States that business survival depends on the assured continuity of core business activities and supporting services. Business continuity (BC) plans are therefore developed to provide this assurance, but the best laid plans of mice and men can and often do go astray because the details of the plans are not effectively communicated to the people responsible for implementing them. There is no doubting the power of communication as a vital ingredient to success in all endeavours. This article draws on KPMG’s long involvement in BC consulting and sets out a template for a BC awareness, training and testing programme.

The Government's proposals for the establishment of a Greater London Council were contained in the White Paper on London Government, published last November. In the main, the Government support the recommendations of the Royal Commission, although many of these were controversial and aroused much opposition, particularly from the London County Council itself. The present two‐tier form of local government is to be replaced by a Greater London Borough as the primary unit responsible for its own area and an elected Greater London Council with larger and broader functions for a very much larger area. This will consist of the present area of the London County Council, Middlesex and parts of Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent and Surrey, coinciding with the approximate area of the metropolitan police district.

SO much controversy has raged around the subject of newsrooms in the past two years, that librarians are, as a rule, utterly tired of it, and the appearance of still another article upon the subject is not calculated to tone down the general spirit of vexation. It requires no little courage to appear in the arena in this year of Grace, openly championing those departments of our institutions which were originally intended to convey the news of the day in the broadest manner.

In this century of enormous growth in medical knowledge and skill, and the wide public interest in medical conditions, we have seen a spate of special clubs and societies whose main object is to help sufferers from some of the intractible diseases and addictions which still beset man—the Hemophilics, Alcoholics, Diabetics, Poliomyelitis victims, Multiple or Disseminated Sclerosis sufferers. The interest taken in these activities may sometimes be morbid, but in the main these societies have helped those afflicted and occasionally have contributed something to medical knowledge. For instance, from the association of hemophilics for their mutual help, it was learned that this condition has a seasonal incidence. In more recent years, other groups have been formed whose aim is prevention rather than help to those affected. The anti‐smoking clinics springing up in many areas are an example. They seek to check the rising incidence of lung cancer by helping people to give up smoking cigarettes. The latest in this field would seem to be the anti‐coronary clubs, established in the U.S.A., where the rising mortality among relatively young males is causing as much concern as in this country.
