Abstract

The Evidence Supported Medicine Union (EMU) was formed in the West Midlands to introduce and develop the ideas of evidence‐based medicine into general and hospital practice. To understand the educational needs of multi‐disciplinary members of acute trusts, a series of half‐day workshops were planned. All acute trusts accepted the invitation to send multi‐disciplinary teams — delegates attended in total in groups varying from one to nine. The major needs of acute trusts were: 1. critical appraisal skills, 2. multi‐disciplinary training workshops, 3. prioritizing areas for evidence‐based medicine, and 4. linking evidence‐based medicine into clinical audit.

Abstract

Monthly prescribing behaviour is assessed over a 3‐year period, 1 April 1992 to 31 March 1995. Total monthly number of items prescribed and overall net ingredient cost are analysed for 263 general practices, serving the 1 million residents of Birmingham, UK. Patients aged over 65 years play an important role in elevated prescribing activity. Practice composition varies considerably between training and non‐training practices, and between fundholding and non‐fundholding practices. Accounting for these differences, fundholders expend less and prescribe fewer items than their non‐fundholding counterparts. This is observed against a steady increase in prescribing activity over the study period. There are, however, marked downward shifts in both the number of items prescribed and overall monthly expenditure occurring with every new wave of fundholding. The magnitude of these changes raises doubts about the efficacy of the transition to fundholding and the impact of such large changes upon patient care.

Abstract

The paper reports the results of a study to determine the effect of the delays involved in obtaining interlibrary loans and photocopies on the work of users of a medical library. Few users are inconvenienced and the length of delay or value of the paper appears to have little bearing on what inconvenience is caused. The results are compared with a similar study carried out in industrial libraries and suggest that there is a greater chance of any delays causing inconvenience among medical workers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines employee attraction and retention issues and uses a case study of an Australian regional medium-sized enterprise to highlight the importance of organisational context factors such as place and scale in designing human resource (HR) solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The research presents a qualitative case study, with data drawn from strategic documents, interviews and focus groups, analysed thematically.

Findings

A carefully constructed set of HR strategies – including purposeful use of employer branding, synchronising of human resource management (HRM) formality and informality and capitalising on the regional context – are key to employee attraction and retention and in turn the growth and competitiveness of the case study organisation.

Originality/value

The HRM literature acknowledges the tendency to study larger corporations in metropolitan areas, at the expense of more nuanced research related to context. This research contributes to knowledge of attraction and retention through employer branding, with particular attention to scale and place, through study of a medium sized firm in a regional location. It highlights the importance of informality-formality dynamism.

Abstract

Roots of global Terrorism are in ‘failed’ states carved out of multiracial empires after World Wars I and II in name of ‘national self‐determination’. Both sides in the Cold War competed to exploit the process of disintegration with armed and covert interventions. In effect, they were colluding at the expense of the ‘liberated’ peoples. The ‘Vietnam Trauma’ prevented effective action against the resulting terrorist buildup and blowback until 9/11. As those vultures come home to roost, the war broadens to en vision overdue but coercive reforms to the postwar system of nation states, first in the Middle East. Mirages of Vietnam blur the vision; can the sole Superpower finish the job before fiscal and/or imperial overstretch implode it?
