Discusses the 27 papers in ISEF 1999 Proceedings on the subject of electromagnetisms. States the groups of papers cover such subjects within the discipline as: induction machines; reluctance motors; PM motors; transformers and reactors; and special problems and applications. Debates all of these in great detail and itemizes each with greater in‐depth discussion of the various technical applications and areas. Concludes that the recommendations made should be adhered to.

Abstract
The complex geometrical structures, transient states and non‐linearity of the magnetic circuit of electromechanical converters are rather unfavorable for field calculation. A very small air gap width and different slot numbers of primary and secondary part of a converter cause big changes of the field gradients and thus demand a very fine discretization or even coupling different methods and formulations. Furthermore, these also cause scientists to look for the other more effective methods. In spite of these permanently growing possibilities of the software packages there still exists the need to look for more accurate methods for calculating the electromagnetic field in electromagnetic devices. In the paper, attention is focused on the transient states occuring in the power transformer. The solution of such a problem could allow engineers to estimate the power losses in tank walls and hot‐spots localization as well.

Looks at the coupling of fields in a device or a system as a prescribed effect. Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is the numerical verification of the linearization coefficient ap proposed by Turowski for the calculation of the electromagnetic field distribution and therefore the stray losses inside magnetically saturated solid steel conductors.
Design/methodology/approach
The numerical verification is performed on a case study consisting of a simple current conductor sheet parallel to a solid steel plate. Numerical computations are compared with analytical calculations with and without inclusion of the semi-empirical Turowski’s coefficient.
Findings
Results confirm a good agreement between numerical values for steel with non-linear permeability and analytical ones applying Turowski’s coefficient. This is particularly powerful in the case of analytical calculation of the magnetic surface impedance (SI) to increase precision when hybrid methods are used. The concept of SI enables the establishment of hybrid approaches for the calculation of stray losses, combining the numerical methods (finite difference method, finite element method (FEM), etc.) together with the analytical formulation, gaining from the advantages of both methods.
Originality/value
Previous numerical analysis was focused on the field dependence on time for several depths inside solid steel. The aim of this paper is to investigate the electromagnetic field distribution inside solid steel on a representative FEM model and verify how the linearization coefficient ap proposed by Turowski works.

Purpose
This paper aims to focus on the numerical modelling of 3D structure of surface micromachined (MEMS) accelerometers.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper focuses on the methods of mechanical design and analysis of electrostatic accelerometers (comb drive structure) and uses computer simulation procedure leading to final structure design, then to be defined as a basic structure for stress analysis.
Findings
The strategy in computer modeling of accelerometer MEMS is satisfactory in order to simulate the electromechanical characteristics of different accelerometer structures (IMEMS).
Originality/value
A novel complex strategy in computer modeling of accelerometer MEMS, based on solid modeling is proposed.

Abstract
Introduction: Climate change and the limiting nature of fossil natural resources are compelling elements that have driven the search for environmentally friendly alternatives to the traditional economy. In this context, as the main pillar of bioeconomy, biomass can contribute to energy sustainability, temper effects of climate change, and make the use of natural resources more efficiently. Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries have a relatively common economic history of agriculture playing a pivotal role in the former centralized economy. Purpose: This chapter analyzed the importance of biomass produced from residues of crops in CEE countries. This analysis is regarded as incentive to take a deeper look at biomass in CEE countries with acknowledged agricultural potential. CEE countries have been part of the former European socialist bloc, with agriculture being a core component of the centralized economy. Even though their economies have been undergoing a lengthy transition process to the market economy, this sector of activity still holds a significant share. Therefore, CEE countries provide a suitable ground for our analysis. Methodology: The authors selected characteristics of the agricultural sectors and development, and assess their relationship with biomass production in the CEE countries, using an Ordinary Least Squares method. Then, the authors investigate the environmental implications of crop biomass production in a similar framework. Findings: The results reveal that the agricultural biomass sector contributes to economic development, and it does not have negative implications for environmental indicators. These results show that biomass production is a sustainable target to be pursued.

Abstract
Today, the need for renewable energy is rising steadily. Various steps are being taken by nations to address the rising need. The developments occurring in proportion to the industrial structures and economic levels of the countries, these efforts, the political structure of the country, some established patterns from the past, and many other external factors affect the use of renewable energy and therefore sustainable development, which has been one of the most important agendas since the early 1990s. In this study, it is examined whether certain characteristics of the Scandinavian Welfare Model affect the background of this successful image of Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, which rank in the top three positions in both the Global Energy Innovation Index and the Sustainable Development Report. As a result, although the use of fossil fuels increases the ecological footprint in the Scandinavian countries, which are evaluated as in the rest of the world, continuing the principles of innovation, trust, equality, openness, and sustainability with determination, the Nordic approach has not departed from the welfare state principle compatible with its own codes, unlike the transformations experienced by other welfare regimes, and has become a distinctive factor.

Abstract
The target costing method works “backward” from traditional cost‐plus methods and begins with a targeted sales price for a product. This price is set based on what the customer is willing to pay. It considers not only the preferred current selling price but also the later life cycle pattern of prices. This technique has key managerial implications. This article considers these implications along with implementation guidelines. Examples of industries successfully using target costing are included. Ongoing controversies concerning where the techniques can best be used are discussed. Further considered are international differences in target costing as well as challenges of global outsourcing along the supply chain. The article ends with implementation challenges, significance for practice, and suggestions for future research.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to estimate the international competitiveness of China’s biomass energy products during 2007-2016 in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, the authors used the constant market share model and the revealed comparative advantage index to analyze the evolution trend of China’s biomass products’ international competitiveness during the past decade from 2007 to 2016 based on the market structure of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Findings
The results show that: China’s major biomass energy products have no comparative advantages in the world market, nevertheless, their international competitiveness is on the rise; China’s biomass energy products have been agglomerated to the regional markets where the market demand growth is fast in the Belt and Road countries; and the unreasonable structure is an important factor influencing the international competitiveness of China’s biomass exports.
Originality/value
The authors analyzed the international competitiveness of China’s biomass energy products based on the “Belt and Road Initiative” with all the trading items, in an effort to propose policy implications for enhancing the comparative advantages of China’s biomass products in the international market especially in the Belt and Road regions.

Abstract
Purpose
Visual stimulation affects the taste of food and beverages. This study aimed to understand how latte art affects coffee consumption by collecting participants' brainwave data and their taste responses.
Design/methodology/approach
Seventy subjects participated in a two-stage experiment. Electroencephalography (EEG) was employed to measure brainwave activity. With an interval of one week, each stage involved coffee consumption with and without latte art. The responses to the taste of the coffee were also collected for analysis.
Findings
Significant differences were found in the participants' alpha and beta brainwave bands. When drinking coffee with latte art, the participants' alpha bands were significantly lower, whereas the beta bands were higher. These findings were supported by Bayesian statistics. A significant increase was found in the participants' taste of sweetness and acidity with latte art, and Bayesian statistics confirmed the results for sweetness although the evidence on the increase in acidity was anecdotal. No difference was found in the taste of bitterness.
Originality/value
This study highlights the effect of latte art on coffee consumption. The authors analysed the empirical evidence from this two-stage experimental study in the form of the participants' brainwave data and their responses to taste. This study's original contribution is that it explored the crossmodal effects of latte art on consumers' taste of coffee from a neuroscientific perspective. The results of this study can provide empirical evidence on how to effectively use latte art in practical business environments.
