Abstract

Purpose

This research study focuses on two critical questions. First, to what extent are US corporate directors now taking independent steps to protect stakeholders from future corporate débâcles, such as Enron and Tyco? Second, how have these débâcles personally impacted US corporate directors in other companies?

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 114 corporate business directors replied to a mail questionnaire.

Findings

Respondents reported that: the number of board‐initiated voluntary changes being considered is very modest; managements are not doing a good job communicating changes in internal control procedures to boards; the recent corporate débâcles caused only about 9 percent of director respondents to become uneasy about their directorships; greater “due diligence” is needed currently before accepting a board position (it is still an “honor” to be asked to join a board); some senior managers are not being realistic about the significant time commitment needed to be a director in the twenty‐first century.

Research limitations/implications

Despite the modest sample size, the very broad range of the firms’ sales data suggests that the sample may be somewhat representative of US business boards. Other studies have been based similar size samples.

Originality/value

Recent changes in corporate governance have been less rigorous than reported, despite many press reports concluding that corporate America is in a period of accelerating change. Outside directors seem to be unwilling to confront management on critical issues. Consequently, US directors need to be more proactive in making changes, or stakeholders can look forward to continuing débâcless like Enron, Tyco, and WorldCom.

Abstract

This paper argues for adopting the development of critical thinking as a key component of management education. It discusses various deficiencies in the traditional instructional process, noting that the most insidious problem is that many educators suffer from the misguided belief that they routinely emphasize critical thinking in their instructional tasks. The paper then presents a detailed prospectus, based on insights from practice, for a new orientation to the traditional instructional process. Comments are also offered on changing over to the suggested instructional orientation.

Abstract

Examines the incongruency between what business schools teach and what business organizations actually need. Suggests a need for reform. Explores the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation standards and suggests that this needs much clarification. States that emphasis should be less on the evaluation of “the institutional machinery of business schools” and more on management education′s “impact on society” as an indication of success. Concludes that more innovative action is needed within the management education process.

Abstract

An attempt is made to assess Australian and New Zealand M.B.A. programmes on the basis of as et of criteria which are commonly listed as important to the quality of an M.B.A. programme. Institutions are ranked in terms of standards and student quality, faculty quality, nature of programmes, marketing of programme, support services and courses offered. In terms of overall ranking, the top three institutions are, in order of ranking, Monash University Graduate School of Management and the Australian Graduate School of Management ranked jointly in first place, followed by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and ranked jointly in third place, the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Management and the University of Sydney Graduate School of Managementand Public Policy. Rankings depend heavily on criteria adopted and the weightings given to these criteria and rankings and should not be taken as being authoritative.

Believe it or not, Hamburger University really does exist in Elk Grove Village, Illinois and it is a very large operation. You guessed it — Hamburger University is the international training centre for McDonald's Corporation and since its establishment in the basement of a Chicago restaurant in 1961, it has graduated almost 20,000 McDonald's managers and franchisees.

Abstract

Despite the growing concerns about the impact of graduate management education, few studies have documented their effect on a student′s managerial abilities. An outcome assessment study was conducted on entering and graduating students in an MBA programme. A value‐added, crosssectional design was used with proper random sampling. Graduates of the MBA programme were found to have significantly greater levels of six skills, as compared to entering students. The results indicate that attending an MBA adds value on a number of abilities related to effective managerial performance. The lack of impact on interpersonal and leadership abilities was consistent with frequently cited criticisms of MBA programmes.

Abstract

Purpose

Although the previous literature considers independent directors as an internal mechanism for good corporate governance and higher financial disclosure quality, in contexts characterized by high ownership concentration, they may lack the mandate, the incentives and the ability to be an effective monitoring mechanism. Therefore, this study aims to focus on minority directors and investigate their impact on the earnings management activities for firms with concentrated ownership structures.

Design/methodology/approach

As the slate voting system is a peculiar feature of Italian corporate governance regulations, which gives minority shareholders the right to appoint at least one member of the board of directors (minority directors), this paper carries out a quantitative empirical analysis based on a sample of non-financial companies listed on the Italian Stock Exchange to test the role played by minority directors in increasing incentives towards higher financial reporting quality.

Findings

Robust to different model specifications, including the endogeneity test, empirical findings show a negative relationship between minority directors and earnings management, while no relationship holds between the latter and independent directors, suggesting that minority directors might promote greater directors’ accountability than independent directors in highly concentrated ownership structures.

Originality/value

Relying on the empirical findings, this paper offers new insights on a peculiar internal corporate governance mechanism related to one of the most debated issues among financial market practitioners and regulators, namely, the protection of minority shareholders. Moreover, this paper offers new insights for academics and practitioners on a peculiar governance mechanism that could soon be widely adopted.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a scientific framework for the selection of suitable substation technology in an electrical power distribution network.

Design/methodology/approach

The present paper focuses on adopting an integrated multi-criteria decision-making approach using the Delphi method, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The AHP is used to ascertain the criteria weights, and the TOPSIS is used for choosing the most fitting technology among choices of air-insulated substation, gas-insulated substation (GIS) and hybrid substation, to guarantee educated and supported choice.

Findings

The results reveal that the GIS is the most preferred technology by area experts, considering all the criteria and their relative preferences.

Practical implications

The current research has implications for public and private organizations responsible for the management of electricity in India, particularly the distribution system as the choice of substations is an essential component that has a strong impact on the smooth functioning and performance of the energy distribution in the country. The implementation of the chosen technology not only reduces economic losses but also contributes to the reduction of power outages, minimization of energy losses and improvement of the reliability, security, stability and quality of supply of the electrical networks.

Social implications

The study explores the impact of substation technology installation in terms of its economic and environmental challenges. It emphasizes the need for proper installation checks to avoid long-term environmental hazards. Further, it reports that the economic benefits should not come at the cost of ecological degradation.

Originality/value

The present study is the first to provide a decision support framework for the selection of substation technologies using the hybrid AHP-TOPSIS approach. It also provides a cost–benefit analysis with short-term and long-term horizons. It further pinpoints the environmental issues with the installation of substation technology.
