This article is intended to indicate some of the problems involved in obtaining latices which have practical utility. I shall be mainly concerned with copolymers of vinyl esters and the various acrylic monomers and also with latices which are applied as such—not merely polymerised in emulsion as a convenient method of obtaining the solid polymer in particulate form.

The Annual Paint Industries Show is the U.S.A. counterpart of both the Annual OCCA Exhibition and the OCCA Conference. This year's show was held in the impressive Civic Centre at Atlanta, Georgia. There were about 140 participating organisations in one main Exhibition Hall. October 28th‐31st.

New ground was broken this year when the Annual Paint Industries Show was held for the first time in Canada, the location being the Place Bonaventure in Montreal, a city in which the main language being French added an extra interest.

The £5m Activated Fullers' Earth plant recently completed by Laporte Industries Limited on its Widnes Site was officially opened on April 28 by Mr. Bryan Rigby. The new plant, the only one of its kind in the UK, has an annual capacity of 30–35,000 tons and about half of the output is exported.

Your editor can remember some twenty years ago—as a rather junior lab assistant— carrying out some of the peripheral work of a paint company's efforts to produce a gloss emulsion. The chief chemist, like so many others in the fifties, enthused that we were “nearly there” and that it was “just a question of the right pigment volume content”. BASF is to erect plant in Ludwigshafen for the production of 90,000 tons of acrylic acid a year from propylene. The capital investment costs are estimated at about DM 100 million, including those for the necessary infrastructure measures.

A newly developed polyvinyl acetate (PVA) emulsion latex for adhesive has been prepared by the semicontinuous process using a newly developed octyl aldehyde sodium bisulphite‐potassium persulphate redox pair initiation system. In this work the amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a protective colloid has been changed and it was found that only a little amount of (PVA) together with the newly developed adduct could cause a stable latex with excellent mechanical properties for bonding wood which favours this redox system in large industrial applictions. Also monodisperse latex particles with low polydispersity index can be prepared by using 1% PVA coupled with the newly developed redox system. Finally the developed latex has been incorporated and the corresponding shear strength were measured.
