Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to modify the photostability of organic fluorescent dyes and to develop and evaluate a route of their derived polymeric fluorescent dyes.

Design/methodology/approach

A series of novel polymeric fluorescent dyes were prepared using 3-(2-benzimidazolyl)-7-(diethylamino)-coumarin (disperse yellow 8GFF, abbreviated as 8GFF) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as raw materials. First, an intermediate of carboxyl functioned 8GFF was prepared by condensation reaction of 8GFF and pyromellitic dianhydride; and then the polymeric fluorescent dyes were synthesized by reacting PEG with the condensate intermediate.

Findings

FTIR, UV-vis, and PL showed that the polymeric fluorescent dyes had been successfully synthesised, and the photostability of organic fluorescent dyes was improved significantly.

Research limitations/implications

In the present work, the polymeric fluorescent dyes had been successfully synthesized, and the photostability of organic fluorescent dyes was improved significantly. This methodology can be employed to prepare novel polymeric fluorescent materials and to improve the photostability of organic dyes for various applications.

Practical implications

Polycondensable dyes offer a new area of material science which can be widely used in coloured polymer materials production.

Originality/value

The method developed in the study reported in this paper provided a new strategy to develop new types of polycondensable dyes materials with fluorescent property.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use the SmartPLS method for empirical analysis and explore the impact of various factors on the enhancement of corporate social responsibility (CSR) application among listed companies in Vietnam. With the increasing scrutiny over CSR disclosures and the pivotal role of internal and external factors, the research seeks to uncover how factors such as management’s perception, big data application, firm characteristics, organisational culture and stakeholder pressure significantly influence CSR application.

Design/methodology/approach

The research assesses the relationships among these factors by drawing on a sample of 255 listed Vietnamese companies across various sectors. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (SmartPLS) is applied to analyse the data and uncover the impact of the identified factors on CSR application.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that big data applications, organisational cultures and firm characteristics significantly impact CSR applications. Additionally, management’s perception, directly and indirectly, influences CSR applications through its effect on big data applications.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to listed companies in Vietnam, which may affect the generalizability of the findings to other contexts. Further research is needed to validate these findings in different markets and settings.

Practical implications

These results provide valuable insights for corporate governance practitioners in Vietnam and similar emerging markets. By highlighting the critical role of big data applications in CSR practices, the study suggests pathways for enhancing corporate governance frameworks to improve CSR applications.

Social implications

Improved CSR practices driven by the factors identified in this study can lead to more sustainable and socially responsible business operations.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature by using the SmartPLS method to analyse the impact of various factors on CSR applications in an emerging market. It emphasises the importance of big data applications in shaping effective CSR practices and offers valuable recommendations for corporate governance enhancements.

Abstract

This study provides a bibliometric analysis of business literature on the interlinks of fintech, climate risks, and sustainable finance. Fintech growth promotes national environmental efficiency and green finance by decreasing carbon intensity toward the net-zero target. National fintech growth moderates the impact of environmental, social, and governance investment on bank efficiency. Fintech mitigates the loan bankruptcy risk imposed by climate risks with strict mortgage lending decisions due to climate concerns. Fintech applications in banking systems optimize financing costs and increase the accessibility of money for firms, decreasing corporate greenwashing behaviors and promoting green innovation. The existing literature leaves room for future studies on fintech to promote climate finance with important policies for climate action toward Sustainable Development Goals.

This study explores the effects of gender and participation in agricultural cooperatives on biodiversity conservation farming practices in vegetable production.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the effects of gender and participation in agricultural cooperatives on biodiversity conservation farming practices in vegetable production.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used data collected from a survey of 627 vegetable farmers in Viet Nam and employed the Ordered Probit regression model to examine the effects of gender and participation in agricultural cooperatives on biodiversity conservation farming practices.

Findings

We find that female vegetable farmers are more likely to conduct biodiversity conservation farming practices than male farmers. This gender difference is, however, removed when participation in agricultural cooperatives is controlled, suggesting that agricultural cooperatives effectively facilitate biodiversity conservation farming practices.

Research limitations/implications

It is noted that our study is not free from some limitations. First, we conducted our study on vegetable farmers only. The biodiversity conservation practices in vegetable cultivation might be different from other types of farming. Future studies should be conducted with other types of agricultural cultivation. Second, we do not have enough data to explain why female farmers are more likely to adopt biodiversity conservation practices than male farmers. Future studies should capture biological and social aspects of gender differences to address this limitation.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on biodiversity conservation by presenting empirical evidence on the effects of gender and agricultural cooperatives. Participation in agricultural cooperatives is revealed to facilitate the adoption of biodiversity conservation practices. In addition, we find that the education of farmers, the number of years that farmers have been living in the local area and the quality of land and water are positively related to the adoption of biodiversity conservation practices in vegetable production.

Abstract

The development of financial markets as well as a country’s overall financial system plays a crucial role in the evolution of the world’s real economy. In developed countries like the USA, UK, Japan, and European nations, the world’s financial centers are located for exchanging huge capital flows with well-established functioning. However, laying the foundation for a financial center can be a big challenge to developing markets whose financial systems are still in the early stages, since the formation of financial centers is determined by multiple factors. Motivated by that reason, this book chapter provides a comprehensive review of critical determinants in the formation of international financial centers, including (i) economic growth; (ii) governance and business environment; (iii) financial development; (iv) labor force; (v) infrastructure accessibility; and (vi) the country’s reputation and stability. In line with the reviewed literature, the study particularly highlights the recent political and technological developments in the world and their impacts on the future of different financial centers worldwide.
