Abstract

Complexity is worth studying as a subject for its own sake. We intend to investigate complexity in the context of a fairly broad class of dynamical systems (known as sequential machines). A sequential machine is a perfectly good model of an organization (or organism) which strives for survival, acting under resource and time constraints. For a given complexity level of the system design we could find the level of contact indicating—roughly—the level of understanding of the system transformation. We call this the control complexity. The “information technology” is generated by the lattice of partitions of the state space of the system realized by a serial‐parallel decomposition into component systems.

Abstract

This paper is a brief summary of work on fuzzy sets being conducted at UCLA, with an emphasis on work from Goguen's Fuzzy Robot Users Group. There is a brief summary of earlier work upon which present work is based, a section of Fuzzy Robot Users Group results, a section on other work at UCLA, and a summary of work now in progress.

Abstract

Probably no aspect of librarianship presents such variations of practice in individual libraries as does the provision of subject catalogues. The author catalogue, which tells the user whether a given work of which he knows the author and title is in the library, must necessarily take a similar form everywhere, and such variations as do exist in the treatment of certain types of heading—that of academies is a case in point—are quickly assimilated by the reader as he moves from library to library. The same cannot be said of the catalogue which tells the user what works are to be found in the library on a given topic. In the Anglo‐Saxon countries subject catalogues may be arranged, if indeed they exist at all, according to a variety of systems, and even where one of the accepted classification schemes or lists of subject headings is used the local modifications are often legion. Many university and research libraries find that no existing scheme offers an arrangement of the whole field of knowledge which reflects the approach to which their readers are accustomed; and certainly no ready‐made scheme is entirely suitable for a university library in the United Kingdom, although many libraries do attempt to provide a useful arrangement both of the books on the shelves and of the entries in the subject catalogue by adapting Dewey, the Brussels decimal classification, or the Library of Congress classification. Bliss, when his full scheme has been published, will probably be found to provide the arrangement most suitable for use in academic libraries, but even his admirable classification fails to provide a scheme which can be identified at all points with the approach which is required in a library which serves first and foremost the teaching of a university.

Abstract

Ancient Egyptian studies, as a formal academic discipline, originated in the 19th century. Besides being of great fascination to scholars, ancient Egypt has also been of much interest to the general public, due to the deep sense of wonder, grandeur, and mystery that the extant monuments and artifacts have evoked, and still continue to evoke.

Abstract

This paper gives a brief account of national, regional and some special activities in the field of library automation in the Federal Republic of Germany. Among others, the influence of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) (German Research Association) is discussed. A short description of the Arbeitsstelle für Bibliothekstechnik (ABT) (Institute for Library Technology) and the Zentralstelle für maschinelle Dokumentation (ZMD) (Centre for machine methods in Documentation) is given. Besides some regional plans and projects, the system of cooperative serials cataloguing and the central serials data bank are dealt with.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review of humanitarian logistics (HL) that aims to identify trends and suggest some directions for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper develops a research framework for literature review through qualitative and quantitative content analysis. First, previous literature reviews in HL are updated and detailed. Then, seven classification criteria are added to earlier ones in order to advance the literature analysis.

Findings

The conclusions identify some literature gaps and research opportunities. The main conclusions are the need for more studies into the disaster recovery phase and the need for closer relationships between academia and humanitarian organizations to increase the number of applied research.

Research limitations/implications

The literature is limited to academic peer-reviewed journals because of their academic relevance, accessibility, and ease of searching.

Practical implications

Help potential researchers to set up a research agenda for future work.

Social implications

Reinforce earlier calls to increase truly applied research and improve social impact of the field.

Originality/value

In total, 228 papers that were published in the HL area are reviewed, giving rise to the most extensive literature review in this area. New dimensions for literature review in HL are proposed, which give some new insights into potential research directions.
