The properties of the spliced strength, bending rigidity and hysteresis of a splice under different splicing conditions have been investigated. The results shown that, the levels of importance for different spliced yam properties are different. However, the length of the yam tails for splicing has the most important effect on the tested spliced yam properties.

Abstract

The appearance of a yarn is one of the most important yarn physical properties no matter it is for normal yarns, fancy yarns or the spliced yarns. As for the spliced yarns, the appearance of the splices will be used as an indicator to indicate whether the splice is acceptable or not for providing the necessary strength for further processing. When splicing the yarns under different splicer and yarn parameters, different spliced yarn appearance will be obtained. The appearance of the splices were then compared with the parent yarns and a grade (1 to 5) was then given to the splice with, 1 equals to Fail and 5 equals to Identical. The results indicated that the yarn linear density and the length of the yarn tails are the most important parameters that affect the appearance of the spliced yarn.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a novel structure for the physical internet (PI)–enabled sustainable supplier selection and inventory management problem under uncertain environments.

Design/methodology/approach

To address hybrid uncertainty both in the objective function and constraints, a novel interactive hybrid multi-objective optimization solution approach combining Me-based fuzzy possibilistic programming and interval programming approaches is tailored.

Findings

Various numerical experiments are introduced to validate the feasibility of the established model and the proposed solution method.

Originality/value

Due to its interconnectedness, the PI has the opportunity to support firms in addressing sustainability challenges and reducing initial impact. The sustainable supplier selection and inventory management have become critical operational challenges in PI-enabled supply chain problems. This is the first attempt on this issue, which uses the presented novel interactive possibilistic programming method.

Abstract

This chapter develops a set of two-step identification methods for social interactions models with unknown networks, and discusses how the proposed methods are connected to the identification methods for models with known networks. The first step uses linear regression to identify the reduced forms. The second step decomposes the reduced forms to identify the primitive parameters. The proposed methods use panel data to identify networks. Two cases are considered: the sample exogenous vectors span Rn (long panels), and the sample exogenous vectors span a proper subspace of Rn (short panels). For the short panel case, in order to solve the sample covariance matrices’ non-invertibility problem, this chapter proposes to represent the sample vectors with respect to a basis of a lower-dimensional space so that we have fewer regression coefficients in the first step. This allows us to identify some reduced form submatrices, which provide equations for identifying the primitive parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is the simultaneous determination of optimal replacement threshold and inspection scheme for a system within condition-based maintenance (CBM) framework.

Design/methodology/approach

A proportional hazards model (PHM) is used for risk of failure and a Markovian process to model the system covariates. Total expected long-run cost (including replacement, inspection and downtime costs) is formulated in terms of replacement threshold and inspection scheme. Through an iterative procedure, for all different values of replacement thresholds, their associated optimal inspection scheme is determined using an effective search algorithm. By evaluating the corresponding costs, the optimal replacement threshold and its associated optimal inspection scheme are, then, identified.

Findings

The mathematical formulation, that takes into account all different costs, required for the simultaneous determination of optimal replacement threshold and optimal inspection scheme for an item subjected to CBM using PHM is provided. The proposed approach is compared against classical age policy and one state-of-the-art policy through a numerical example. The results show that the proposed approach outperforms other comparing policies.

Practical implications

In practical situations where CBM is implemented, inspections and downtime often incur cost. Under such circumstances, findings of this paper can be utilized for the determination of optimal replacement threshold and optimal inspection scheme so that the CBM cost is minimized.

Originality/value

In most of the reported researches, it is often assumed that inspections have no cost and/or that the time for replacements (either preventive or at failure) is negligible. In the contrary, in this paper the author takes all cost factors including inspection costs, replacement time(s) and their associated downtime costs into account in the simultaneous determination of optimal replacement threshold and optimal inspection scheme.

Abstract

With numerous and ambiguous sets of information and often conflicting requirements, construction management is a complex process involving much uncertainty. Decision makers may be challenged with satisfying multiple criteria using vague information. Fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (FMCDM) provides an innovative approach for addressing complex problems featuring diverse decision makers’ interests, conflicting objectives and numerous but uncertain bits of information. FMCDM has therefore been widely applied in construction management. With the increase in information complexity, extensions of fuzzy set (FS) theory have been generated and adopted to improve its capacity to address this complexity. Examples include hesitant FSs (HFSs), intuitionistic FSs (IFSs) and type-2 FSs (T2FSs). This chapter introduces commonly used FMCDM methods, examines their applications in construction management and discusses trends in future research and application. The chapter first introduces the MCDM process as well as FS theory and its three main extensions, namely, HFSs, IFSs and T2FSs. The chapter then explores the linkage between FS theory and its extensions and MCDM approaches. In total, 17 FMCDM methods are reviewed and two FMCDM methods (i.e. T2FS-TOPSIS and T2FS-PROMETHEE) are further improved based on the literature. These 19 FMCDM methods with their corresponding applications in construction management are discussed in a systematic manner. This review and development of FS theory and its extensions should help both researchers and practitioners better understand and handle information uncertainty in complex decision problems.

Abstract

Due to the increasing size and complexity of construction projects, construction engineering and management involves the coordination of many complex and dynamic processes and relies on the analysis of uncertain, imprecise and incomplete information, including subjective and linguistically expressed information. Various modelling and computing techniques have been used by construction researchers and applied to practical construction problems in order to overcome these challenges, including fuzzy hybrid techniques. Fuzzy hybrid techniques combine the human-like reasoning capabilities of fuzzy logic with the capabilities of other techniques, such as optimization, machine learning, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) and simulation, to capitalise on their strengths and overcome their limitations. Based on a review of construction literature, this chapter identifies the most common types of fuzzy hybrid techniques applied to construction problems and reviews selected papers in each category of fuzzy hybrid technique to illustrate their capabilities for addressing construction challenges. Finally, this chapter discusses areas for future development of fuzzy hybrid techniques that will increase their capabilities for solving construction-related problems. The contributions of this chapter are threefold: (1) the limitations of some standard techniques for solving construction problems are discussed, as are the ways that fuzzy methods have been hybridized with these techniques in order to address their limitations; (2) a review of existing applications of fuzzy hybrid techniques in construction is provided in order to illustrate the capabilities of these techniques for solving a variety of construction problems and (3) potential improvements in each category of fuzzy hybrid technique in construction are provided, as areas for future research.
