dry sliding, distilled water and seawater lubrication, to determine their suitability for high-stress applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Tribological tests were conducted using a pin-on-disc setup with AISI 316 L stainless steel (SS) as counterface. Experiments were carried out under loads of 150 and 300 N and sliding speeds of 1.5 and 3.0 m/s. Values of temperatures, friction coefficients and wear rates were recorded to analyze the effect of fillers and lubrication mediums.

Findings

The PAI composite outperformed the neat PAI under all conditions, showing significant reductions in friction coefficients and wear rates. Seawater lubrication yielded the best results, achieving friction coefficients of 0.05 and 0.01 and specific wear rates of 18.10−16 m²/N and 1.10 −15 m²/N, for neat PAI and PAI composite, respectively. Graphite and PTFE fillers enhanced lubrication, reduced surface temperatures and mitigated abrasive and adhesive wear mechanisms. Superior cooling and lubrication effects of the seawater contributed to these improvements.

Originality/value

Previous studies mainly focused on dry sliding and distilled water lubrication for the PAI and its composites, with no research on the seawater conditions. This study compares the tribological behaviors of the neat PAI and PAI composite against AISI 316 L SS under dry sliding, distilled water and seawater lubrication.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a unique disposable bed sheet design which reduces infection risk and other related problems from patient to patient and others during staying period at hospitals.

Design/methodology/approach

The unique disposable bed sheet consists of three layers which are laminated to each other by hot‐melt technique. Upper and lower layers are different weights of 100 per cent polypropylene produced by spunbond technology. Plasma technology has been used to make the surface of the spunbond polypropylene sheets hydrophilic. Additionally, thermal bond 100 per cent polypropylene sheets, which have hydrophilic surfaces already due to chemical finish have been also used as upper layer. As core layer, different weights of 100 per cent viscose sheets, which have high liquid‐absorption capacity have been used. All three layers have been laminated by hot‐melt technique using etylene vinyl acetate interlayers between them. Antimicrobial effect has been achieved by the impregnation of silver and antibiotic‐based chemicals onto the hydrophilic surface of upper layers. Quality control and performance tests of all these works have been performed according to ISO and BS norms.

Findings

It is possible to have very good liquid suction capacity together with superb comfort properties, thanks to its viscose intermediate sheet and excellent wetback values. Moreover, it is initially cheap, hygienic and has enough strength against breaking and tearing.

Research limitations/implications

Cheaper antimicrobial agents and different application amounts should be checked. Also, durability of the hydrophilicity given by plasma treatment has to be checked. Additionally, dermatological tests should be applied.

Practical implications

It is expected that the infection risk at hospitals will be reduced. Moreover, hospitals will be able to use hygienic bed sheets, which would be preferable to the hospital management. Additionally, this unique design can be used for patients at home or for injured animals in veterinary clinics.

Social implications

Additional staying period due to hospital infections and infections from patient to patient/hospital personnel/visitors/other people will be reduced. Moreover, it is expected that life quality will be raised and dead ratio will be decreased. Beside this, manpower loss and increasing costs due to hospital infections will be prevented.

Originality/value

Design is new and unique. It has practical and social implications.

Abstract

Purpose

Criteria of skills and their schemata have evolved out of historical social practices. Interpretation of social events is guided and constrained by the prevailing rationality which itself reflects the dominant constellation of power. Hence, some argued that informal provision of skills delivery is the base of business growth. Upon the success of informal provision, institutional counterpart unethically grabs the market, kicking off the earlier. Evidences arguably confirmed that the institutional provision of skills delivery contributes to rapid business growth. Business growth is indeed important but not at the cost of exploitation of ethics which is the central focus of this study.

Design/methodology/approach

Given the differentiated nature of research questions, multiple techniques are used to collect the data. However, this research adopts the norms of qualitative methods. Both secondary and primary data are used. While secondary data are collected through document reviews, primary data are collected via interviews. In total, 12 industries are sampled and equally distributed into two sectors (manufacturing and services).

Findings

Findings show that the professional positions in the manufacturing industries at their inception phase were occupied by non-university graduates who received neither informal trainings nor on-the-job trainings. Over the time, university graduates started capturing the market. This has forced the non-university graduates to accrue a diploma from the universities in order to retain. Those who failed to obtain a university diploma are compelled to leave the sector. In fact, professional positions in service industries at the inception phase were mainly occupied by the university graduates who did not study the relevant subjects from the universities but received training from the informal provision. Later, universities started offering these programmes.

Originality/value

A few studies have been published in the area of manufacturing industries especially on garments sector. None covers the paradigm transformation of skills (human capital theory) in garments. The authors also failed to locate a comparative study that maps the contribution of different provisions of skills providers and their paradigm transformations occurred within manufacturing and service industries. Therefore, this project explores the contribution of informal and institutional provisions of skills delivery for the inception and growth of industries by comparing between manufacturing and service industries.

Abstract

Purpose

Double auctions are widely used market mechanisms on the world. Communication technologies such as internet increased importance of this market institution. The purpose of this study is to develop novel bidding strategies for dynamic double auction markets, explain price formation through interactions of buyers and sellers in decentralized fashion and compare macro market outputs of different micro bidding strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, two novel bidding strategies based on fuzzy logic are presented. Also, four new bidding strategies based on price targeting are introduced for the aim of comparison. The proposed bidding strategies are based on agent-based computational economics approach. The authors performed multi-agent simulations of double auction market for each suggested bidding strategy. For the aim of comparison, the zero intelligence strategy is also used in the simulation study. Various market outputs are obtained from these simulations. These outputs are market efficiencies, price means, price standard deviations, profits of sellers and buyers, transaction quantities, profit dispersions and Smith’s alpha statistics. All outputs are also compared to each other using t-tests and kernel density plots.

Findings

The results show that fuzzy logic-based bidding strategies are superior to price targeting strategies and the zero intelligence strategy. The authors also find that only small number of inputs such as the best bid, the best ask, reference price and trader valuations are sufficient to take right action and to attain higher efficiency in a fuzzy logic-based bidding strategy.

Originality/value

This paper presents novel bidding strategies for dynamic double auction markets. New bidding strategies based on fuzzy logic inference systems are developed, and their superior performances are shown. These strategies can be easily used in market-based control and automated bidding systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to find the best performance polymer material to be used in railway car bogies.

Design/methodology/approach

Wear tests and optical and scanning electron microscopy were used.

Findings

The friction coefficients of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and Nylon 6 polymers, as opposed to AISI 4140 steel, reduced with the increment of applied loads. With the increment of sliding speed, the friction coefficient increased in both UHMWPE and Nylon 6 polymers. The specific wear rate of the UHMWPE polymer was determined to be about 10-14 m2/N, whereas the rate of Nylon 6 was determined to be 10-13 m2/N.

Practical implications

The aim of the study was to find the best performance polymer material to be used in railway car bogies.

Originality/value

The friction and wear performance of UHMWPE and Nylon 6 engineering polymers were studied and compared to their AISI 4140 steel counterparts. It is an original work and it is not published in any media.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the fracture of grade X42 microalloyed steel used as pipe material after tensile test at room temperature and impact tests at 0, −20 and −40°C, respectively.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first stage of the study, X42 steels in the form of sheet and pipe materials were selected and etched samples were characterized using light microscope. In the second stage, mechanical properties of steels were obtained by microhardness measurements, static tensile and impact tests and all the broken surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope to determine the fracture type as a function of both microstructure and loading.

Findings

The examinations revealed that: first, the sheet material had a typical ferritic-pearlitic matrix, second, the transverse section of the sheet steel exhibited a matrix consisting of polygonal ferrite-aligned pearlite colonies and the longitudinal one had elongated ferrite phase and pearlite colonies in the direction of rolling, third, ferrite and pearlite distribution was different from the sheet material due to multiaxial deformation in the pipe material, fourth, tensile fracture surfaces of the steels had typical dimple fracture induced by microvoid coalescence, fifth, impact fracture surfaces of the steels changed as a function of the test temperature and cleavage fracture mode of ferritic-pearlitic matrix became more dominant as the temperature decreased, and sixth, grain morphology had an effect on the fracture behavior of the steels.

Originality/value

The paper explains the fracture behaviour of X42 microalloyed pipeline steel and its fractographical analysis.

This chapter explains the role and potential of colour and lighting as two important elements of the service atmosphere in tourism and hospitality service encounters. The chapter first explains the importance of colour and lighting in services from the perspective of customers’ sensory perceptions. Then, the chapter provides examples to demonstrate how psychological/neuro-marketing tools of Eye Tracker and Facial Recognition, Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) and Heart Rate (HR) can be used to understand the role of colour and lighting in customer satisfaction in tourism and hospitality service encounters. Based on this perspective, the study offers recommendations to design service environments in terms of colour and lighting.

Abstract

The development of information technologies and the increase in the number of new generation of technology-based consumers lead to significant changes in the promotion and positioning strategies implemented in consumer markets. Applications such as Augmented Reality (AR) have become widespread in promotion activities.

In this study, the authors aimed to determine whether there was a difference between customers’ brand trust and purchase intentions regarding real experiences of the consumers at the store, experiences about AR applications, and traditional advertisements.

Results show that AR applications differ in terms of brand trust and purchasing intention according to traditional advertisements, and the attitudes of consumers toward brand trust and purchase intention in AR applications are more favorable than traditional advertisements. In the light of the results of the study, various strategy proposals were presented to researchers and marketing practitioners.

Introduction: – Together with the increasing competition between businesses each day, the sales and marketing process of products and services have become increasingly difficult. For this reason, sales have become a marketing activity with an ever-growing importance to businesses. The performance of salespeople who undertake this challenge on behalf of the business is highly valuable for firms. Many researches have noted that there is a relationship between the performance of salesperson and motivation. The purpose of motivation in sales literature is to direct salespeople to exert more effort in reaching sales-oriented goals and aims. In order to ensure this, many businesses use various motivation tools/factors.

Purpose – The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of motivation factors on performance of salesperson.

Methodology – Quantitative research method was used in the study. A questionnaire was prepared with this aim in mind and administered to 315 employees working as salesperson in Çanakkale and Bursa provinces.

Findings – The findings from the analysis of the data show that the five dimensions namely satisfaction, image, relations, knowledge of product and service and advertisement related to motivation factors have a significant effect on the task performance of the salesperson.
